Best Margaritas....

The Border cafe...? it is a southwestern restaurant/bar in Harvard Sq and a branch in Burlington with plenty of parking.

Favorite Salads in Boston?

Beet salad at Gaslight & chopped salad at Maggiano's Table are my wife's favorites. I will try one from Sandrine's tonight, and must give a nod to Cafe Jaffa as well.

Mr. Swank and I need a "new" special occasion place!

Second Il Casale for the atmosphere and fresh pasta specials. They are doing good things in that old firehouse.

Time to update that list... favorite meals of 2012?

I have a list of restaurants on a Mac sticky that helps wifey and I decide where to go, when we occasionally need a little prodding. End of the year strikes that review cord, and going through my list I sure recall a bunch of memorable meals we enjoyed on our nights out. Take a moment Boston hounds, what meals were high on your list in 2012?

Who makes the best french fries in Boston?

2nd Uburger, right up there on the podium. Considering the deliciousness of the burger It is a wonder why Five Guys are sticking with their undercooked, over-sized, soggy fry recipe.

What's good lately? Italian / Seafood focus

Had the seafood risotto last night, terrific preparation with heirloom tomato and fresh sweet corn. Wifey had the veal saltimbocca, rich and lovely, & plenty to bring home. Terrific olive bread and saucers of olive oil to begin. The appetizers are $$ and really good. Tried the zucchini blossoms, foie gras, and the carpaccio. Yes, dessert too - chocolate souffle & the peach cobbler (the favorite). Charming vibe inside, looking forward to a return visit.

Five Horses Tavern -- promissing

Five Horses Tavern - Another Davis Square hit" - I know, there is a world outside DS ..

We like to sit at the upper bar of this place, even though it gets a bit loud as it gets later. In the mood for a killer appetizer, that nearly filled up 2 people? Get the spicy buttermilk fried chicken tenders (more like chicken scallopini). Bite after bite of spicy, hot, crunchy chicken with 2 nice dipping sauces. The pork belly taco is rich, the pickled onions have a tender crunch. We tried the cold sesame noodle side and 5HT version disappointed me. I wanted more soy, heat, sesame, zip. Grilled hanger steak for wifey was, well, rich too. Beautiful med-rare meat, (and yes) rich goat cheese & scallion mashed potato, salty sliced marinated mushrooms & thin green beans. Wide selection of beer & bourbon & wine. Reasonable food prices, attentive service, relaxing ambiance. Go, its good.

Lobster Dishes - Boston Dish of the Month August 2012

http://www1.whdh.com/features/article...

As you can see this is a fairly complex recipe. When I asked - the server told me The Lyles golden syrup is the magic ingredient.

Lobster Dishes - Boston Dish of the Month August 2012

Not a main dish but worthy of mention: Irresistibly good appetizer at Towne stove and spirits - lobster popovers (2 per order, $14) mmm mmm mmm.

Oh, and the Lobster salad sandwich at Alive & Kicking Lobsters for a mad $13.95, with chips!

My apologies for leaving you hanging - lo these many months..

Tre Monte in Woburn. Went last weekend and did have the shrimp scampi with fresh tagliatelle (help, I'm a meddler). Straightforward dishes we find very enjoyable. Service is sharp, prices are reasonable, there is a new rewards card program also.

Saloon - Go, it is good

It is dark, no windows or TVs. The giant arch with background mirror came from the old Newbury Street location of the Capital Grille, and the other wood work was built to match. Good speak-easy music mix. Knowledgable staff open to talking about the food. Deep fry talent - the beer battered pickled peppers are really tasty. As is the fish and chips, oh yes - I've yet to have the raved about Druid's, but this is my new favorite for now. Other choices on the menu will be tried. Wifey got the hamburger sliders, blue cheesed and shaved vegetable toppings build-your-own style. Champagne cocktails for the lady, icy shaken martini for the gent. Comfy place to cool your heels..

