ISO Strawberry cake or cupcakes in WLA

and I particularly want the cake itself to be strawberry - like pink and moist - and maybe with either a cream cheese or vanilla buttercream frosting. I have been to a few places lately where they claim it is strawberry cake, but it is really just white cake with a strawberry flavor - blech! I need it for a baby shower for next weekend. Thanks!

Kanpai Sushi in Playa del Rey

I love Kanpai! I am still a fairly new sushi eater...I started out at Kabuki because it is next to where I work - but it has never been that great. Then I ate at Kanpai and WOW!!! I became a sushi lover! Everything was so fresh and tasted so different than anything I've ever had at Kabuki. I only eat Kabuki now in a pinch.

I have also recently tried Kaizuka in Culver City and they were pretty good...except the rice in the maki kept falling apart, which made a mess in my soy sauce/wasabi combo (which it sounds like is only for sushi newbies like me?) :)

3-hour layover at LAX

Paco's Tacos is on Manchester, just right off Sepulveda.

There is also this amazing little sushi place down on Lincoln & Manchester called Kanpai. I would definately suggest this over Kabuki.

New restaurants in Culver City?

Yes...I believe the one I have seen them building out is the old Prado Signs place. The space next to it, with a brick front, is rather large but it looks like it is still for lease.

I don't know yet about San Gennaro - I walked by it last weekend and it looked like they were working on it.

Cobbler Lady (review+pics)

Not upside down. I think it is kind of like just dropping biscuit dough or cake batter or something on top of the peach mixture and then it kind of bubbles up all around. It was just a thicker, more cakey crust than the thin pie-type crust. I hope this makes sense??? :)

I can never find the good peach cobbler like my grandma used to make (in Oklahoma where they also grow good peaches). She made it with more of a cake top than a pie crust-type topping. Sadly no one has her recipe - she never wrote it down. She also made the best peach preserves. Ahh...the memories!

I wish I could find some good Southern peach cobbler in LA, too. :)

I also heard that some famous celebrity organic caterer was opening a restaurant in CC, but I don't know where.

The space next to the BBQ place looks like it is split into two places and the one they are working on looks kind of small. The other one, which has had plywood boarded up on it for a while looks pretty big - but it does't look like much is happening yet.

Has anyone tried Meltdown yet? I'm dying to, but their hours are inconvenient for me.

Thanks Dommy! I didn't really like Bluebird that much though. I had a red velvet one time and the food coloring wasn't mixed in well, it had splotches of brown (chocolate) with the red - it didn't look too appetizing. I don't really care for their icing, either. They used to be open later at night and I liked to get a burger there every once in awhile, but I noticed lately that they are only open for lunch and now closed on Saturday's too. They didn't have consistency in their food - maybe that's why???

Ugo, really? That's no fun. I didn't really care for them. I'll have to try it out, though. All of this is walking distance to me.

You're right, Howdy's is there between the theatre and Coldstone - I guess the space I'm talking about is a little further down by the BBQ place - it looks like 2 spaces there and one of them is getting worked on.

I keep hoping Culver City gets a cupcake place (I know not original - but I like cupcakes!). Also, Culver City is getting a lot of nice restaurants, but there really is not enough to actually "do" down there - like hang out - just the movies & Starbucks. I guess there is hanging out at the bar in the hotel or Bottlerock, but if you are really not into drinking...

Does anyone know what is opening in Downtown Culver City, where the old Entenmann's Bakery used to be, I think it is at like Washington & Cardiff. Also, what is going in next to the movie theater and Coldstone?
