New to Austin: Need Wine Store Rec`s
I don't see a place on their site to sign up for email newsletter, can you tell me where it is?
Thank you!
Any Good Seafood in Austin?
Perla's on South Congress, just opened and is supposed to be New England style seafood.
Best Sangria in Austin/Central Texas?
San Jose Hotel, they include a wooden stick and a bowl to pick out the abundant fruit and the outdoor setting can not be beat. I also enjoy the sangria at Lambert's. La Condesa has one too, but I have not yet sampled it.
2 Nights at the Wynn
Don't want to leave the property. Which restaurants do you recommend for dinner. We like all cuisines fish, sushi fresh ingredients, but I think we'll forgo SW 'cause IMO a steakhouse is a steakhouse. Want atmosphere, flavor, and experience. Also, any not to be missed for breakfast and lunch. Many thanks for your help.
Made it to Austin! Need to revamp my list!
Go to La Condesa and Lamberts, 2nd Street District, they will not disappoint. Smart move on Enoteca, also one of my favorites. Have you made it to Whole Foods, it is the landmark store with five sit-down eateries, you can pull a bottle of wine from the shelf, they serve it to you and cook your meal fresh, it awesome!
Spiraling Toward Valentines Night
Agree with liking Blue Dahlia, it was actually on my short list for Valentine's Day option. Friends from NYC were in town and once again Mulberry did not disappoint, blogged about it here www.fabulousdrinksaustin.com
New Paggi House?
No so sure about the new Paggi House. Went this Friday for a happy hour drink. It was a beautiful night so I thought their deck would be perfect. I was let down. We were warmly greeted and shown outback, but to a white table-clothed table as the lounges were occupied. There was an older couple enjoying what looked like a fancy night out as he was in a bow-tie. The service seemed good until they tried to "auction-off" the couples' apps on our table. If I were to be having dinner there paying those prices I certainly would want my apps to be delivered to the right table and to the correct people sitting at the table. The music was that of a Miami night club and the scene to match, other than that older couple, who just looked out of place. It just did not have that cool, come-as-you-are Austin vibe I was hoping for. We quickly finished our drinks and headed somewhere more Austinish.
2008...The year that was...? Your favorite Austin food source this year. What was it? Who did the best job feeding you? What was your favorite Austin food trend this year? Your least favorite? Talk about Austin's food scene of 2008.
I am going to have to disagree with Kaya on two points. The hummus is one of the reason J Black's keeps me coming back. It is delicious and drizzled with fantastic olive oil! Also Taco Deli's avocado salad is fantastic!
Olivia
Has anyone been lately ? Since by blog on fabulousdrinksaustin.com I have not been back.
Trio at Four Seasons?
Girlgourmet-moosy's description did not give Trio nearly the credit it deserves. IMO it is the one of the best in town for dining and as far as a scene for New Eve's it doesn't get better than their lobby lounge, the place is jammin' nightly. The menu changes often according to what's in season giving it a fresh innovative feel but the staples stay, such as steaks and chops making it good for a group with different tastes. Have fun where ever you choose to go!
chef moving to austin
Jesi,
As a fellow North Easterner, I made my way to Austin via South Florida and Newport Beach, CA. The buzz is, Austin is turning into a mini-NY. Now, don't laugh too hard at that because having been here for 6 years and being a "yankee" it really is true. I am a freelance writer here in town and have a blog that I think you might enjoy, the link is below. Now, let me give you some advice, do not try to find a good bagel in town and if you are craving a pie once you move to town go to Homeslice on South Congress. We don't have any great mom&pop Italian places, but for really good Italian go to Vespio and their sister location next door, Enoteca for more casual. Let me know if I can be of further help.

Best French Fries in Austin
Has anyone tried the fries at TRIO? I saw them one t he menu but have not has them. My hubby is on a fry kick. His favs are at Enoteca. Did not care for the ones at olivia. We were at Fearings in Dallas this weekend and did not care for their's either. They were shoe string style like at Houstons. Happy Thanksgiving and I'll report back if I have any fabulous ones.

I like what you say. From my post above I think we are on the same wavelength.

