Looking for Dungeness crab fat (tomalley) recipe

With crab season upon us, I purchased two very angry specimens yesterday (approx. 2lbs each) and steamed in a little vinegar and saltwater. They meat was sweet and delicious, but I still have half a bowl of crab fat (tomalley) from the top shell. Aside from eating it straight, anybody have any recipes or ideas? Thanks in advance.

need source for good gravy in SF or peninsula

I'm frying a brined turkey this Thursday and so I won't have any pan drippings. Any suggestions for a good store bought gravy?

Looking for fried won tons in SF or peninsula

Those were yelp reports I read. I guess I'll go back to Kam's. Thanks Melanie.

Looking for fried won tons in SF or peninsula

I need to bring a tray some for a pot luck. I used to enjoy the version of Kam's on Balboa, but I've read recent negative reports. I'm looking for won tons and not just the fried skin. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Fantastic report. Glad you had a great time and dined well alone. One thing to note, SFO has pretty good food. :)

Fried won ton appetizers in peninsula

I've a pot luck to attend this weekend, and though not authentic, I know these will be enjoyed. I typically get them from Kam's on Balboa, but it's just too far. Kam's makes them larger than your standard, with a blend of pork & green onion in wheat wrap.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

how to tame an onion?

I love red onions, but this past month, the flavor has just been too strong for a raw green salad. Any suggestions?

Prepared Thanksgiving Turkey Meals

Recovering from an arm injury, I've decided not to cook but ordering a complete Thankgiving meal. In addition, thinking about all the energy, gas, electric and physical, has certainly make take out an option. I know it's tradition, but for once, I'd like to sit down, watch football and maybe concentrate on more appetizers. So does anyone have any recommendations? I understand Mollie Stone has a $129 complete dinner for 10-12 which sounds like a deal if you consider all the work. Has anyone tried that? Thanksgiving is around the corner :)

Here's a 2006 line from the Chronicle.

Twice-cooked pork?

Little Sichuan in San Mateo, yummy, yummy. You've got the leeks and black beans. Some days are oilier (sp?) and saltier (too many black beans). Other days are heaven.

Tai Wu Daly City dissapointment

Had dinner for my daughter's bday last night. Party of six was $200. We had:

Chicken corn soup - ehhhh
Scallop and snow peas - ehhh
Clams with black bean sauce - ehhhh
Walnut prawns - are u kidding me? Dark looking shrimp, measly portion
Peking porkchop - good
Peking Duck ($22) - yuck. Have you ever seen dark gray colored duck meat? Very livery. Skin was decent though.
Tai Wu Crispy Crab ($28) - what a joke. Must've been less than a pound. No meat on the crab. Prep work was messy.
Combination chow mein - yum.

Dining room was half full. Clientele was all Chinese speaking families and it looked like a lot that was ordered was off-menu stuff. Saw Mr. Fong was in the house, so I was really expecting more and don't think it was on off night. Service was slooooow and not attentive.

We won't be returning anytime soon :(

Best Amaebi in SF or Peninsula

Wife likes the fried head even more than the body. It would be great if the sushi was great too. Thanks!

Best Mexican Menudo in Bay Area?

I enjoy the version from El Huarache at the Sat. Alemany Farmers market so much. It's comforting and tripee in a good way. Perfect on a cold morning after a hards night drinking. Combine that with the yummy pupusas from the next booth make for a great breakfast. Does anyone know if menudo is always served with pozole or is that an entirely different dish.

Just had Menudo at Charlie's taqueria in San Mateo after a recommendation. Not my type, just to darn piggy and gamey.

Indian spiced grilled lamb chops - need help

Hello, does anybody know how to achieve the earthy, smokey, spicey goodness from grilling lamb chops with indian spicing? I know it can be achieved through the tandoori oven, but I've just had some grilled (Berekeley Int'l food festival) and it was heaven. Any help is appreciated? If it's a spice rub, I can just buy, any product names would be great. Happy July 4th!

