Old Town San Diego

Good point! For Brockton Villa, the view and the wonderful historic beach cottage is worth the visit in itself! ;)

Old Town San Diego

Whaley is at the corner of Juan and San Diego Avenue. The cafe in the Whaley gardens is the Creole Cafe and it is said that it is the best Creole food in the region. I'd like to know others opinions of that as I'm not a Creole food fan so I cant vouch but it does get raves from the visitors, I work at the property is why I know this. El Agave for Mexican s great, but keep an eye on the prices, it can bust ones budget. We ow have two sushi houses, Sushi Harney and Sushi Tadokoro
2244 San Diego Ave. (Old Town). We also have a Thai place now and Bentowich which is Japanese. Back to Mexican food...I think people like to just automatically diss the tourist spots without having actually tried them. Sure there is plenty of cheese smothered stuff but some places have been there for decades and are serving up their abuelitas own recipes, so you might want to check the attitude at the door and discover what's actually there. Just my two cents.

Old Town/Balboa Park Recommendations

Old Town Mex! ...mediocre at best, except for a couple items. El Agave great but shouldn't someone have mentioned the exorbitant prices ? Although it is a great dining experience, visitors to our city should be given a little fair warning.. ...La Piñata on Juan St. is good for the cost conscious visitor and directly next door to them is Casa Guadalajara on the higher end (but not exorbitant by any means), which has more than a few good dishes. Of course there is also Peruvian, sushi, Italian, Creole, in Old Town to choose from.....and in Balboa Park- What about the new restaurant at the sculpture garden where Waters Cafe use to be? Has anyone tried that out yet? I think it is Italian?

Hodad's Downtown San Diego

East Village is a made up name. The area is and has been known by San Diegans who are interested in an authentic SD as the warehouse district... but the developers and new residents moving in didn't like the ring of that.... so they came up with this silly moniker East Village.. WTF is that supposed to mean? Whatever....I am surprised Hodad's is opening outside of a beach area tho.

Coronado Chow-ish and not too expensive?

Not gonna find anything in the realm of..oh there is an Asian fusion place on Orange Avenue..... But hey what about while in Coronado they just eat like the natives.
Boathouse, the Del, and Miguel’s are all great San Diego historic sites ...I mean if they are history professors. Wouldn’t they want something real rather then some inauthentic Asian experience?

Caterers in SD?

I work for a nonprofit and am always disappointed at what we can afford (they r fundraisers!) for what we get.

All i ask for is a decent quantity (i always plan for 20% above the guest count and so we should not be running out of food 30 minutes into an event right?, and while I don't expect the quality of product that I would serve at my own home(again cost prohibitive) but it should be decent and for service, should empty plates/glasses ever be left on a table more than a few minutes?

We have had to cater our own lately, and while we get rave reviews.(people asking for the caterers card) and the food is plentiful etc.. its such hard work and staff is so busy handling the food needs we cant mingle with the guest!, which we should be doing.

Any referrals? Ideas..help!

10 Best Things to Eat in San Diego

The Bread pudding and flan at Creole Cafe in Old Town in the Whaley House gardens. Both of these come from one of the owners grandmothers, which I guess is the reason they are included at a creole food restaurant. I am not a huge creole food person..but every time i am there people are raving about the food. Anyway, the flan is something else, unlike any I have had at Mexican restaurants,I suspect it is more like you would would get in a home in Mexico.
I have special ordered it as a whole ring for holiday events and everyone loses their minds over it.
