4 days at Inner Harbour

There's acceptable but not spectacular Thai in nearby Federal Hill. Thai Arrroy is the popular spot, but I prefer the weird but arguably better Thai Yum across the street. It's been a while since I've been to B&O, but I always liked it quite a bit. Bluegrass, also in Federal Hill, is another good spot. Salt really didn't thrill me, and Fogo de Chao is a chain.

Jasa Kabob in Canton?

I've tried this place for delivery a couple of times since moving to East Baltimore. This is a really Chow-worthy place. I've tried the lamb and chicken kabobs and the lamb gyros. While the gyros is unlikely to please fans of the traditional preparation, it's still a worthy sandwich in its own right. The kabobs were excellent, the lamb grilled to a perfect medium rare and the chicken breast almost but not quite overlooked. Jasa Kabob is a definite winner, and as a bonus for east Baltimore residents, they deliver. Highly approved.

Food Lover's Guide to Baltimore

Thanks for that. It's good to have a trusted opinion on this apparently overhyped restaurant.

JFX 2012

This morning's take was pretty slim. Despite our somewhat early spring, not much in the way of produce was available. Salsa guy has gone back to the original recipe for the black bean and roasted corn salsa, which is great news -- I picked up a container of it and the tomato based garden salsa. Got some chicken thighs from KCC and some pork chops from Truck Patch. I also got morels and ramps from mushroom lady at an exorbitant price, but hey it's once a year.

"A man's drink of choice , tells volumes of one's character"-- need help..

I read it as Kangaroo being a stupid name for a stupid drink.

Movie / drink connections

The Big Sleep -- rye from a hip flask.

The Thin Man -- about 40 martinis

Need Current Info re: Best Crabcake

That's just offensive.

Your all time favorite 'TV' cooking show chefs?

I love Julia's recipes, but my only experience with her on TV has been via Dan ackroyd. The only TV chef who motivated me to Google his recipes right away was Rick Bayless.

Maryland Style Fried Chicken???

That is how my grandmother, who made the best fried chicken ever tasted on earth did it.

Simple things you can't get right

There's a difference between "don't imbibe" as the poster said and "having issues." Also, that's a ridiculous analogy.

Maryland Style Fried Chicken???

That sounds like the recipes I've seen in old eastern shore church cookbooks, except what is a Bacon roll?

Birthday Cake: Wegman's or Costco?

Wegmans is very close to my workplace, and I and others make that our main stop when celebrating co-workers birthdays. Everyone has always been really pleased with them, and they don't seem over-sweet. Highly recommended

Chicken Fried Steak

I had two on my trip. One was a classic version at The Red Onion in Madill. The second was an upscale version with jalepeno gravy at Cheevers in OKC. Both were great.

Simple things you can't get right

You are correct. I missed that. So yeah, what Mr Taster said

something worth eating in Olney/Columbia?

+ 1 for Sushi King. The've been consistently excellent for years now. I'm a huge fan.

So what should we call a Non-Martini

Actually, I think this is a battle that's just been lost. Most people don't even know what a cocktail glass is until I explain that I'm referring to a martini glass.

Breakfast/brunch/lunch between Baltimore and DC

Eggspectations in Columbia, just off the rt 100 exit is a good choice. They can get crowded however.

The Big Waste....waste of time.

One of the other issues too is that the supply is broken up at the end. For example, let's say I'm a distributer with 1000 cases of tomatoes, 10% of which will end up as waste. The problem is that I sell my tomatoes to 100 groceries and restaurants, each of which takes 10 cases. Each of those in turn has one case in waste. You can't just undo the distribution chain to have 100 cases to repurpose.

The actual reality is far messier than my example. Once the tomatoes are at retail level its pretty much the end of the road.

Casino Royale cocktail question

I'd say yes. The idea is to blend the gin and vermouth with some of the melted ice, which brings the flavors together. By using cold gin, you're not going to allow that dilution to happen. Place all the ingredients. Including the ice, into a shaker. Stir with a bar spoon (a table knife is an acceptable substitute) for 60 seconds. Strain into a cocktail glass, garnish and serve.

It is acceptable to keep your glasses in the freezer though.

Here's a graphic depiction of the differences between shaken and stirred drinks.

Casino Royale cocktail question

Actually, stirring dilutes it too. It's an essential part of the drink.

Casino Royale cocktail question

I think a martini should be made with gin. Since vodka is so neutral it ends up being vermouth flavored vodka.

Still, people can drink what they like. More troubling is the shaking. In general, a drink made entirely of spirits should be stirred. Shaking ruins the clarity leaving a cloudy drink that can even contain ice shards

Boodles is one of my favorites. I haven't tried Seagrams.

Indeed.

3 D's Title & on almost every night this week

I think Chopped would be much improved is they'd bring Carson Kessler in to critique the contestant's outfits.

I think there are people, like JMF or Evergreen Dan, who deserve far more respect than I do for the craftsmanship of their cocktails People like me are basically fussy as s means of justifying how much we drink.

"Also good glass ware. Try second hand shops for great retro glasses. New is not always cool, ask the parents and grandparents."

There is something singilarly elegant about having a martini or Manhattan from a coupe rather than a cocktail glass. It's as close as I will come to being as suave as William Powell

Casino Royale cocktail question

My interest in what James Bond drinks died when I realized he was a fan of shaken vodka martinis. Ugh. The man was a heathen.

I seriously dislike Tanqueray. It's horrible stuff. For the price I'd go for Plymouth every time. That said, and thanks to the posters on this board who are wise enough to not equate price with quality, Gordons has become my everyday gin. It's quite good and incredibly cheap.

Here's one thing I really like about Guy. I assume that hes not allowed to go "eww, this is shit!" But you can tell when he really likes something because he'll keep chomping on it rather than doing the obligatory tv personality taste.
