Good Wings in Durham Region?

After having lived here for 28 years, I've sampled pretty much every wing in the area. After my exhaustive search, I settled on:

Buffalo Style Wings
800 King Street West
Oshawa, ON L1J 2L5
(905) 571-9464

.....in Oshawa as being the best, and haven't looked back in 10 or so years. They continue to float my proverbial wing boat. Awesome wings.

Wink in Cans!!!

I'm sure it's far too far out of your way, but all locations in Oshawa / Whitby stock it. It's my favourite beverage (non-alcoholic, of course :) )

Susur's new NYC place - reviewed in NY Magazine

I agree. What Susur does well is promote. People are always talking about him, whether good or bad. He's always on people's minds. Some want to eat at his restaurants because they love his cuisine and the dining experience he tries to create, while others are curious and motivated by these raves and make a reservation to try it for themselves and end up be disappointed. He is very inconsistent. Some services are spot-on and the flavours are bright and vibrant, while others are a shit-show with retarded staff and food without any vibrancy. More specifically, some DISHES are phenomenal, while even more dishes are mediocre at best. The whole experience is like playing the lottery. He can't cut it in New York. He doesn't have the chops. It's as simple as that. But contending this reality are all the fanboys and fangirls that have won the Susur lottery when they've dined there and ended up with a positive experince , and it's causing a buzz. Again, people are talking about Shang, and people are making reservations. How long it'll last... my guess is not very long. New Yorkers don't have patience when it comes to their restaurant scene.

President's Choice square pizzas

Sobeys Compliments' brand makes a great frozen pizza, in my opinion. It's the only one I actually enjoy eating. It's a thin-crust "Tuscan" pizza with prosciutto, capicollo, asiago and mozzarella cheeses, and it's very tasty. Worth seeking out if you're looking for great FROZEN pizza.

Sushi Kaji -- Review

Thanks for the review!

Sushi Kaji is my favourite Toronto restaurant, bar none. As erly mentioned, it's a complete experience, and while like every restaurant I'm sure they have slip-ups, but I've been lucky enough to experience 100% perfection on each of my 7 visits. And isn't Kaji a hoot?

The Water Shoppe [moved from Ontario]

http://www.thewatershoppe.com/

Alright, I understand it's "only water". And I can clearly appreciate the "why would you pay X-dollars for water?" stance. However, that doesn't stop me from being an absolute water whore, and this designer water store is my whore house, baby.

Do you have a favourite "designer" water? Still? Sparkling? Can you taste differences, or do you just like the gorgeous packaging (I admit to both)?

My favourites are:

Still Water -- FIJI, Evian, VOSS, Wattwiller and Iskilde
Sparkling -- Gerolsteiner, Bru, Iskilde, Bedoit and Ferrarelle

It's expensive, yes. It's also essential to life. Not the expensive stuff, of course. Ah crap.. I have no idea where I'm going with this. I drink it because I love it.

Best Fine Dining Options - updated list?

As usual, I agree with Charles 1000.817%

My meals at Spendido have been comparable to Gramercy Tavern, Blue Hill, Momofuku Ssam, Irvine Mills, and Esca. In speaking in terms of the overall impression they left me with, the number of high points reached, the (very few) number of lows experienced, service, price, and quality of ingredients. Spendido, in my opinion, also thrives on consistency, which is an enormous factor in the world of fine dining. Have an awesome meal!

And while I have your attention, you really need to post BIGGER photos. They're always so mouth-watering, but sooooo tiny. Many times you can't even make out ingredients, and it's a crying shame.

Cheers mate!

Joanne Kates meets Caplansky's smoked meat

I can't stand her either -- she irritates the piss outta me. She always finds a way to make her reviews 90% about herself, and 10% about the restaurant. Her literary arrogance seeps down my monitor each time I suffer through reading one of her online reviews.

MOISHE'S DILLS

To each their own, I suppose. I like Moishe's because it has a nice hit of garlic, and a bit less acidity as compared to a Strub's. Don't get me wrong though, I still love my Strub's. After being on a steady diet of them for 28 years, they certainly were delicious. I just think Moishe's is a step up. Or maybe just different. Whatever the case, they're my favourite mass-market pickle.

Homemade pickles of all sorts, though, are usually infinitely tastier in my experience. We have a polish pantry near me where they've got wooden barrels of various types of pickles and you just reach in and grab your share. Absolutely incredible. Far and away the best pickles I've ever eaten, period.

MOISHE'S DILLS

I should also add that my local Loblaws also used to carry the brand, but have stopped. Yet another reason my hatred for Loblaws has grown so rapidly in the past year or so. Soul-less bastards.

I recommend the Steak Tartare and Onion and Ale Soup as starters, and enjoyed their Steak Frites and Grilled Berkshire Pork Chop as far as mains are concerned.

LOBLAWS Deathwish

I had the same question! They are just finishing renovations on my local store (Oshawa), and they've seemingly gone all self-serve. Not completely, though. They still scan the items, but you have to bag them yourself at each and every checkout.

Ridiculous. How are they going to get around the issue of some people have physical/health impairments? Idiots.

Looking for a good Spaghetti Vongole

I had a very good version of the dish at True Restaurant about a month ago. I think it meets your criteria. What I found delicious (and somewhat unusual) was that the dish seemed very light, and fresh. It's difficult for a pasta dish to give me that sense, but it was certainly a welcomed novelty. Under $20.

new to ajax/durham - Seafood/butcher/groceries

Thickson -- but there are 2 on Thickson. One of them sits King / Thickson (directly across from what used to be the Whitby Mall and is now home to a Sobey's, etc.) and the NEW one is on Thickson North. Just past Taunton. Just before Algoma Apple Orchards.

I can confirm that as of this weekend, Algoma does indeed have Northern Spy apples. If you make the journey to Whitby, don't leave without buying some of their homemade fudge, pecan tarts, or candy apples. Cider too, don't forget the cider!

What's the difference between a "Chowhound" and a "Foodie" ??

I think that the term refers to people willing to go out of their way to sniff out good Chow. So although surely all Chowhounds are foodies, all foodies are not Chowhounds.

Buckingham's is great. They're a quality [family] operation that has been around for decades. They've got two locations; one in Oshawa, and one just outside of Oshawa (Brooklin) that opened just recently. The focus is mainly on land-dwelling protein, but they offer a minimal selection of fresh fish/shellfish too. Best of all, they're more than happy to do anything trimming/boning/butchering to your order.

Give them a shot, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Re: Halenda's: very pedestrian. Certainly not worthy of any special trip. I find them comparable to M&M Meats. They do make lovely cabbage rolls, though.
