Mendoza: Top Wine & Gastronomy Destination

Word is out...there are new restaurants everyday in Mendoza .... and Wine Enthusiast just named Mendoza in the Top 10 wine destinations of the world. And their list is really good and spot on. Our favorite spot was Mun @ Casarena (www.chefmun.com). Asian fusion cuisine with exquisite wine pairings...asado (Argentine overcooked meat) is no longer a required visit element. Yea! I would take a pass at Zuccardi, but the goat cheese ravioli at Siete Cocinas (http://www.sietecocinas.com.ar) is a must!

Best Mendoza Restaurants 2013

My stay has been extended in Mendoza and I wanted to update my list of favorite restaurants. Good food is not easy to find in Mendoza, but there are a few bright spots:

- Brindillas: a little out of the way, small restaurant with excellent seasonal menus. Recently featured in NYT: http://travel.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/travel/restaurant-report-brindillas-in-vistalba-argentina.html
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g312781-d3244278-Reviews-Brindilla_s-Mendoza_Province_of_Mendoza_Cuyo.html

- Mun @ Casarena: excellent sushi & Asian cusine in the Barrel Room of Casarena Winery. Nice experience to meet other people and socialize with the Chef. Recently featured in Wine Enthusiast: http://www.winemag.com/Wine-Enthusiast-Magazine/March-2013/Fare-Play-An-Asian-Chef-in-Argentina/. They start lunch service in April. Sushi in the vineyard...Napa finally comes to Mendoza!

- Anna Bistro -- like the name says, a bistro, with good food -- very good wine list. Romantic setting. No frills, beautiful garden. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g312781-d798693-Reviews-Anna_Bistro-Mendoza_Province_of_Mendoza_Cuyo.html

New editions to my list:

Marie Antonieta: adorable, charming, centrally located -- love the pumpkin soufflé with goat cheese - also pork tenderloin with stuffed pesto. Chef came from Francis Mallman 1884...which, unfortunately, does not make my list...

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g312781-d2620332-Reviews-Maria_Antonieta-Mendoza_Province_of_Mendoza_Cuyo.html

Finca Ogawa: adorable farm in Valle de Uco with farm-fresh breakfast (quiche & organic coffee from Oregon) served in their garden. Go to pick your own rasberries (Dec - May), apples, tomatoes & herbs. A fun event for an entire day -- very kid friendly!

Best Mendoza Restaurants 2012

Anna Bistro is walkable - the other two require a taxi/remis -- many of the best restaurants in Mendoza require an investment in transportation....luckily, taxis here are relatively inexpensive compared to larger cities like Buenos Aires...if you want to walk only, i might also suggest:

Mendoza Restaurants near Cavas Wine Lodge?

I attended a wedding event at a new restaurant called Mun @ Casarena. Its about 5km from Cavas -- the five course meal was amazing with Asian courses that are almost impossible to find in Argentina. The wine pairings were well selected - hands down, my favorite was the Pinot Noir with the sushi course! The spicy tuna on crispy rice was extraordinary.

Congrats! My favorite chef in BsAs (he had a closed door restaurant here called Casa Mun) has opened a new restaurant in Mendoza at a winery -- Asian/California/Argentine fusion cuisine....here is his website: www.chefmun.com....his sushi is the best in Argentina!

Asian food, in general, is not good in Argentina. They are not allowing imports into the country. But, I did read a recent NYT article about Casa Mun:

Top Restaurants in Buenos Aires 2011

I am on extended stay in BsAs and it seems to me a list might need to be updated as the other threads are out of date. I have a few favorites I will list below -- please help me add to this list as, frankly, I find the food here rather boring.

Cafe San Juan - delicious rabbit stew

Spring Vegetarian - best lunch buffet for fresh veggies

Kansas - yes, I said it - I am addicted to their Caesar salad & American-style service

Casa Mun - best sushi (without creme cheese) + Asian fusion cuisine

La Brigada -- my favorite steak spot in BA

Best steak in Buenos Aires?

