small affordable olive oil producers

In France, one could go to the producer's market or to a small oil shop in the countryside and taste/buy amazing olive oils for only $20-$25/L. In Spain it's even cheaper.
Even a fancy shop like Olivier & Co sells a liter new harvest for only 30€, which it sells in the US for $60. I've searched online and it seems good quality is $60/L min.

I'm sure there are lots of small producers here in California, anyone know a good source for oils directly from the producer for cheaper than the fancy shops in the big cities?

Beijing-- where to live?

Thank you Kris!
I was originally thinking to stay close to Sanlitun, because that's where my guy lives, but it's super expensive and so far I've only seen soulless small supermarkets.
"definition of organic" Ha! I forgot that it's all flexible here! I mean non-GMO food produced without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. If organic is a genuine point of interest for groceries in Beijing, it shouldn't be too far for me to find. I never shopped at Carrefour in France, because the markets and local organic stores are just so much better, but if that's my only option for organic food I can trust here, then I'm not at all above it.

quiet restaurant around or under 50E

I wish I had thought of that, Parigi! I ended up being lazy and unadventurous, so we went to Lao Lane Xang 2 down the street again, and don't regret it one bit. In fact, I ate there for every meal (5 days!) when I was packing to move out of Paris in December.

Beijing-- where to live?

If food shopping is the only criterion for choosing where you live, what neighborhood would you live in?

I'm contemplating moving to Beijing, cooking is very important to me, so shopping only in foreign grocery stores won't work, I'll need soulful local markets with seasonal produce. If there's an area with a high concentration of organic produce (yes, I'm dreaming big), that would be fantastic.

Thanks for any input!

Anyone for $100 cognac-infused dog ?

OMG! I thought it was dog, as in WOOF WOOF dog!! I have a habit of opening links and not looking at them until later, so I was totally confused when reading the comments, even with the Costco hot dog comment, it didn't register...until I opened the link that you were talking about a hot dog!

Blood Orange Question

Bravo.
I've always wondered the same thing, and instead of asking, I just concluded that I was crazy, not the oranges.

the best cheap & a few not so cheap eats in paris?

This board talks about Michelin-starred lunch deals all the time; a little search should be helpful.
If staying in the Marais, for cheap, I say you'll have to go eat from the Manouche stand in front of the Pompidou, on rue Rambuteau. If you're facing the museum, it's on the left side of the street.

Something special for 25th Anniversary

I love Aureole, but it's on the strip. Pamplemousse is pretty good, but the food doesn't change much.

Arpege?

hmm, interesting, I ate there once in September and once in November, for lunch both times (if that makes a difference in their reservation policy), and they did not ask for a CC on either occasion.

What's the early word on Verjus?

item #1 on the menu 2 weeks ago (don't know if still on there) is really really good. so good that it turned on my taste buds again, which had been turned off during my month in China.

Why does this make me kind of sad? even though I don't have anything against M&S and technically don't even live in Paris anymore.

Stevia? Love it or hate it?

funny how you guys all hate it! I only use sugar, honey and syrup (so all sugar, really) to sweeten my things, but I love the taste of stevia, so I chew on a leaf once in a while when I'm bored at my computer. snacking on it by itself or putting one to decorate a ball of sorbet, the same way as mint, are the only ways I've ever consumed it...because the taste is just too yummy to be covered by other things!

What's wrong (if anything) with this picture?

"too small" was my first thought too! on both the knife and the cutting board.
Being raised in a Chinese family, I only know how to use meat cleavers to cut anything.

le Reminet. it can be reserved on lafourchette.com with a 40% discount promo!

The Auchan at Kremlin Bicetre is really good, only one station outside of Paris on line 7, but make sure you take the Line 7 to Villejuif, not Mairie d'Ivry.

it's easy to spend $$$$$ where do the common folk of Paris eat?????

funny how you consider eating out at a good restaurant once or twice a month to be a lot.
People always ask if I eat out often, and I always say "no, only once or twice a month"...precisely because it's too expensive...and 35/day/person is more than enough if I average out the days I eat out and the ones I don't.

Get rid of yeast smell/taste in dough products

I don't think you can get sourness without doing at least some sourdough. Even when you use only sourdough starter to leaven your bread, it still needs a long fermentation to be any sour, otherwise it's just sweet.
I can't stand the yeast taste either, which is why I never bake with just commercial yeast.

Ranking of steak cooking methods?

for me it's always this:
1. sear
2. sous vide
3. sear+flamber or "disposable chopsticks grill" (I just pile old chopsticks in the middle of my butane stove, light it up for a bit, then turn off the stove so it's only the chopsticks burning)

Is cornflour in UK baking the same as cornstarch in US baking?

yes.
UK cornflour = US cornstarch.
US cornflour = UK cornmeal

Food preservatives and chemicals

I just say "I only eat food", and those chemicals ain't food. Just like I only use natural fibers and not polyxxxxxx anything for clothing, bed sheets, duvet filling or anything, because I don't wear plastic.
