red velvet cake

Try Reeves Bakery at 13th and G NW (Near Metro Center). They are only open on weekdays until 6pm but have cupcakes that are quite good. Definitely better than Cakelove and probably better than what I had at Baked & Wired. Much cheaper too! I think they're 1.25 each. And they have a nice Red Velvet version.

My wife and I tried about 5 different cupcakes. The best were the ones without a filling squirted in and thankfully Red Velvet falls in this category.

Quality Delivery Pizza: The Impossible Dream?

I definitely agree that it's an impossible dream.

That said, we used to order from Alberto's but have had several significant delays actually getting the delivery as well as an inconsiderate response from them about such. And frankly, I don't think their pizza is that special.

The last couple of times we've ordered delivery pizza (which has been over the course of 6 months probably!) we've done so from Radius in Mount Pleasant. I assume they'd deliver to Kalorama. They have a tasty pie for these parts, but I think we make a better one at home if we have the forethought to make the dough.

Best of Wicker Park/Bucktown, Roscoe Village/W. Lake View, Printers Row?

Dear Chicago Chowhounds,

Having been much impressed by the chow in your fair city on our last visit, I'm hoping to refine even further our selections this time.

We'll be hanging out in these areas, mostly, and we're hoping to find good chow nearby (walking distance to el stops in these 'hoods preferred). We've got special love for ethnic of almost any kind and for places that don't break the bank, but we're willing to throw some cash out for a real winner. Not interested in steakhouses or Korean, but that's about all that's off the table, so to speak.

Interested in any food/bev genre that's a standout (i.e., restaurants, cafes, bars, coffee/tea places, dessert/bakeries, etc.).

Will be staying at the Hilton on Michigan for a conference Th-Sun, so anything that's a standout in the Loop would also be fab (although as I recall that's a tall order).

We already know about the fabulous food in Greektown, Chinatown, Pilsen and at the Maxwell St. market, but that's too far afield from where we'll be hitting the vintage clothing (the reason we'll be in the neighborhoods mentioned in the subject line!).

Thanks in advance, ChiChows!

capital region liquor for cheap

Your best bet is one of the Montgomery County DLCs. You can check their web site...
http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/Apps/DLC/Retail/spirits_specials.cfm

...for specials and they have many great deals. Overall I find that their prices, if you time things right with one of their sales, are better than other spots we've found. The one on Connecticut just outside of DC (below the Trader Joe's) is a friendly place. I think they are moving sometime soon but don't think it's happened yet. There are a few really knowledgeable folks there and their selection is good.

We go to Calvert Woodley as well, but I think we tend to get better deals at the DLC.

Hope this helps.

BBQ run - Greensboro, NC to South Carolina (near Savannah) - ANY Sweatman's info?

I'd also suggest going to Lexington. There are several spots worth your attention there. I was at Lexington Barbeque #1 a year or so ago and think it's pretty similar to Stameys in quality. I'm a huge Stamey's fan as I grew up a couple miles away from it (and will be eating there this weekend (!) along with Allen and Sons just north of Chapel Hill).

Best Boba (bubble) tea flavor in Eden Center?

I'd have to say avocado is boba shake probably my favorite. But there are so many other good ones including the durian and guanabana. It's not a bubble drink, but one of the most refreshing beverages out there is the sugarcane juice. It can be had at many places but my favorite is several doors down from Song Que. I forget the name of the deli but you can see the sugarcane mangler in the front window on the left side. If you haven't had it, they press the sugarcane along with a bit of orange and the result is delicious! All that said, the drink we get most often is the coffee with bubbles. Maybe because it's less heavy than the shakes? (And on a different matter, we totally love the dried longan drinks you can get at Pho 75.)

Great Thai in DC Proper?

Sorry about for not including specifics. We love the salmon with red curry. I don't recall every having salmon in thailand but it's the spirit of the dish that hits the mark. We order it pretty much every time we get their food. The curries in general are quite good. I like the soups (the tom kha gai, standard fare I know, but it is usually better than at other spots) and the yum talay is quite good as I recall. The noodle dishes don't seem to survive the trip to our home. Maybe they're better when eaten there?

Great Thai in DC Proper?

Thai Xing is often delicious. My wife and I order from them fairly often though we haven't in a couple months. It's really not a place you would go as a group (I'm not sure how many folks you're talking about here) though as it's pretty small. We've been once to pick up food and it's more like a kitchen that's overtaken a basement apartment. We usually order delivery from them. The food is delicious--some dishes are as good as we've had in Thailand, but delivery (and I've heard in-restaurant) service can be awfully slow. It took over 2 hours one night. Other times it can be quick. The chef has come to our house with the delivery a number of times, which probably explains the times when delivery is slow as ...oyster sauce? Overall I think the food is better than any other thai place in the District (including Rice which I want to like but find a little, I don't know, precious?).

Boba Tea

What flavors are you looking for? There are plenty of bubble tea spots in the greater DC area. The Eden Center is a good bet if you're in NoVa. The whole center is practically swimming in bubbles. There you'll find bubble drinks including thai tea, sweet coffee, tropical shakes (e.g., avocado, jackfruit, durian, mango, etc., etc.). In DC, Teaism has a nice milk tea with bubbles. And in Maryland, there's a TenRen Tea in a shopping center (825-G Rockville Pike) that has great bubble teas. They have a wide selection tea (duh!) based bubble drinks. Hope this helps with bubble needs.
