Upscale in Virginia Beach

Best upscale in Virginia Beach is Terrapin closely followed by Zoe's.

Norfolk/Virginia Beach Restaurant Week.... where did you go?

I enjoyed Burton's Grill this past weekend.I started with their she crab soup- good flavor but very rich. For dinner I had the Mediterranean chicken- nice juicy chicken breast topped with a goat cheese/ sundried tomato spread served a top risotto. I ended the night with flourless chocolate torte- again a very rich dish. There was a little wait though we had reservations but once we were seated our server was fantastic. Despite being a chain I would certainly dine here again.

New Soup Thread for 2012...

Loving this thread! When the weather turns chilly I make soup weekly to take to work for lunches. Favorites include
Curried Butternut squash soup with broccoli
Asian vegetarian hot pot
Provencale chicken and sausage stew
Beef stew with butternut squash
Curried lentil soup
Southwestern vegetarian black bean soup

Recommendations for birthday dinner

They live in te Westchase area and usually frequent Clearwater/Dunedin since that is where they grew up. Geographically we'd open to anywhere from Clearwater/Palm Harbor to downtown/South Tampa. I was thinking maybe Kona Grill or a brazilian steakhouse since it would be familiar enough for them but not something they would chose on thier own.

Recommendations for birthday dinner

I guess it would help if I stated where! We will be visiting our family in Tampa next week and I would definitely appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

Recommendations for birthday dinner

We will be taking my sister-in-law(husband's sister) and her husband out for a birthday celebration next week. They are not very adventurous eaters (steak, some seafood and Italian are their mainstays), but my husband and I are. Since the Melting Pot near them has closed (their choice every year) we finally get a chance to broaden their horizons a little and I would love some recommendations. As always any advice is appreciated!

Norfolk VA Attucks theatre neighborhood.

What kind of food/price point are you looking for?For upscale I'd recommend Todd Jurich's Bistro or Byrd and Baldwyn Steak. For midrange I like Bodega for Spanish/Mediterranean tapas; The Big Easy for New Orleans style food; and Snapper's for good seafood/drinks. I'd also recommend Bardo's for asian inspired tapas and drinks and Luna Maya for creative latin american food, both of the latter 2 are in the historic Ghent area which is a 5 minute drive from downtown.

What are you making for Christmas breakfast?

I think I get more excited about Christmas breakfast than I do about presents! Traditionally I've made a baked orange-pecan french toast but this year I'm toying with the idea of making razzies(think cinnamon roll with raspberry swirl instead of cinnamon). Always on the menu are scrambled eggs with Boursin, bacon and fresh pineapple. What's on your menu for breakfast morning?

Bumper crop of thai chiles

Thanks for all the responses! Loving the idea for vinegar as well as making my own thai chile paste. Any good recipes for the latter?

Simple food which you love

Grilled cheese and tomato soup!

Visiting Dec 26-28 -- what not to miss?

As someone who recently traveled to Seattle for a few days and stayed downtown we enjoyed Serious Pie, Trabant(coffee) Top Pot Doughnuts and the Steelhead Diner. I'm not usually a tour person but I wholeheartedly recommend one of Savor Seattle's Food Tours. It was a fun way to sample a lot of Pike Place Market's treats in a short amount of time. http://www.savorseattletours.com/

Bumper crop of thai chiles

What should I do with them? Thanks for any suggestions!

Crouqembouche questions

I plan on making a croquembouche for a Christmas party in a few weeks. I have made cream puffs successfully so I am confident that will be fine. I would like to use a chocolate sauce as the mortar, does anyone have a good recipe that would give me the right consistency? Also I was curious, when guests are eating the croquembouche is there any difficulty removing the individual cream puffs? I'd hate for my guests to rip off half a cream puff and have the pastry cream get messy. Any advice is always appreciated!

Any good recs for Charlotte?

Thanks again for all the recs. We ended up eating at Cowfish on Friday and Copper on Saturday. Cowfish was a a great, fun Friday night place sitting on the patio with decent live music. I was really surprised how good both the sushi and the burgers were and the mixed drinks were done well. I loved the decor in Copper and that they had a different twist on Indian.

Any good recs for Charlotte?

Thanks for the recs! The South Park Mall area sounds like my best bet since we will be in seminars all day. Halcyon sounds great but sounds like it may be a bit too pricy for what we're looking for this time.

Any good recs for Charlotte?

