Fancy / Specialty liquor shops In NY? Hi fellow chowhounders, I need your help please. I'm visiting from London soon and was wondering if there are any high end or specialty liquor stores in NY? I need a place that would sell stuff only found in the US if possible...like good rums, artisan bourbons, that kind of thing. Thanks!! |

I went in their first week of opening, and the beef heart anticuchos were so damn good i ordered them twice in a row..and the dipping sauce was wayyyy better than the mayonnaisy one that they do now..it was a great aji amarillo spicy garlicky loveliness but the mayonaise based one is so bland in comparison....im glad that Im not the only one that found them a bit too pricey?? |

US Girl Scout cookies in London?? yeah i think I got a recipe off chowhound a while ago, but its just not the same!! haha, my bratty requests...thanks for the help though! |

US Girl Scout cookies in London?? So this is a slightly ridiculous request, but does anyone know where I can get hold of US Girl Scout cookies (ie Thin Mints, Samoas, etc) in London or the UK? Grew up around them as a kid and have been having nostalgic pangs for them for years now...oh the frivolity...! Thanks Chowhounders |

Cheap places to eat in London. the London Eye is on the Southbank, by Waterloo Station...you'll be able to get around central london really easily from where you are...and you'll be close to Borough Market too |
|

Tarte au chocolat in central London---anyone know a decent place? I'd avoid any of the chain 'french' bakeries such as Paul's, Pat Val, LPQ....not made in house, not fresh, not nice... |

Cheap places to eat in London. Soho is a good place to hit up, its very central and there's loads of options from bakeries, to cafes to some of the best restaurants in London that do good prix fixe deals. You should find previous threads on cheap places to eat in Soho. I'd suggest sticking around Frith St, Old Compton St, Wardour St and Berwick St. Good luck! |

Tarte au chocolat in central London---anyone know a decent place? Konditor and Cook used to do a gorgeous one with raspberries...not sure sure if they still do though, worth checking out.. |

I've never heard of that but it sounds damn good...is it anything like lardy bread?? |
|
|
this is absolutely no help at all, but when i was a student at the National Bakery School, we made proper stotties as taught to us by a teacher from 'up north'...haven't seen one since, which is a shame because while theres a glut of 'french' bread bakeries like Pauls and LPQ, there doesn't seem to be anyone in London doing regional British breads, which are as good as (if not better) than all the mediocre french crap we have right now...sorry, rant over now |

Meat Liquor - why do you guys think??? [London] Glad to know it wasnt just me! it wasnt overseasoned as in too spicy, the burger itself was just super salty, so much so that it killed the taste of everything else in it?? Maybe its just teething problems...the fried pickles were pretty addictive though |

Meat Liquor - why do you guys think??? [London] Went and had the famous Dead Hippie burger from the new Meat Liquor joint on Welback St...I hate to say it, but it seriously wasnt that great, the burger was wayyyy overseasoned. Personally find the house burger (the one that used to be secret) at Spuntino's to be much better, didnt need any sauce or anything on it. Am I the only disillusioned one?? |

London Pastry Chef Visiting, need your input! Hey Mig, this may be a really stupid question, but is there a 'better' location of Milkbar to go to, or are they all pretty much the same? |

London Pastry Chef Visiting, need your input! thanks for the rec, its so damn hard to find babka in london!! I'm def gonna try head to williamsburg for this one |
|
|
London Pastry Chef Visiting, need your input! thanks miss needle, i agree with you that going to milkbar would be wicked for a reasearch point of view, because in London most of the bakeries are obviously more european and french slant...there are some 'american' bakeries but they're more like cupcake places made by people that dont know what cupcakes are and that don't realise there's more to american baking culture than cupcakes. thanks for the recs! |
|
|
London Pastry Chef Visiting, need your input! thanks vegivore!! Just checked out the website for smorgasburg and i thankfully get in 2 days before the last event, so i think i might just be able to make it...the vendors look prety interesting so thanks again for the heads up. |

Where do chefs buy cookware in NY? Thanks rifkind81, do you have any idea if Win Restaurant Supply sells small goods too? Looking for pastry stuff mostly... |
|

London Pastry Chef Visiting, need your input! Thanks for the suggestions morisaur and saria. The columbian bakery sounds really interesting, and there isnt much of a south american food anything in London (yet). I would aboslutely love to go to wd-50 but i think i might have to stick to less 'fancy' places this time round unfortunately! all the 'americana' bakeries sound great though. I forgot to ask, do places like Baked and the like do any savoury stuff too? LIke their biscuits? Or is it just layer cakes, pies etc? actually ignore that, just stupidly realised i can check their menu on their website...oops! |

Where do chefs buy cookware in NY? Thanks for the suggestion meatme, JB prince looks pretty good. Bebevonbernstein, thanks for your suggestion as well...I actually DONT want anything fancy and pretty, I need the kinda stuff used in 'real' restaurants, as I'm a chef in London and thanks to a great exchange rate in favour of my British pound, i would like to come stock up on stuff for work while on a visit to NY! I'll check out the Bridge to, thanks again |
