Roasted Garlic and Smoky Greens Soup

Agree with other commenters that this soup needs a focus. The poached egg might work, but members of my family all said "meat, this needs meat." Since we'd made a double recipe, and therefore had enough for the next night, we added some cooked tenderloin. Sure enough, everyone was much happier. (Vegetarians using veggie broth might try adding especially flavorful mushrooms or possibly substituting yam for the potato.) Anyway, we're learning to take Chow recipes with, ahem, a grain of salt as many seem to only be partway to truly satisfying.

Vanilla-Buttermilk Pastry Cream

Very tasty. For step 2, though, 4 minutes of whisking did not work. More standard custard recipe instructions, however, do work: "Whisk in dry ingredients and place the pan over medium to medium-high heat. Cook, whisking constantly, until mixture begins to thicken and turn bubbly (think 5 - 10 minutes...). Turn down the heat to low and continue to stir until the mixture thickens more substantially (like a loose pudding)." Then continue following at step 3.

Help! Need to find best South Bay sushi restaurant!

After the graduation ceremony, we headed off to Akane. Thanks so much for telling us about this restaurant - it was perfect! The atmosphere is upscale casual, and very comfortable. Serving staff were friendly and helpful. The sushi was wonderful - this evening the salmon and salmon eggs deserved an especial call-out for being fresh and tasty. We also appreciate references to other places, and are looking forward to visiting them, as well.

Help! Need to find best South Bay sushi restaurant!

Thanks a lot! Right now we're thinking of going either to Fuki Sushii in Palo Alto or Akane. Akane doesn't seem to have a website - Do they take reservations, or are they less formal than that? Also, on a Saturday night around 7PM how crowded would they be? How does the sushi compare with Fuki Shushi's? All comments are welcome!

Everyone likes nigiri sushi and maki sushi. Not much for sashimi (which is not sushi, btw). Also, from Willow in Menlo Park, Milpitas and Fremont are in range, so are Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Redwood City (and, obviously, Menlo Park). San Mateo is a bit too far north.

Help! Need to find best South Bay sushi restaurant!

For high school graduation dinner, my son wants to go to a sushi restaurant. This will be on a Saturday evening after 6:30PM and we'll be driving from Menlo Park. The four of us (2 adults, 2 teens) hope to go to (reserve a spot?) a great restaurant within a 1/2 hour drive. Though everyone in our family likes sushi, we don't normally visit sushi restaurants. All suggestions, tips are welcome!

Almost Summer Pudding

Well, I wrote a long message that got wiped out when I tried to enter my user information and had to take a detour to get a new password. So this will be short: The brioche (purchased at Whole Foods) worked great for us. Grownups and kids liked the pudding and ate it all. I believe none of the previous posters made this dish or they would have noticed that a 1 quart dish is TOO SMALL. Folks, for this recipe, you need a 2 (two) quart bowl. Also, stacking cans on top of the pudding won't work unless you are using an industrial sized can of something nice and heavy. We used an unopened 1/2 gallon of juice, on its side, topped by a tub of yogurt. The yogurt tub didn't slide off because the entire combo - pudding/quart-juice-on-side/tub - was wedged in place between the top shelf and the inside ceiling of the fridge.

Cavolo Nero (Black Kale)

"Black" kale is also called "dino" kale and "Tuscan" kale, and can be found at more places than you might expect, such as Safeway. Lacinato kale is the formal name.

Five-Spice Pork Stir-Fry with Sweet Potatoes and Snap Peas

Was looking for something to cook that used snap peas, saw this, realized I had the ingredients and gave it a whirl. Sorry, while the result was Ok (everyone ate it), the family voted thumbs down for having it again. Really, it seemed to be a sort of European-Chinese mash-up that didn't work. But the sweet potato/pork/snap peas/spinach/garlic part might be a good place to start for a new and different recipe.

The Holy Grail: Does anyone make a good fat-free salad dressing?

Try this:

Mix well together, to taste:
several Tablespoons high quality vinegar, such as white balsamic or raspberry vinegar
1 - 2 Tablespoons high quality fruit preserves (extra points for sugar-free)
1/2 - 1 teaspoon high quality Dijon mustard
Pour over salad greens or coleslaw vegetables

Back story:
When I was looking around for the exact same thing, I found the following recipe, which my family liked pretty well: www.fatfreevegan.com/dressings/raspbe.... This was *after* we'd tried several alternatives, and after we'd all agreed that the store bought fat-free stuff was yukky beyond belief. But this recipe takes a while to put together and, one night after a long work day when I was too tired to go to the effort, it occurred to me that the frozen concentrate and fruit were simply ways to add fruity sweetness to the recipe. I happened to be staring at a jar of blackberry preserves. The result was so well liked - even more than the original recipe - that we've never bought store dressing since. The results can be varied by type of preserves and vinegar. Also, I've sometimes added fresh herbs.
