Hawaiian Sun juices in Boston area?

Haven't seen that brand specifically, but I recently bought some POG from Bolthouse Farms that was pretty good. I drink tons of Hawaiian Sun stuff when we go to Hawaii, but we haven't been in a few years now.

Overrated restaurants

Too bad. I will continue my quest! :)

It is much better than it used to be. We found some yummy Thai recently.

Overrated restaurants

Getting further OT, but if it's still there, would you share the name? We go to SLC to visit relatives once or twice a year and haven't found a good Chinese restaurant yet.

Seven Acre Poultry Farm, N. Reading.

We've been buying eggs from them for years. They've recently increased the price for large eggs from $2.25/2.50 to $3 I think, but it is still very reasonable and well worth it.

August 2012 Openings and Closings

Drove by Evenfall in Haverhill/North Andover (is this considered Greater Boston?) this evening and the parking lot was empty. Found a blog post by the owner that said he closed for a variety of reasons and would be focusing on his newer restaurants in Andover (Sauce, Andolini's).

So depressed ---East Asia is GONE

We lived a few houses down when I was at Tufts. Great food and a great loss to the area. Sad news.

Cupcake City in Reading?

We stopped in yesterday after picking up a chicken pot pie from Harrow's. The man at the counter was so friendly and happy to talk about the cupcakes and how they make them. He said they are all made in-house from scratch with all fresh ingredients that they get from Calareso's every day. He said nothing comes from a can or jar and the cupcakes have no preservatives. He suggested we eat them that day or the next or they could taste stale.

We bought 4 to try - carrot cake, signature chocolate, Hostess and strawberry shortcake. My husband loved the carrot cake and said it was the best of the 4. It was extremely moist and even felt heavy to hold. I love chocolate, but the chocolate was almost too chocolatey. But I still ate it. :) The strawberry shortcake was delicious and had a lighter frosting than the others. The Hostess was good, but didn't really taste like a Hostess cupcake. I suppose that could be a positive!

They did taste like scratch cupcakes in that they were more dense than the box cupcakes we usually make at home that are very fluffy and airy. The edges were a bit crispy which my husband thought was great. Smaller than a Crumbs cupcake, but when you are eating 4 between 2 people, I guess that is good.

The man working there (owner? I am not sure) even walked me to the car because I was juggling my toddler and the box of cupcakes.

Great customer service and we will try some other flavors next time we are in the area.

Kaffir lime leaves?

I'm positive they were Kaffir Lime Leaves. I was stockpiling them in my freezer for a while and would go all over to find them. I laughed when I saw them because they were close to home and I was driving to Chinatown and Kam Man to find them. I never even thought to look there. The package was labeled Kaffir Lime Leaves as well.

Kaffir lime leaves?

I saw them in Andover Whole Foods in April with the fresh clamshell-packed herbs in the produce section. Haven't looked lately.

Market for Thai ingredients?

Saw some with the fresh clamshell-packed herbs last week at Whole Foods in Andover. Might be worth a call to see if the Boston-area Whole Foods have them.

ISO ice cream cake Boston, MA to Nashua, NH

There was a Carvel store on 28 in Salem, NH and, as far as I know, it hasn't closed. I like Mad Maggie's cakes in North Andover as well. They do custom orders with a few days' notice.

How was the food truck scene at sowa this sunday?

We went, but only stayed a little bit because of the heat. My husband and I got 1 Speed's dog to split. It was our first time and it was great (all toppings except onions - mmm)! We had to wait in a short line, maybe about 5 people ahead of us. I would say it took about 5 minutes to get the dog, which was fine with us. In the meantime, I walked over to the Clover food truck to get a drink. They were doing a brisk business, but it was a little chaotic because most people didn't know how to order or where to wait. There were 3 people taking orders on iPhones and then you'd wait over on the side for them to call your name. We got there about 2 o'clock and many of the drinks were out of stock, but most of the food was still available.
I didn't see anyone at the Fillbelly's truck the whole time we were there. There was a frozen treat truck and a cupcake one too that I forgot the name of. There were some others, but we knew what we wanted so we stuck to those and didn't explore too much. We grabbed 2 pickle spears for a dollar on our way out from Grillo's. I think I would have eaten more if it wasn't so hot, but we had our baby with us and we didn't want to stick around too long.

FLAGEL - flattened bagel - Where can I get them retail or wholesale?

I buy them at Bagel Boss when I go home to LI. They will ship Flagels and Bagels by the dozen, but it's UPS Next Day and pretty expensive. For example, it's 36 dollars for 2 dozen Flagels and 39 dollars more to ship it. Ouch! I guess if you order enough, maybe it becomes worth it. They do supply lots of bakeries and local businesses, so maybe they'll make a deal with you, although I don't know if any of their customers are this far away.

The Bagel Boss flagels, while thinner, seem to have the same amount of bread to them, just more spread out. They really do seem like a regular bagel that got run over. I like them because there is a higher crust to inner dough ratio.

Loretta - new find in Newburyport, MA

The chef is from Raspberries in Andover that broke my heart when it closed. We've only visited Loretta once, but it was just as good as all the Raspberries food I miss.

Best Coffee in Boston

The cups were small, maybe a bit bigger than the cups you'd serve espresso in (2-3 ounce cup size?). Overall, we drank probably the equivalent of a large coffee, maybe a bit more. I've been on decaf for a while, so I really felt the caffeine. It was worth it though.

Best Coffee in Boston

A friend and I went to Velouria just to try the Clover machine. We did the sampler, which gave us 5 small cups of 5 different brews for about 9 dollars (designed for 2 people). As we finished each one, we went to the counter and got our next cup. We drank the coffee black with no sugar and it was an interesting experience. The coffee alone was great and much smoother and less bitter than others I've had. I usually drink my coffee with milk and sugar so this was new territory for me. We tried adding milk and sugar to test it out and the coffee lost something. It tasted sort of ordinary and really tasted better without the additions. We went on a Saturday afternoon and sat for a few hours. The owner (?) recommended La Pupusa Guanaca across the street when we asked for lunch ideas. Great stuff, but that's for another thread!

Cassis in Andover

Don't get me wrong - the food is still way better than most places in the area. To me it seemed that they were trying to make it a bit fancier than before and please more people. For example, they offer 2 soups for appetizers now, whereas before it was usually just 1. I liked that the menus were somewhat seasonal; I hope that they keep that aspect.

I think that the restaurant changed hands at the end of last summer.

Cassis in Andover

Went to Cassis and noticed that the restaurant had new owners. They offer a Prix Fixe two nights a week and slightly different entrees than the former owners. We have been going to Cassis for years and hadn't gone for a while. The food was still good, but different somehow. I didn't get that same "country French bistro" feeling that the restaurant had before.

Anyone know if the former chef went somewhere else? Has anyone else had any experiences there recently?

Thanks!