I agree with this recommendation 100% - my favorite used to be La Cabrera but the terrible service outweighs the food at this point. I may be a lush for sushi, but I love the lomo at La Brigada!

10 days in Buenos Aires

Casa Mun was my best meal in BA -- foreign born chefs are taking up the slack in the local food scene -- which I can only politely describe as boring. The night we went, there was a wonderful soba noodle soup, new style albacore sashimi with crispy onion, an assortment of maki sushi plus a delictable spicy tuna on crispy rice. And all without cream cheese. I later read on the website and that Chef Mun was trained by Iron Chefs Okuwa and Morimoto and it all fell into place....hands down the best sushi & Asian option available.

Great Sushi in Buenos Aires? Yes, I found it!

I travel to Argentina frequently on business and have tried most of the recommended restaurants for sushi: Yuki; Osaka; Japanese Gardens, Little Rose and always come away disappointed. However, there is a new glimmer of hope in an underground, closed door restaurant called Casa Mun. It seems that foreign born chefs are taking up the slack in the local food scene -- which I can only politely describe as boring. The night we went, there was a wonderful soba noodle soup, new style albacore sashimi with crispy onion, an assortment of maki sushi plus a delictable spicy tuna on crispy rice. And all without cream cheese. Anybody else been?? I later read on the website and that Chef Mun was trained by Iron Chefs Okuwa and Morimoto and it all fell into place....hands down the best sushi option available.

dineLA: Sushi Roku

It's Restaurant Week in LA and I decided to head out today for lunch at Sushi Roku in Santa Monica. I had not been to that location in several years and was pleased to find it thriving. In a city where restaurants can come and go in a matter of months, Sushi Roku is definitely a survivor. Their first location in West Hollywood opened in 1997 and the Santa Monica location followed two years later. Then it expanded to Pasadena, Las Vegas and Scottsdale. It seems the folks at Innovative Dining Group have cracked the code on creating a good concept and then expanding to multiple locations without sacrificing quality.

I ordered the three-course prefix lunch menu with the following:
~ Hanabi (spicy tuna on crispy rice cake)
~ Bento Box (tuna and salmon sashimi, mixed tempura, baked cod, renkon, sunomono salad, chicken kushiyaki).
~ Fresh Fruit & Sorbet

I can honestly say that everything was good and the tuna and salmon sashimi was exceptional. The Hanabi could do with less sugar and I would garnish with a slice of jalapeño. In the end, at just $22, this offer is too good to pass by. But hurry, the dates for Restaurant Week are Jan 24–29 and Jan 31–Feb 5.

NYE 2010 Spots for Sushi in Los Angeles

Well it's started again; the yearly madness that is my search for a good sushi spot for NYE. How can it be so hard to have a nice, low-key restaurant experience without paying a huge premium? As usual, I am in charge of making the reservation for my group and here are my criteria: (1) no more than $100 per person; (2) no restriction on the time of my reservation (for example, Katsuya Brentwood only has 6 pm and 8 pm seatings) and (3) no minimum spend per person or table. These criteria immediately knocked out the following options:

- Nobu (West Hollywood): $165 per person
- Katsuya (Brentwood, Hollywood, Glendale & LA Live): $120 per person
- Katana (West Hollywood): combination of specified seatings & $125 per person

These spots have offerings that fit the needs of my group:
- Sushi Roku (West Hollywood, Pasadena & Santa Monica): open seating and no minimums with regular menu. Note: the NYE email announcement from Innovative Dining suggests holiday specials but their public relations firm, Wagstaff Int'l., could not confirm details as of deadline this afternoon.
- Sashi Sushi + Sake Lounge (Manhattan Beach): open seating and no minimums with regular menu or special NYE menu for $65 per person.

At this point, I am still in fact gathering mode...and welcome your input if there are more options available.
