Plenty to discuss here. Monty's Blue plate isn't a "greasy spoon"; the Best Italian results are baffling; and I'm not sure in what universe the Nau-Ti-Gal beats Sardine in a head-to-head contest. But it's a handy list and should certainly provide plenty of Chow Chat :-)
Campari (and relatives) anyone?
In the 1970s, I spent many happy summers in Spain sipping Americanos: build over ice 1 part Campari, 1 part sweet vermouth, 1-2 dashes Angostura bitters, top with club soda or seltzer, garish with orange or lime. (I'm not sure if the bitters were used in Spain; but I use them for this drink at home.) Campari and sodas always taste a bit flat to me; the Americano seems to have a bit more depth -- but of course as in all things, a matter of personal taste.
Where can I find some wonderful tumblers/whiskey sour glasses?
Have you looked at Crate and Barrel? I like their glassware a lot, and they have items in a range of prices. Some of my faves are very reasonably priced.
cocktails you've invented that worked or didn't
We seem to have invented a Brandy Negroni tonight (dh would like to dub this a Randy Roni, but I demurred). We were out of gin and I didn't like the first attempt with vodka. Since I went to college in Wisconsin, home of the brandy Old Fashioned: 1-1-1 brandy-campari-sweet vermouth, with Angostura bitters and burnt orange to garnish. The result was bitter as all get out, and not too bad :-)
Suggestions for B & B replacement?
I like a Leonardo, basically equal parts brandy and sweet vermouth, half as much Benedictine, lemon, and bitters. It's a bit sweet, but that's how I roll :-)