Chef, welcome to Austin from an original North Easterner. A little advice, don't try to find a good bagel here ( sorry Austin bakeries), best pizza in town closest to NY style, IMO, is Home Slice followed by Whole Foods. Alright, with that being said, you are now an Austinite, or soon to become one, so open up your mind and embrace the really amazing offerings this town has and don't compare it to the NE. If you can do that, you'll be in good hands. Ok, if you enjoy good food as much as a good cocktail, check out my blog on where to find a great drink at; www.fabulousdrinksaustin.com Welcome to town and enjoy!
Austin Restaurant Week – Reviewed
That is so sad you had such a horrible experience at Starlite as it is near the top of my list of favorite restaurants. I had a fabulous dinner there this past summer that blew us away, it was incredible. We were just there yesterday for brunch and the food quality, drinks and service reminded me to throw it back into the rotation. I am hoping it was just a bad night and look forward to my next meal there.
Counter Cafe
If you can take it for what it is than Counter Cafe is fine. On that note, cheers to the owner for adding something to the 'hood. She uses local, organic food and that should be applauded. Okay, now my real feelings. Counter Cafe is missing the boat,or maybe just my boat. If I go to such a place,
I want the portions to be big and sloppy. I want a BLT with a thick slice of avocado on a big piece of crusty bread. I want some slow cooked oatmeal overflowing my cereal bowl. This sounds obscene, I know, but really for those prices I am just as inclined to walk over to Whole Foods and make up my own concoctions. I have brushed shoulders with Counter Cafe's chefs picking up ingredients at Whole Foods, which did make me happy, but what incentive does that leave to make a trip to the Cafe instead of my regular trip to Whole Foods?
Upscale Bar with NFL Sunday Ticket
Would like to join my better half and watch a game or two this season, but do not want to hang out at Little Woodrow's/Third Base type places. Anywhere to come to mind that would have the NFL Sunday ticket?
Baby Shower Cake
Where is the best place to get a cake for this occasion for about ten ppl? Thank you for your suggestions.
Where can I get good calamari and tuna tartare?
My fav tatare was at Whole Foods seafood counter, not sure if it is seasonal but have not seen it on the menu recently
Olivia (S. Lamar near Oltorf)
Does any one know if Ralph, the bartender from Bess, is now working at Olivia. I know he is friends with Jerry who left Vino Vino and he went to Olivia.
Help! Lunch tomorrow in Austin...
Hula Hut on Lake Austin, South Congress Cafe, really good food Enoteca also on South Congress. I think a 14 year old would like the vibe at both locations.
cheese plate
Who has the best cheese plate in Austin?? Going tomorrow. I have had Wink, Cru, Fino, Hotel San Jose and Blue Dahlia. The last two are my favorite. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Best Margaritas in Central Austin?
Welcome to Austin and try to"Keep Austin Weird!" Guero's Taco Bar on S Congress doesn't mess around. Original handshaken, tart and pure. Second best, down the street South Congress Cafe, owned by Trudy's has a frozen varietal that will sneak upon you. Opal Divines is boasting pure agave tequila, agave nector and lime, haven't tried it out yet. Ranch 616 makes a pretty solid one too. Have fun and stayed hydrated in between.
Bastille Day
Went as well. I thought they created a lovely party. It made for a rather special occasion place seem approachable and welcoming. We shared the Caprese sandwich. Other offerings included a cheese plate, mediterrean grilled veggies, and I think some pork items?? They had a variety of lovely Rose wines to choose from and had them displayed from sweet to dry so choosing was easy. The Caprese sandwich was one of the best we had and we had the opportunity to mingle with some other attendees and yes, I agree the music was lovely.
Best French Fries in Austin
I agree w/ The Tres Leches, my SO has been on a fry kick on swears my the ones at Enoteca
Sunday Brunch at TRIO
The quality is unsurpassed. As far as value, if you like to imbibe on mimosas, they are bottomless and made with good flow orange juice. They also include any type of coffee beverage in the price. Service may be the best in town.
Gas prices effect dining expectations
Consider yourself lucky to be Central. Although not "adventurous," Whole Foods' sit down eateries are the best value in town. No, tipping or mark ups on wine. Grab a bottle of wine off the shelf and enjoy a beautiful meal that costs less than $15.
