FOODIE ON A DIET :( ... Need Healthy Restaurants
Try Cafe Verona at 201 S. La Brea & get the minestrone & the Ocean Salad. The latter is dressed but lightly.
Recs for good & somewhat quiet dinner in Sunset Strip vicinity?
This sounds ideal. Thanks!
Recs for good & somewhat quiet dinner in Sunset Strip vicinity?
I have to do an interview over dinner, and the person is staying at the Sunset Marquis. I never eat in that area & could use some advice in case he doesn't want to go far. Here are the criteria:
1. Not a sushi restaurant. Other cuisines OK.
2. Dinner for $50 per person or less (w/o booze).
3. Not so terribly trendy that we'll be hustled out in 45 minutes flat. I'll probably need at least an hour & can keep ordering food!
4. Not full of deafening ambient noise. I have to be able to use my tape recorder.
Thanks in advance!
Good food and/or coffee with WIFI in Los Angeles
You might try Tiago at Hollywood Blvd & LaBrea. They're not open late -- I think they close by 7 or 8 pm -- but they have a nice patio.
Trastevere-hollywood
At that location you might also consider Chado, which offers a light menu in addition to an afternoon tea. I haven't been myself, but their other tearooms seems to be a hit with Hounds. On the casual side, and on the same side of the property, is Komida (Asian fusion tacos), which is also popular.
A Change from the ordinary...different salad ideas?
For starters, yOu might try roasting some of the veggies. I love to roast a batch of brussels sprouts or a broccoli/cauliflower mix with some chunks of red pepper and onion in the oven (usually a half hour at 400-425 does the trick, and i mix them well with a little olive oil & salt first), and then I have 3-4 days of salad ingredients on hand. Just toss some with whatever lettuce you have on hand. Also, try mixing in a few fresh herbs. Parsley and dill are my favorites; they add a lot of flavor. Finally, i might sprinkle in a little parmesan cheese & dress the whole thing with a little homemade mustard vinaigrette.
I have never, ever, had a bad meal at ____________and I have eaten there over a dozen times!
Marouch, Versailles
Sunday night dinner between Griffith Park and Hollywood?
Second Marouch -- you really can't go wrong there. But again, it's in a dumpy strip mall, like so many good restaurants are here!
your dream birthday cake
My grandmother's specialty was a 3-layer German chocolate cake that featured German chocolate icing as well, not the traditional nutty topping. She made me & my siblings one of these for our birthdays for many years. I believe she got the recipe off the Baker's German Chocolate box. Cake was amazingly light and fragile & would tear easily during the frosting stage. I have the recipe but have just been afraid to attempt it, hers was so great!
Foods you dread making because they’re time-consuming
Spanokopita (from ATK's Best International Recipe). Dear god, I love to eat it, but oy!!
Hollywood Pies -- what happened..???
Recently discovered their new location (on Robertson, just north of Pico) is their only location, not a second one.
Yamashiro Farmers Market
Hollywood Patch reports that Yamashiro's Thursday night market is starting up tomorrow (April 5). I've never been & am curious to hear others' impressions. The vendor list is small, but I guess you can't beat the view!

Hollywood Pies - FINALLY some decent Chicago Pizza in LA
They're opening a west side location ( on robertson) april 13. Takeout & delivery only. Also, their current specials include a free small pizza with any large one ordered for delivery thursdays.
Hollywood Pies -- what happened..???
They're reporting via Twitter that they're opening a 2nd location on the west side april 13. Will still be delivery & takeout only.
Breakfast that knocks your socks off
French toast made with challah bread, buttermilk & cinnamon.
Park City, Utah
Even the higher-end restaurants in Park City aren't what you'd call dressy. It's a very outdoorsy population for the most part. Jeans & sweaters would get you in just about anywhere.
LBI area Easter brunch, dinner, lunch ??? Any ideas, always at a loss for dining in this area!
Will do. I'm a big fan of tres leches & never dreamed I might find it in southern Ocean County!

I have to try this place!
Tea room anyone?
I haven't heard of the Tick Tocks, but Rose Tree Cottage in Pasadena might meet your requirements. You'll need to make a reservation.

Uncle Wills is actually more convenient for me to get to, but I've enjoyed better service, better prices & the much larger breakfast menu at Greenhouse.

i've had good basic breakfasts at Greenhouse Cafe in Ship Bottom.
Hollywood Chow-ography!
As far as I know, Hollywood Pies hasn't moved again. They continue to deliver in the Hollywood/WeHo area, though.
Hollywood Chow-ography!
In terms of restaurants close by, you're a stone's throw from Pink Pepper, which is decent Thai, and you're a short distance from Cafe Verona (2nd & La Brea), which has great salads, frittatas, pastas & the like. You're also within the delivery zone for Hollywood Pies (www.hollywoodpies.com), which has great Chicago-style deep-dish pizza (made to order, so you have to allow about 2hrs for delivery). You can get some real happy-hour food bargains at Bossa Nova on Sunset; I believe it's basically 2 apps for the price of one. And I haven't been there in a long time, but Cheebo on Sunset has a big menu that focuses on organic ingredients.