Spots wifey and I find fry haven - The Local in Newton, Capital Grille, Garden at the Cellar, and oddly enough - The Boarder Cafe.

Sail Loft - Great Lunch!

Quick day trip into town to walk around and nosh. It was hotter than the hinges on the doors of hell by the way... with most of the joints in the North End packed, we went the tourist route and headed for Atlantic Ave. Went into Joe's American. However, with the outside dining/windows open it was roasting inside. Answer - the Sail Loft a few doors down, with a/c. Yeah it is an old place, but the lunch there is pretty good. Wifey got a buffalo chicken sandwich, and I got to say after having a bite - so moist and spicy, stand-out good, wow. I got fish and chips, fresh and simple with a nice thin batter & good tartar. Now, we are french fry snobs, and the ones we got with lunch are standard fare - no rosemary-sea salt-parmesan-truffle oil "frites" at this old watering hole.

Towne Stove & Spirits soft open preview (opens July)

Three of us got bar seats in the back room, nicely lit & less busy than the front. The lobster popovers we shared (2 per order) are the star of the menu, do not miss this appetizer. We also got the hamachi tartare, the duck crisp, salmon crisp, and the skirt steak. I'd probably hit Scampo again over Towne - or visit Towne just for a cocktail and the popovers.

Habanero's: Mixed-Response Mexican in Waltham

We took seats at the bar for dinner, service was attentive, good drinks, not much of a wait at all for our orders. The habanero con queso with fresh fried chips, excellent cheesy heat and my new favorite aperitivo. My SO got the tortilla salad with carne asada - tasty but I wasn't jumping up and down. I tried the habanero enchiladas which I liked, I would have gone with the mole on the side - it is more cinnamon than rich... crazy with the cinnamon. A positive nod to the cocktails and fresh guacamole, frajitas next time!

Rave for La Posada

I second the Rave. I believe the best carne asada I have had to date. Wifey got most of the chori-queso app, I hear it was quite tasty. Byob/w or byo-marg. Very friendly little place, there is a line on the busy nights.

Excellent meal, enjoyed by our party of 6.

Appetizers we liked: Shrimp in grand mariner sauce, Melanzana, house bread, and the huge iceberg wedge salad with outstanding crunchy bacon.

Diners we liked: Stuffed chicken, chicken paradiso, fruitti di mare, lobster ravioli (yes, really).

Desserts we liked: profiteroles, and lava cake.

Friendly attentive service, we will be back to try the shrimp scampi.

Golden Garden

I wanted to like this place, I really did. We got take out, no problem there. The dumplings are very good, we got the pork with chinese cabbage.

I found the hot and sour soup, and the fried chicken fingers average. Better across town at Shangri-La.

I found the general tso's chicken uneatable, and based on that I doubt we will give the place a second try - other proven options in the neighborhood haven't let me down.

Nomination for Best Cuban Sandwich - Gustazo Belmont

Ah ha..! Finally I have seen the light - Chez Henri Cuban sandwich is too meaty. The Gustazo Cubano sandwich is about balance, and the bread they use is fantastic. No leftovers. We also enjoyed the substantial Empanadas platter appetizer. Gustazo is BYOB, btw.

Fiorella's post-renovation (slightly longish)

Quoted a 45 minute wait at 6pm Friday night, but as we went to order a drink the bartender offered us 2 seats at the bar... off to a good start! Notice at other area restaurants how the menu prices have jumped, for the same old food? Not here. The warm pizza dough bread steaks are great to munch on. The ceasar salad does not have raw egg or anchovy paste paste in it, so wifey dove right in - "delicious, fresh, bold, good crunch" .. I agreed. We got the antipasto salad too, plenty to share and the spicy eggplant compote has great flavor. Wifey got the veal saltimbocca, which she says was really nice; but you see, this dish served at La Cucina Sul Mare in Falmouth is wifey's holy grail. I didn't get a bite, I'll have to raid the leftovers. I had the swordfish over arugula topped with the signature marinara, the best $18 I've spent on a meal in a long time. Pumpkin cheesecake with caramel shared for dessert, grade A. We found the service top notch, and the new addition a huge improvement from the very cramped previous space.

