Need Hamburger Recommendation After Long Road Trip: Anywhere from Brownsville to Houston

Hi all,

In June, we will be driving from Southeast Mexico all along the Gulf coast, before crossing the border in Brownsville. After that, we will be pushing on to Houston, but the first thing I would like to do on arriving back in the US is to get a really, really great burger. Where is the first place I should go?

Thanks for your suggestions!

Embarrassing Frozen Foods You Always Keep on Hand?

We are living outside the country right now, so it has been a couple of (very sad) years since we last tasted Macaroni and Beef. I am in a hotel room in the States right now, and will go buy a box to try out.

Otherwise, no, I have been trying to develop a recipe for our website for a while now, and haven't come up with any reliable facsimile. Probably because we don't have any xanthan gum on hand. :)

Embarrassing Frozen Foods You Always Keep on Hand?

I always, always maintain at least one box of Stouffer's Macaroni and Beef in my freezer at all times, in preparation for some kind of "emergency" scenario that never seems to come. In fact, when I get down to one box, I never eat it, because then I won't have any more. There is also almost always a freezerburned Tina's "Red Hot Beef" burrito rolling around in there somewhere.

How about you? What embarrassing frozen delicacies won't you admit to keeping on hand?

Foods you eat strangely

Oh goodness, I have a ton of these, and always thought I was alone in my weird obsessiveness until reading through this thread.

I like to bite the caramel off of a Twix bar...if you get it right, there is no caramel left on the cookie, and it comes away clean. Then, I dip the cookies, covered with chocolate on three sides, into coffee...like the world's most disgusting biscotti.

Foods you can't keep in the house because you can't stop yourself eating them

Cheez-its, which only seem to be eaten by the fistful around here, or my wife's dutch oven no-knead bread. I think I once ate an entire loaf in one sitting. Yay, carbohydrates!

Oysters on the half shell - what's the appeal?

Oh, the appeal...such a delicate flavor...like eating the ocean itself. Not to mention the pleasures of killing something with your teeth. Delicious.

Where to eat tasty food in Merida besides the market and Las Almendras?

If it's Sunday, eat from the carts at the craft market in the zocalo, by the cathedral. If it's not, tray El Fogoncito (one of the better chains). And if you've got money to burn, try La Recova in the north.

Most underused spices in home cooking?

We added dill to this year's post-Thanksgiving turkey noodle soup, and it as aMAZing.

Most underused spices in home cooking?

What do you think are the most underused spices in home kitchens? Paprika comes to mind (does anyone do anything with it other than sprinkle it on deviled eggs?), but I am interested in what others think are some overlooked spices.

thanks