Need fun, delicious dinner near the Mart

There will be 8 of us attending Neocon and I need to make the reservations soon. Coming from San Francisco, we would like places that are unique to Chicago. Since it's company paid, price isn't so much an issue, but we don't want to go anywhere stuffy or too upscale. Our palates are very diverse, so we are really open to anything. Thanks in advance!

the Eternal Tripitas Taco Crawl

Not in your neck of the woods, but I find the tripas at El Charrito in San Carlos to be the best. When they do it right, it's like crunchy little calamari rings with just the right ammount of tripey goodness. I find the inside of the rings of Vallarta's and Toyanese's version to be too livery in texture and taste, but then again, some might like that.

Zachary's Pizza?

The last few times I've eaten there, the sauce and the tomatoes they top on the deep dish pizza's were acidic and sour (in a bad way). Thought it was just a bad batch, but everytime I've been, this was the case. It's still good, but not worth the lines.

Looking for bone marrow bones

After stumbling across a recipe on bone marrow bones, I'm interested in adapting Fergus Henderson's recipe. Where can I find fresh meaty veal or beef bones in SF or peninsula?

Thanks!

Dynamite taqueria in Belmont...El Metate

I'm with you here. It's average at best. If you're in the area, try El Charrito (sp?) instead.

Why not El Metate? Beef is grey, more steamed than grilled. And I agree, tortilla is very doughy esp. when they make it a wet burrito with their ordinary salsa. On the plus side, fast and great salsa bar.

Birthday dinner for 30 ppl

Need suggestions for mother in law dinner. Party consists of grandparents as well as children Past few dinners have been at PPQ Dungeness Island so we're definitely ready for something new. PPQ was great because they have a semi private room upstairs for the kids to make noise and run around. Restaurant doesn't have to be asian or seafood heavy as there are definitely carnivores in the bunch. Please help as I don't want to end up at Tong Palance on Clement or Peony Place in Oakland which has already been suggested by other family members. Thanks in advance.

Best Macaroni and Cheese

the hyatt regency san francisco airport in burlingme has GREAT mac and cheese

Sushi Monster Devours Peninsula: The Big List v. 3.0

Just a quick note on Kaygetsu. Went there for lunch and was underwhelmed with the nigiri sushi. Pluses: Wonderul service and presentation. Fresh wasabi. Minuses: Expensive, fish was cut on the smallish size, vinegar not perceptable in the sushi rice. Stringy maguro.

Maybe it was on off day, and maybe I should've sat at the counter.

Will work for merguez sausages.

Just had the version from Couler cafe and it was good. Where can i find these lamb/beef beauties? I'd prefer to grill them on my own, so recs for butcher shops, specialty stores appreciated. I live in the city but will travel :)

PPQ First Timer - report

If I recally correctly, it's about $35 for a pound and half crab.

Rihab's bakery for sale

Just had a delicious lamb shawarma sandwich on their fabulous bread. Owner's tell me that they have to go back to their country. Enjoy while it's still around

The Road Back to Mandalay (San Francisco Burmese)

I'm sorry, but I've to disagree. Many of the dishes at Mandalay are one dimensional (read same sweet sauce). And not that it matters, but many of their dishes are offshoots of Burma's original creation (read Rainbow Salad). If they made it better, then it is a no issue, but there's reason that Mandalay is always empty and Burma SS is always crowded. Okay, crowds might not be the best source of chowish food, but years of lines must mean they're doing something right.

Excellent Food in Chinatown

Go to Great Eastern or Yuet Lee. Search the board for past reports. Really good stuff.

name the best tacos in the mission

Not authentic, but not fusiony in anyway, La Taqueria for awesome asada and lengua tacos. The board is divided on this one, but the lines out the door attest to it's taste.

Need rec's for chinese restaurant with affordable set menu

Please help me. I need something in SF or peninsula for a set menu for 8 adults and 4 children. I've been to Lee Hou, Jumbo, 8 Immortals as well as Koi Palace and R&G Lounge. I'm looking for something good in between those extremes in price.

I've heard good things about Great Eastern in Chinatown and their $85 set menu. Anyone try it lately?

Again, thanks Hounds.
