Any reports on Cafe Corona or Yannolfo's in Marblehead?

Yannolfo's took over Pellino's space, Cafe Corona is in the Smith St. location most recently occupied by Sablone's. Has anybody tried them?

Thanks,

Sunday dinner with kids in Marblehead

Thanks. I have been to 5CK once, enjoyed it, and recommend it. However, it's not my idea of a kid-friendly place in general, much as I would love to take their parents there. Also, the noise level is horrendous, especially for the grandparental generation, including me. Since I have not seen this part of the family in about 5 years, I'd like to be able to have a conversation.

Sunday dinner with kids in Marblehead

Where to take guests from abroad with 3 kids: 13, 11, and 8 for dinner in or near Marblehead on Sunday night? I like Hooked, but want us to be served. Three Cods is okay, too, but I'd prefer a more attractive location. What about the Landing? Haven't been in years. I have done well at Hawthorne by the Sea, but also hear lots of complaints. TIA for your help.

How do you choose what to keep when downsizing your cookbook collection?

Thanks to everyone for all the sane and sage practical advice and the commiseration. I enjoyed and value the varying points of view. After an absence of some months, it was fun to meet some new (to me) voices. To perform the suggested assessments may take me a lot of time, but the journey of a thousand miles,etc....

Many thanks again!

How do you choose what to keep when downsizing your cookbook collection?

After 50 years in the kitchen, it's time to cull. I'm not concerned about what to do with the ones I decide to part with, as I've got a lot of options. But what criteria do you use for keeping vs donating/selling?

TIA!

Spectacular Salad needed!

Another vote for this one. A friend served it with orzo instead of rice, and I have made it that way several times. Always a great success.

Sablone's new location

Well, there's a review in today's Marblehead Reporter. The reviewer, a fan of the old Sablone's, missed the clowns, and was happy to report that the management assured her their arrival was imminent....

Four of us had dinner there about ten days ago; two had pasta, two had veal. I ordered the fusilli with rabe and sun-dried tomatoes, minus the sausage. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and had leftovers for lunch. It was fresh pasta, a rare treat for me. The others were happy, too.

The welcome was warm, and we were seated almost immediately, without reservations, on a Monday night. It was about 2/3 full when we arrived at seven, and somewhat noisy, less so as early diners left. There's a small, attractive waiting area in front, as well as the bar. And for those who dread the parking situation in Marblehead: plenty of on-street space here. I wish them well!

Salem for Halloween

Point of clarification: at The Hawthorne, if you want the New England fireplace, head for the Tavern (not Nathaniel's, the white tablecloth dining room). The NYTimes said recently that Salem during October is like Times Square on New Year's Eve. Be prepared; enjoy. Good luck.

Sablone's new location

There is now a sign in Sablone's window that says they will open on October 15. The menu is posted there, too, but I haven't had a chance to read it.

Pareve English Muffins?

Matthew's Multigrain English Muffins are pareve. Don't know about their other varieties. I have been eating them for breakfast every day, toasting them very carefully so that they become crisp enough, but not burned.

The heckscher is from VH of the Capital Cities (Albany). The symbol is a mogen david with a design inside that I can't decipher.

The sign says "of East Boston." Don't know when they are opening, Will report back when they do. They are advertising for staff. .

Sablone's new location

The restaurant is preparing to open on Smith St. in Marblehead. Previous tenants in this spot have not lasted long. The space is long, narrow, and dark, with a bar taking up much of the room. For Marblehead, the parking situation in the dinner hour is not bad, but there's a lot of competition for the Italian food dealer in the area. Here's hoping they do well..

Cafe Barada

Le Bistro in Marblehead has the standard basic items. The original owner, a Lebanese man, sold it a couple of years ago to locals, but I think the kitchen hasn't changed. I like the kofta kebab, which is nicely seasoned, and my husband is a felafel freak. I think their soups are homemade and good. It's been a while since we tried the mezze.

Ok..I have to get this out in 2006..I HATE TRADER JOES

Good summing up. Not much mention in the thread of their cookies. The florentine-like almond or macadamia wafers sandwiched with milk or dark chocolate are a good impulse option at the end or or in the middle of a perfectly horrible, terrible, really bad day.

How to take the "sweetness" out of chili

If you used sauteed onions, they add sweetness, especially if they become browned and caramelized. So, if the recipe calls for them, you could reduce the amount and/or be careful not to let them brown. Good luck.

Unfortunate foreign food names or brands

There's a Canadian cereal I've seen here at Stop and Shop called Otio-s. Huh? I'm lazy enough already.

The Lingering Odor of Latkes Frying

You could fill a medium pot of water about 2/3 full and boil it with cinnamon (and maybe a bit of clove) for a while. It won't get rid of the smell, but it might mask it. and pray for warmer weather!

Good luck.

looking for an essay that talks about being passionate about food

Laurie Colwin's Home Cooking, and More Home Cooking. Also, Elizabeth David's An Omelette and A Glass of Wine. Contrasting personalities and styles, both very worthwhile. Colwin was a New Yorker and about a generation younger than David, very much a Brit, who came to maturity during WWII.

Lunch Help for Lynn or Swampscott?

The Tides rolls on. Was there for lunch a couple of weekends ago, and drove by sightseeing this weekend. Both times, colorful kites were flying on the beach. I had a quesadilla, which I enjoyed; it may have been smallish, but was ample for me. My friend and I shared a gooey and delicious dessert. Service was friendly and thoughtful, but the ambience was bare bones.

Drinkable?

The closet was in our basement which is always cool, so that was in our favor. We opened the Stone Pine and enjoyed it, after it breathed a bit. Other than that, I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment on it's quality or characteristics. Thanks to all for the information. I'll post again when we open the Phelps.
