Science Chick's Profile

Athan's in Brookline, sadly meh

I find it amusing that the one item everyone seems to enjoy from Athan's is the croissant. We were there late one evening having an after dinner coffee, and saw staff members taking them out of a commercial freezer box and popping them into the oven!!! So much for fresh baked goods......

fried clams in southern New England

This will probably get moved to the Northern NE board....anywho, my favorite seafood place in southern Maine is Fisherman's Catch in Wells. Just a little south of Biddeford.

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee in the Boston Area?

Good point, StriperGuy. I would call first and inquire. Armeno is pretty persnickety about freshness, in my experience, so I tend to believe that they wouldn't sell something unless it met their standards. Since they are roasting onsite, they certainly have more control over that....but you never know!

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee in the Boston Area?

Pretty sure I saw it at Armeno Coffee Roasters, but that is in Northborough. If you love coffee, they are a pretty cool place to visit! Could pair it with a stop-in at Wegman's down the road...

Lunch/dinner must-hits between Boothbay and Bar Harbors?

One of my favorite places in Maine is Chase's Daily in Belfast. Wonderful vegetarian food with a killer bakery and lovely farmer's market. Great place to go with a toddler!

Can't stop thinking about Cape Cod!! Need suggestions for summer seafood near Brewster.

I chuckle when you say you never would have found it but for CH. I remember our first visit, after CH recs. We must have wandered around that darn shipyard for 15 minutes before we figured out where the restaurant was!!!!

Dimsum up/down hill alert!

Maybe made ahead of time and kept in the fridge, then steamed to order?

Chow-worthy in Nonantum?

Forgot about Chung Shin Yuan.....good call!

Chow-worthy in Nonantum?

Newton Corner...

Chow-worthy in Nonantum?

I'm curious, what ice creams in the area do you think are worse? JP Licks? Coney Island in W. Newton (forget which ice cream they are serving since they stopped selling Toscaninni's)? Surely JP Licks makes a decent ice cream soda, no?

Chow-worthy in Nonantum?

I'd have to respectfully disagree with the Cabot's rec. I don't know what the draw is to this place, other than perhaps nostalgia if you grew up there and frequented Cabots as your hangout. I think their ice cream is sickeningly sweet. But to each his own....

Also, technically they are in Newtonville, not Nonantum.....

Maria y Ricardo's New Corn Tortillas

Most WF stores carry all the different flour tortillas.....it's the corn ones that they rarely carry, so that you'll buy their store brand.

The Washington St. WF in Newton does the same thing with Iggy's WW baguettes....stopped carrying them so that you are forced to buy their store bakery one. The Beacon St. WF, however, still carries the Iggy's WW baguette. Maybe depends on what they bake in-house and are trying to push.

Why is Moody's Falafel palace boarded up?

THanks, yarm. Sounds like I should stop by soon!

FYI, 90% of line cooks these days are of Latin origin, so what you noticed is not all that odd. My FAVORITE falafel place on the East Coast, Taim in the NYC West Village, is owned by an Israeli woman, but all the cooks are Spanish speaking.

Chow-worthy in Nonantum?

Have fun! Be aware that Steamers is a fishmonger and the prepared food is really takeout only.

Chow-worthy in Nonantum?

Fiorellas, which is off the main drag on North Street is excellent and moderately priced, so usually very busy. Antoine's pastry shop is outstanding....matches the best of the North End! Across the street is Vecchia Roma, a little fancier, small and intimate and excellent Italian food.

Maria y Ricardo's New Corn Tortillas

thanks, opchef...yes, I've used the TJs ones, and they are pretty good. Honestly, I picked up a massive pack of some brand in the Latin section at Wegmans and they were really pretty tasty. I don't know the maker... Very soft, light. The type you need to double up on. I froze them in packs of 6 for meals and they freeze very well too. Probably not as "natural" as I normally like, but better than TJs or those nasty WF ones.

Maria y Ricardo's New Corn Tortillas

I have consistently had a difficult time getting Maria y Ricardo's corn tortillas at WF stores over the past couple of years. They only seem to carry their own brand, which are coarse, thick and nasty as can be. Maybe your encounter is a good omen of things to come.......I'll certainly keep my eyes open for these!! Thanks, almansa!

Kitchen Nightmares heads to Galleria 33

I love the Wicked Local blurb that ends with "Barefoot Bob's award-winning chowder and lobster rolls", in an article about KN coming to rescue them!

Any good Asian markets near Needham/Newton

Acck! They've closed! Oh no!!! Sorry for the bum idea.....

Kelly's, Sullivan's, or Bell Isle ?

@MC-Oh you must go! I thought the OP was also broadening his search to "best bang for buck" and "something fun to do".....didn't think he was only limiting himself to the things he initially suggested.......

Any good Asian markets near Needham/Newton

How about Jin Mi Oriental Market in Newtonville on Walnut Street?

Kelly's, Sullivan's, or Bell Isle ?

MC, I'm surprised you wouldn't include Tony's on Wollaston Beach on par, or sometimes better, than Belle Island. Equal distance from downtown as well, with better beach vibe.

Best Fresh Bagels In Boston?

I would agree with paper then plastic. Letting them cool in plastic turns *any* bread product into fluffy wonderbread!

Places to get good Seafood in MA, NH, or Maine coasts?

I would second Fisherman's Catch in Wells, ME. You can sit down in their enclosed porch, with lovely views of the marsh (they provide binoculars on all the tables). Table service and the food can't be beat. Off the main drag, so really not touristy at all. Our favorite place (we take special daytrips up from Boston just to enjoy this place!).

Inexpensive Salads -- Need Panera Alternatives

The salads are D'Angelos are usually passable, and they give you a nice pita with them. If health concerns are primary, here is the link to their salads. You can click on any one of them and get a popup with the nutritional info. They aren't limited to these though....they'll throw a scoop of anything you want on top. I usually splurge and get the Lobster on a garden salad.

My last Speed's Dog

You are welcome g-maniac......definitely portrays the Speed's vibe. Although my meat-eating days are now long since past, I still fondly daydream about the perfect dog, and the summer my sister and I were on a quest to find it (circa 1979 Hartford area/chili preferably). Your sketch brought me to that place, and I hope captured an iconic Boston spot for those who still indulge! :)

Victors Felafel

They actually closed for a while and apparently re-opened a little while ago. I pass by there every morning on the way to work and noticed they looked open again. Trufflehound, are you sure they bake their falafel? Never heard of that...only familiar with the fried version. What style is it (Israeli in a pocket, or Lebanese rollup? Highly spiced?)?

My last Speed's Dog

gourmaniac - Is that your own lovely whimsical sketch of Speed's?

South Shore Mother's Day by the Beach

BTW, It's Hull, not Hingham as I originally said. Here's their link....they are suggesting making reservations for Mother's Day....

Japanese style hot dogs in Ctown: Fei Fan Eatery

With a nod to Kobayashi, do I have to eat somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 of them in 10 minutes? ;)
