Raleigh---- July

You should post this question on the Southeastern board. But that being the case, we were just in Raleigh a couple of weeks ago and had a lovely dinner at Second Dinner (we sat in the tavern but ordered mostly from the main menu). Creative (but not over-the-top) cooking and very good service.

My SIL and her BF also enjoyed their meal at Second Empire on a prior night. They also went to Bida Manda and, while they thought the restaurant was lovely, found the cuisine "just OK" - it may be that much of the menu was very familiar to those of us who frequent Thai and Vietnamese restaurants.

Wilmington delivery options/transportation to downtown area

No need for scaremongering - while one should always be aware of their surroundings, crime on Market Street in Wilmington isn't an issue though it tends to be more lively when there’s an event at the Grand or the Queen.

Neither Joe’s Crab Shack nor Big Fish is worth a trip - you may as well hit Bonefish Grill at Concord Mall. Harry’s Seafood is a much better choice on the Riverfront or Deep Blue downtown. Iron Hill is good for its beers but its food tends to be just OK.

With a car, you could go downtown to La Fia, Pochi, or DiMeo’s. It would also be an easy ride to Little Italy.

Bistro Jacques in Wilmington, DE

Haven’t been but up until last year it was called Mona Lisa Euro Bistro.

Is there ANY restaurant at all worth going to in Wilmington, DE?

How does it compare to DiMeo's in downtown Wilmington? That's been our go-to for consistent quality pizza for the past few years - we think it's better than Pizzeria Vetri in Philly and have never been much impressed with Elizabeth's (nor much else in Greenville or Centreville - though we've had good luck with Cromwell's Mexican menu, believe it or not).

Has Anyone Been to the Fair Hill Lately?

This is the first I heard that the Fair Hill was sold - no mention at all of it in their emails. Any idea what Phil Pyle and Brian Shaw are up to now?

Wegman’s Coming to Delaware?

Considering that the opening date for the planned Concordville Wegman's is still listed on their website as TBD (To Be Determined), it would likely be a ways off.

Wegman’s Coming to Delaware?

Very preliminary and unverified but I heard today through some Delaware grocery pros that Wegman’s may be bringing a store to the part of the Cavaliers Country Club near Christiana Mall that is being developed.

Is there ANY restaurant at all worth going to in Wilmington, DE?

Curious as to why this thread was resurrected after over a year.

I have to say though that we have found that Delaware Mag's People's Choice or the Snooze-Journal's Reader's Choice designations are the kiss of death. We generally know we're going to be disappointed when we see that designation. (Case in point, the old Pan Tai on Union Street being named Best Thai restaurant by readers for a number of years.)

Anniversary dinner - wilmington , DE area

Fair Hill Inn is a great choice but it may be too far depending on where OP is in NCC. We're in North Wilmington and Fair Hill is a 45 minute drive while Center City Philly is only 30 minutes away.

Fresh fish in New Castle county?

I've heard good things about Dawson's Seafood. They are predominately a restaurant supplier but also sell retail (cash only).

Delaware Online is running mini-reviews by staffers of restaurants participating in Delaware Dines Out this week on Patricia Talorico's Second Helpings blog.

DH got a not-so-glowing review:

The News Journal (which is a sponsor of Delaware Dines Out) tends to steer clear of negative remarks in its reviews so this strikes me as fairly harsh by its usual standards.

While restaurant weeks like DDO with their limited menus aren't the best way to get a true taste of a restaurant, the service issues described are disappointing at a place like DH which used to pride itself on the quality of its service and personnel.

Where Can I get Decent Steaks at a Fair Price in the Wilminton DE area?

Even though ShopRite is my default supermarket (partly due to being raised in Northern NJ), I can't recommend them for their steaks. They're not well-marbled and are cut too thin to be cooked properly. I've gotten much better steaks at the Safeway on Foulk Road.

Dinner In Wilmington DE

We were at DH for the first time under the new owners for Mother's Day brunch (I believe the old chef had left right before then). The limited menu struck us as unremarkable with a very disappointing selection that seemed out of place for brunch. Even with the place only half-full, service wasn't up to the standard we had come to expect from DH.

However, a couple with two young children were sitting behind us. Being Mother's Day, I didn't think anything of it. But the youngest kept tossing his silverware to the floor and crying intermittently creating a bit of a racket. I know that this can't be helped but the parents didn't think to take their child outside until he calmed down and the wait staff kept picking up the tossed silverware. Finally, the family finished their meal and left but I later saw the father standing in the back of the restaurant near the register by the kitchen. I later learned to my consternation that the couple were the new owners of DH.

Specialty & Gourmet Food Shop Gift Card Suggestions

We're going to a relative's wedding in Los Angeles at the end of next month. We bought cookware off the couple's gift registry but want to add a gift card to an area specialty or gourmet food shop to make it a little more personal. I don't know the couple very well, but as best as we can determine, they like to entertain and cook along a broad spectrum of cuisines. Any and all suggestions on where to get a gift card would be most welcome.

Casual but delicious dinner in Wilmington, DE?

Eclipse wouldn't be a bad choice. It's definitely not white tablecloth and you don't have to have a full-blown dinner there. Last time we were there we had the burger and the pork sandwich. And it's not too far from 95.

I have to agree that La Tolteca is pretty bad even when compared to other less authentic Mexican places in the area.

As for Iron Hill, I think it's more accurate to say that while the food isn't Chow-worthy, the beer is.

Szechuan Restaurant- Wilmington, DE

The authentic menu at Szechuan is in English - no need to ask for a translation. And it's not a separate menu, the authentic items are clearly marked on the first couple of menu pages. Additional items are found on their specials board and there are some off-menu items like soup dumplings (which are regularly found on their DIm Sum menu offered on Saturdays and Sundays).

You can check out their authentic menu at their website:

Simba Tropical Grill? (Claymont DE)

The latest issue of Spark had a "review" of Simba:

It looks interesting and definitely something different - most African cuisine I've had in the past was either West African or Ethiopian/Eritrean. It would be nice if something like this could help break the Tri-State Mall curse.