The Local

A follow up is required, I took home the left over lobster mac & cheese and the next day put about "5 cents of ritz cracker crumb topping" on it, along with some salted butter, and stuck it under the broiler to crisp the topping. Could you believe, it was so darn good I almost fell off my chair. So, the next time I go to The Local, I'll bring my own "5 cents of ritz cracker crumb topping", a bit of salted butter, and ask the server to ask the kitchen to crumb, butter and broil my lobster mac & cheese.

The Local

If your going to offer lobster mac & cheese without a 5 cent ritz cracker crumb topping and stick it under the broiler for a few minutes....why bother? The truffle fries and fried pickles are good starters. Seems like this place could easily double their wait line by taking the food up a few easy notches. Wifey and I go once in a while, then remember why we don't go more often. Trying to get a seat at the small bar is a challenge, and if you get seated in the way back room, there is NO vibe whatsoever.

One of the best Boston Cream donuts I have ever had, and I've looked around. Crisp edges, incredible sugar buzz, don't eat before bed... or do.

Finally had the roast chicken at Hamersley's

Went last night for wifey's birthday..... and the roast chicken, both of us. Geez I did say 5 stars, but to nit-pick, I'm not crazy about the olives - in the drinks and the warm olive appetizer. I am not a fan of pitting olives in my mouth, but this is the way things have been and I guess that is how they will stay! I do love the bread, and the butter is good but could be better (go ahead and add some sea salt, or honey (Bergamot)). The service, the room, the vibe, and the chicken are fantastic and I plan to keep this place my special occasion go-to. Split the molten cake with ice cream for dessert with shaved chocolate and home made caramel sauce, and when I say split, I mean fought for every bite, next time I will order my own...

Davis Square's "Foundry on Elm"

Go early, we had a 6pm reso and we got in and out before the crowds. I agree the beer is kinda pricey, so I got a well crafted vodka martini, just one. Wifey had champagne cocktail which made her happy. Started with the Poutine, which wifey argued is a better gravy fry concoction than the version at Trina's Starlight Lounge. A delicious toss up IMHO. Wifey had the Banh Mi sandwich, crazy good. I got a pasta and shimp special with lots of delicious little extras in it.... cleaned the plate like a D O GG. We liked it, good vibe and will go back. Early.

Bergamot - outstanding!

Hard to give out 5 stars, yet I debated it. Stress-free free parking. Excellent staff that knows food, wine, and how to make a great cocktail. Started off with the cheese plate, all the cheese comes from Fromaggio Kitchen we were told. Choose any of the cocktails and the barmen will craft it for you like a work of art, fine selection of champagne, and wines by the glass. Alas, the lobster pierogies were only available on the pre-fix menu item the Friday night we went. I had been dying to try them, so if you want them I'd call ahead and find out availability. Sun1234, my wife had the griddle burger, which she (ahem), inhaled. She didn't know about it having marrow in it, and I didn't tell her. I got the oven roasted chicken, which was moist with a crisp skin and delicate pan sauce. And the bread, awesome. And the honey infused butter, even awesomer..
No dessert, no room, next time.

Best fries around???

The Local in West Newton... with a side of fried pickles. Parmesan truffle fries we now call "crack fries" / They are still working on the atmosphere of this place - one room hoping bar, one room kinda quiet.

Lord Hobo

The service, fries, and beer selection bumped this place from a 2 star to a 3. Maybe my expectations were too high. (Regrettably we hadn't consulted CH reviews..). Very noisy. No parking. More importantly, the food - Cuban sandwich - strangely tasty but pretty greasy. Mac and cheese - a bland, boring, flop. Deviled eggs - unremarkable, but then again the benchmark is my Mom's.. IF I could find parking, I may go again for an appetizer and a drink, but not a meal. And we had so wanted to be bowled over by the place.
