The BEST Red Velvet cake in NYC

Absolutely the best cakes in Manhattan - red velvet is amazing - moist, dense. Cupcakes ($2.50) are fantastic. The secret is apparently the Columbian baker puts dulce de leche in everything. The slightly pinkish rather than red comes from beet, the natural and original kind of coloring, so they're not FDA day-glo red etc. I hear it's Kate Winslet's favorite place. Most other decent/lauded ones I've tried - Amy's, Billy's, Citycakes even Lulu - don't quite match up to this. They're dry and crumbly in comparison. (Oh yes, forget Magnolia - it's only riding on its name - a shame - they use to be good - their cupcakes are outrageously small and outrageously priced at $3.50). The only other standout red velvet cake to my palate is that famous one in Brooklyn (what's it called?) where the cakes are around $50! Try Big Booty's yuca rolls too!

New chocolate shop in Chelsea

It's called Cocoa V. It's a new concept - set up like a restaurant with intimate dining tables, menu etc except the only thing on offer is chocolate. I recall there was a daily prix fixe for $13 - five different chocolate creations. Now there's a nice idea for the recession - eat a full dinner at home, and go out to Cocoa V for dessert. It fills that gap because La Bergamote (best financiers and danish EVER) and Three Tarts (which I reviewed here on my personal soapbox http://cheapnchoosy.blogspot.com/2009/01/60cents-5-microdesserts-three-tarts-ny.html) both close at 8pm.
The staff seem a bit formal and stiff, nothing like the incredibly relaxed and smiley Peter Wojtkunski and owner Marla at the 'Tarts.
But the place is new, you gotta give people a chance.
The cheapest offering is three edamame clusters with lime and salt - pretty good - for $2. Their vegan shtick is really another way of saying it's a 100% dark chocolate joint, because pure dark chocolate never has any dairy in it.

help...anyone know a fairly quiet restaurant in chelsea?

La Lunchonette cnr 10th and 18th(?) - great food, not super cheap, but cheaper than others doing French provincial, they do a GREAT roast chicken and beet salad... low key unpretentious decor. Hmmm. In fact, I might just have to go there right now :o)

Yep, great food, noisy as hell at Halloween...

Omai? Nice food, noisy as hell! I guess it depends on the time. I recommend going to any restaurant at around 6.30 to get the best service and quiet. Before the kitchen turns crazy. I worked in a kitchen. You don't wanna eat at a place that's full - out back things get thrown around and well...

Where to find dark meat turkey on Thanksgiving?

I agree - I dislike turkey breast almost as much as I dislike chicken breast. Too much solid white - and often dry - protein. Ugh. You need a good balance of fat and protein in your diet and the trick is "everything in moderation" - including moderation :o) . I think a hotel buffet is more likely to have this option rather than a standard restaurant that plates up a few artfully arranged turkey breast slices. I'm going to research hotels. Just avoid the menus that say "breast of turkey"
