Mexico One Plate at a Time

I like it when Jacques chastises Claudine on-camera; it's like she's 12 years old again getting a spanking over Dad's bended knee -- and enjoying it.

Giada at home

I would force my children (ages 4 and 2) to eat anything Giada cooked just so I could watch her move around the kitchen.

Applebee's - Worst National Chain Ever?

I love Applebees; the prices are reasonable, the staff helpful, the food vivacious and flavorful, the portions plentiful, and the ambience delightful.

Oh who am I kidding -- I hate Applebees so much, I've never eaten there.

Now TGI Fridays...what does the "TGI" stand for? Treatment for Gastrointestinal Illness? I "ate" at a TGIF in Las Vegas (at the Gold Coast Casino and Gambling Hall) and that "food" was the worst excrement I've ever put in my otherwise pristine mouth.

At least at Olive Garden, you're family, so you can openly hate everyone.

fosters freeze, cali

Born and raised in Los Angeles. Never cared what people wanna call the state, never found it embarassing if someone says "we're going to Frisco". Doesn't matter to me, and I find it amusing, if not juvenile, that people may judge someone's "cool" factor based on the usage of these all-too-common, and ultimately meaningless, phrases.

fosters freeze, cali

The Foster's Freeze in Van Nuys -- CALI -- is great for shakes and greasy burgers.

As for calling California "Cali" or San Francisco "'Frisco", it's ok to use those terms; only 9th grade girls actually care about such things.

Is anyone else appalled by "Worst Cooks in America?"

The premise -- for me -- was flawed from the beginning. What's to stop a bonafide chef from acting deliberately clueless and cooking horrible dishes all in the name of competition?

I can't watch the show without thinking some of these "horrible cooks" are, in actuality, quite adept and are only faking it for the benefit of entertainment.

Oh well, as the saying goes, television is a medium because anything well done is rare.

Damiano's Mr. Pizza - Late night love

Damiano's Mr. Pizza is on my list of amazing LA pizzerias. Sue me, I love their pies, and have since the late '80s. 1980s, that is.

Super Chefs _ Iron Chef America [spoilers]

It looked to me like Emeril cut himself in the very first shot of him in the kitchen. He was chopping an onion and suddenly raised his left arm as if in pain.

From that point on, he rarely used his left hand, and it was often covered in a towel when on-camera. Watch, you'll see what I mean.

They *did* show a couple of shots of his naked left hand later in the episode, and it didn't appear to be bleeding, so perhaps I'm seeing things.

Again.

By the end of the cooking segment, his apron appeared to be sort of a bloody mess.

It's been baffling me and might explain Emeril's seeming lack of confidence during the entire episode.

Regardless, I enjoyed the show, as I do all ICA's.

In guess I missed the shows where they narrowed down the 10 finalists, huh?

You watch -- the heavyset chef is going to be in the finals. The true finals.

Next Iron Chef Episode 1 10/4 [And subsequent episodes] (spoilers)

FN does it again. I'm watching the first episode of the new "Next Iron Chef" last night, and, sure enough, there's a commercial showing the heavy-set chef (sorry, his name escpaes me) and it says "Next Iron Chef Finalist" in small print.

This is the 2nd time I've watched FN competition shows and their commercials give away the ending (or at least give an indication).

Why do I even bother? Oh yeah, because I love Iron Chef.

First date help! "Deep" valley Encino/Reseda/Northridge? Tues. Sept. 15th.

Thanks for the update -- wow, Versailles for a first date! I always -- ALWAYS -- have to order the roast chicken there and that dish is, for lack of a better word, garlicky. You are a brave dater!

Glad the second date worked out, I've never been to Henry's Hat, gotta check it out some time.

As for the Sherman Room -- how 'bout them dinner salads? ;)

Leda's cupcakes -- going... going... Oct 18th

I wish Leda's all the best but count me as one not impressed with her wares; are scones *supposed* to have chunks of baking powder intact? Shudder.

These days I get me cupcake fix at Hansen's on Fairfax -- $.50 for the bite-size and $1,00 for the monsters. Perfect!

Cold Stone Creamery -- bleh

(re-posted from an earlier thread)

I'm in Sherman Oaks, California, and there's a CSC right around the corner. Of course, I had to try it; it gets awful hot 'round these parts come summer.

