Thanks for recommendations! I am excited to do some sampling there and will definitely try those vinegars.

Vom Fass Recommendations?

I was thinking of buying some last minute gifts at Vom Fass. Does anyone have any favorites that I should try/buy?

Beer Theme Ideas

I am planning a beer "education" night. The group I am a part of does monthly meetings and I am in charge of December. We usually do food and beer pairings or focus on a style of beer that last an couple hours. Has anyone participated in any events like this that they thought were particularly fantastic?

Things we've done in the past include visits to breweries, beer and sausage/cheese/chocolate pairings, beer cocktails, autumn beers, German beers to name a few.

Thanks for any ideas you might have!

Stretching Maple Syrup

Nope. I'm doing it. I will use the real stuff for myself or others who enjoy the real thing. But I won't buy the fake stuff and don't want to be the syrup police for those who don't care as much as I do. Even the grade B isn't that cheap.

Stretching Maple Syrup

Has anyone ever had luck cutting maple syrup with homemade sugar syrups, honey, etc. to make it last longer? What did you use and what ratio of other syrup to maple syrup did you use?

Recipe using garlic habeñero cream cheese?

I love the combination of a sweet pepper jelly and cream cheese on crackers. Not a main, but I bought the new spicy jalapeno cream cheese and it was too spicy for morning bagels and that's how we repurposed it.

V & V what's for dinner?

We did some Cuban beans and rice with fried plantains last night and had a jalapeno Mexican Mule to wash it down.

Last week we had a white pizza with morels, onions and preserved lemon marmalade that was pretty great. We also used eggplant caponata (from preservation kitchen) and zucchini on one and a fig olive tapenade (from dave liebovitz) with shaved asparagus. I'd eat any of those again.

Nothing too exciting tonight: homemade bread, green soup and salad (may try an avocado Caesar style dressing).

I also made a green garlic, cilantro, and jalapeno hummus. Very guacamole like but no browning.

Easy Vegan Snacks

I really like fresh snap peas with hummus and adding carrots sounds marvelous. And I totally love the idea of almond butter with dates - I may have to sandwichify that.

Good to know about the primal jerky - I wonder if I could DIY something along those lines.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Easy Vegan Snacks

I had forgotten three bean salad! I like the asparagus twist even though it only has two beans.

Easy Vegan Snacks

I've had baked chickpeas, but haven't tried making them myself. I was also going to try to make socco, so I'll get a little extra flour and try frying it.

Microwaves Are Essential for Things We Don't Need Them For

I find it very useful for melting butter for popcorn or softening butter for cookies/cakes (~60 seconds on defrost setting). It is also the only way I can make to make decent steamed rice as I lack a rice cooker (and didn't do very well with the one I did have). Also really like it for reheating leftovers, pre-cooking potatoes, melting chocolate, nuking forgotten cups of coffee, and making a quick egg cheese strata.

Easy Vegan Snacks

I've made homemade kale chips before - do they store well? They don't usually last too long and are a bit time consuming. Commercial ones seem a bit pricey. I've been eating the nori strips as an alternative when I need a low-cal salt fix.

Trying to think of alternatives to nuts/trail mix, celery/apple and PB, or hummus. Maybe a bean or lentil salad? Bean dip and some tortilla chips?

Easy Vegan Snacks

Anyone have any easy/quick/filling vegan snacks that are staples for them? Things that require little prep for lunches or when you need a little something to make it until dinner. If its something I could prep once or twice a week that is good cold, that works too.

Midwest Vegetarian Destinations

Thanks weinstein5! I have been meaning to go to some of Rick Bayless's restaurants. I will definitely look into the others - the diner looks great!

Midwest Vegetarian Destinations

Anyone have any recommendations for vegetarian restaurants in the Midwest? Or very vegetarian friendly ones? Bonus if it is in a fun town. Just trying to come up with some inspiration for weekend trips and a few great restaurants might help. Bonus if it has good beer or well done cocktails and is in or near neat communities. Vegan is fine too of course.

We're live near Madison, WI and have lived in Milwaukee and Iowa City and are pretty familiar with what those locations have (Shout out to Green Owl, Comet Café, and Trumpet Blossom respectively!).

Headed down to Pig Minds in Rockford, IL area in the near future...

Wedding appetizer buffet with no electricity

-Individual tortilla chips topped with nacho ingredients
-Tortellini/salami/tomato/mozz/olive/etc skewers
-Cold shrimp wrapped in a snow pea on a toothpick jabbed into a head of cabbage
-Sausage wrapped in puffed pastry, sliced then baked
-Bacon wrapped dates (or anything)
-chicken or tofu satay skewers with peanut sauce
-snow peas or cucumber slices with hummus
-dill pickles wrapped in cream cheese and dried beef
-deviled eggs
-mashed potato martinis - martini cups filled with mashed potato then a variety of things to top them with (cheese, sour cream, broccoli, gravy, salsa, etc)

I agree that a couple chafing dishes could really increase the variety of things you're able to offer.

Seeking Milwaukee Restaurant for 40 People

I just moved away from Milwaukee and Blue's Egg and Maxie's (their dinner restaurant) are among the things I miss most. They have really great staff too!

Gas Station food offerings

Casey's in the Midwest has good cake doughnuts. Fresh and a bit crispy on the outside. A lot of them fry them on premise. I also like their brewed iced tea. Pizza isn't bad either.

Best GF spaghetti?

If you can find RP's pasta, their gluten free pasta is fantastic. My boyfriend likes it better than regular pasta - it is fresh so that helps.

Cranberry Shortbread Bars with Almond Streusel

These were quite good. Nice ratio of crumbly and sweet. I added almond extract too, which didn't hurt anything. The streusel top was quite crumbly - I couldn't get it into the "kidney bean" type clumps as they instructed. I will probably partially melt the butter next time to get the streusel topping a little more cohesive.

Healthy for Halloween?

I saw clementines that someone had taken a marker to and painted jack-o-lantern faces.

What is your dirty little food secret?

Saltines with butter.
Canned pears with shredded cheddar.
Peanut butter sandwich with sliced tomato.
McDonalds french fries dipped in their vanilla shake.

What is your dirty little food secret?

There is a restaurant in the Quad Cities (The Belgian Village) that makes a reuben on raisin bread. They are fantastic and beyond huge. Worth a drive if you're withing a few hours

Cooking with barbeque sauce

Anyone have ways they like to use barbeque sauce (sweet kind) for vegetarian cooking?
Broiling or grilling tofu or tempeh are the only things I've come up with.

Midwest Foodie Road Trip

McBob's also has fantastic corned beef hash too. Three Brothers (cash only) is also destination worthy. Besides the bureks, I really liked their serbian sausages with cabbage and serbian salad.

I'd also recommend Kopp's custard and Glorioso's Italian Market. I'd recommend splitting a dish of one of Kopp's daily custard flavors(and a burger if you're hungry). At Glorioso's you could get some of their interesting pantry items for souvenirs - like canned seafood, dried pasta, olive oil, wine. Glorioso's has good sandwiches and premade lasagna rolls and rice balls. They sell Italian cookies there too but Peter Sciortino's Bakery is 1 block away and has a much bigger selection.

Pacific Produce is a huge huge asian grocery store on the south side - also a fun place to look around. They sell a cheap Bahn mi. Leon's frozen custard is also around there.

We just moved from Milwaukee to Madison about a month ago and those are the things I miss already.
