I'd veer far away from Tom Bergin's. Their fish and chips tasted like Sysco and even their Guiness tasted bitter, like the taps hadn't been cleaned in ages.
If that's what they consider "old-school", they can keep it.

Southern CA lack of Baja-quality Mexican - a philosophical question
I would counter that by suggesting Ricky at Ricky's Fish Tacos over in the Sunset Junction for Ensenada style tacos.
He's only open on the weekends and has a small cart for now, but they're the best I've ever had.