The main thing that bothered me was the total inefficiency with regard to the "mix-on-a-slab" preparation. Sorry, but I don't have anywhere from five to ten minutes to wait for this laborious procedure to finish. Considering there were two customers ahead of me, it took a total of fifteen minutes from walking in the door with my cash-money to walking out the door with the product.

Meanwhile, was I supposed to stand there, transfixed, watching some bezitted teenage summer employee play with my food the way a toddler might play with her own bodily waste? I don't think so.

The product was, in a word, abysmal. As otters have mentioned above, the "ice cream" is too sweet, too airy, and too lard-like to pass for the real thing. I was left with a curiously oily coating within the confines of my otherwise pristine mouth -- an annoying sensation that lingered for hours, no less.

Aside from the Dow Chemical-like consistency of the "ice cream", the unrelenting sweetness killed it for me. This thing was sweet with a capital "F". Beyond enjoyable, frankly.

Although I chose to leave a small tip in the counter-top jar, I was not vocally serenaded -- something for which I am forever grateful.

No, thanks, I'd rather gorge myself to the point of paralysis on Haagen-Daaz bars or Ben and Jerry's.

Top 10 Fave French Fries in L.A.

In the "soggy-with-chicken-fat" catagory, I give you Versailles. Man, those fries drenched in that citrus marinade just destroy me.

Oddly, I have a soft spot for Oki Dog's Bag O' Fries as well.

Best fries in town are the twice-cooked-in-lard I make myself...

Weiner Factory Sherman Oaks -- Intel?

I see the old Weiner Factory building in Sherman Oaks is being refurbished -- do any Valley CHer's know what's in store for the place? Certainly not a Pinkberry's as was originally planned....talk about a trend turnaround....

Just curious, thanks.

Why does coffee upset my stomach so much?

My acid reflux disease -- as well as my restless leg syndrome -- magically disappeared within a few days of quitting the old 'bean. I've moved on to green herbal teas and iced lemon water to help with my medical conditions and have never looked back (it's been almost a week now).

Now if only I could find a lasting cure for my COPD and high blood pressure.

Death of a cookbook

No no no -- my cookbooks (a library, cataloged by cuisine/culture, of close to 500 books) are not dead. The crappy, incomplete, FAILURE receipes found online are usually horror stories waiting to unfold. I scold you.

I keep a laptop permanently in the sink, incidentally.

Anthony Bourdain vs Alice Waters

I bet Alice would take Tony down in a New York minute if it came to blows between them. Tony seems a bit of a blowhard, the kind of tough-talking kid who instantly retreats to mama's loving arms at the first indication of provocation. Alice -- all wirey and sinewey from her fresh vegetables and open-fire-pit kitchen -- would whup the boy, but good.

I'd pay Travel Network to see this....anything but Andrew Zimmern. Please.

TGI Fridays

I recently had the misfortune of dining at the TGIF's at the Gold Coast Casino in lovely Las Vegas, Nevada. We had the sliders and some Buffalo wings. Awful -- food was cold, buns stale, wings tough and chewy.

Oh well, when in Vegas, one should gamble I suppose.

There was no -- I repeat NO -- salad bar; I think the person who said they have a salad bar is being untruthful, or perhaps they're deluded and/or confused.

Last night, I'm watching CHOPPED -- the first of the "returning champions" competition -- and, lo and behold, before the episode is even over, FN airs a CHOPPED commercial with one of tonight's contestants saying, "I've won two championships already, blah blah blah."

Thanks, FN, for being the best of the best! You saved me 10 minutes of watching your endless stream of mediocre shows and constant barrage of commercials.

Very Specific (Mexican)

Someone mentioned Barragan's in Burbank...

I'm not picky when it comes to Mexican-American food; I love the stuff. So when a friend recommended Barragan's as the "quintessential" AMEX experience, I figured I'd give it a shot.

Horrible. Horrible. Horrible.

"Sopa" was a bowl of chicken-flavored water and a few grocery-store carrots. Chips were stale (big no-no). Combo plate was disgusting and I can't even pinpoint why, exactly. It just wasn't any good.

For that dark burgandy-booth "plate is hot" vibe, try Don Cuco's (Burbank), Granada (Burbank), Casa Vega (Sherman Oaks), El Charro (Montrose), Ernie's (No. Hollywood), Presidente (Mission Hills), or Don Antonio's (West LA).

Note that none of these places have really incredible food, but it's what you want.