I did a previous search and read through several of the threads but having never been to Charlotte the specifics aren't quite helpful yet, hence the general question. Thank you for your very helpful response though.

Calling All Hampton Roads Chowhounds!

Just wanted to share a recent delectable restaurant find! I've recently been seeking out small ethnic restaurants and came across a gem with Carmello's located in Loemann's Plaza in Virginia Beach. It's a Dominican restaurant/bakery run by a sweet younger Dominican couple. For dinner my husband enjoyed the chiccarones with mofongo and I had 2 appetizers; chicken croquettes and a dish I can't recall the name of but it was like a tamale with shredded beef and mashed plantain instead of masa. To drink I enjoyed naturales con leche y guava(think a slightly more liquidy guava smoothie). They also have a bakery case and while all the desserts look delicious I'm afraid I have spoiled myself on the quatro leches cake which is by far one of the best desserts I've had anywhere. This gem of a restaurant is definitely worth a visit!

Any good recs for Charlotte?

I will be in Charlotte for work this weekend staying near the airport. What area or neighborhood in Charlotte should I be looking for some fun places for dinner.?Ideally we would like an area we could walk around. As far as specific restaurants we are looking for places

Good seafood market in Norfolk/Virginia Beach?

Pretty straight forward question, just looking for a good seafood market/fishmonger in South Hampton Roads. As always any advice is appreciated.

Good date night recommendations please

Cashion's was perfect for what we wanted, thanks so much for the recs! I started with the spiked cider, it was a little colder outside than I expected and that warm spicy goodness hit the spot. For an appetizer we had the charceuterie plate, it was good but not amazing-the item that was a standout was the truffled deviled egg. I could easily eat a dozen of those and I am totally making those for my next dinner party. For dinner(no bison on the menu tonight) I ordered the rockfish over cauliflower puree and my husband had the short ribs, both entrees were fantastic. I'd also like to add that I get excited when brussels sprouts are cooked well and Cashion's did not disappoint. For dessert we hoofed it down Conn. Ave to Dolcezza. Artisan gelato and choice of single origin coffee? Yes please. I had the dulce de leche and its reputation is certainly well earned. Thanks for steering me toward a night of good eats!

Good date night recommendations please

How dressy should we be? Should I go with nice jeans and a cute top or dress and tall boots?

Good date night recommendations please

Made reservations for Cashions for Friday, I'm being tempted by the bison hanger steak. Will also try to stop by the Gin Joint prior to dinner. Thansk for all the recommendations!

Good date night recommendations please

Looked at websites with my husband last night, Proof and Cashions seem very appealling for this trip. Planning on Open City Cafe for breakfast the next morning, loved it the last time I stayed in this area.

By all means, keep them coming!

Good date night recommendations please

Palena,Dino and Central look good and looking at other threads so do Rasika and Cafe Atlantico. We're not afraid of venturing away from our hotel, the Metro makes everything fairly accessible and we love to walk!

Good date night recommendations please

We are a couple in our mid 30's and will be visiting DC next weekend. Looking for a fun somewhat upscale to upscale restaurant with great food for Friday night. We will be staying at the Omni Shoreham so as far as neighborhood we are willing to go anywhere the Metro will take us. We are adventurous eaters who enjoy any cuisine, it just needs to be good! As always any suggestions are appreciated.

Best Mexican or Latino food in VA Beach

Mojito Cafe near the oceanfront has great Puerto Rican (and mojitoes of course). Get the mufongo, you will be very happy.

Hampton Roads Vietnamese

Any recommendations? I have yet to try Vietnamese cuisine and I'm feeling adventurous this weekend.

Sunday in Norfolk, Monday in Virginia Beach

Terrapin is fantastic but I don't think they're open for lunch. As far as VB seafood you can't go wrong with Tautogs IMO.

Restaurant week in Hampton Roads--reviews?

I went to Havana's in VB last week for dinner; I had the tortilla soup, chicken roulade stuffed with shrimp, scallops, black beans and goat cheese and bread pudding for dessert. The tortilla soup was tomato based and tasted like the inside of a red sauce enchilada. I was pleasantly surprised that chicken roulade was moist and juicy, I was expecting either the shrimp or scallop to be tough but neither was the case. The bread pudding was great, firm with a crispy top and a great caramel sauce. We also had very attentive service by the manager.

We will be going to Todd Jurich's Saturday night
