Secret Menu Items
Does anyone know of secret "off-menu" items at Montreal restaurants? I've heard of meatballs at Westmount Taverne and a secret wine list at l'Express....
Thanks!
Le Boucan
I ate there last week and I really enjoyed it. The chicken nachos were delicious, and the salsa had a nice smokey flavour. A great sharing snack. My friend and I shared the pit bull platter so we could try everything. I LOVED the ribs. They fell off the bone, but also had some crisp to the outside. The BBQ sauce was nice and spicy and i ended up dipping my french fries in it, instead of kethcup. The pulled pork was also yummy, as was the chicken, although, I don't eat chicken skin so once I took it off, it was just nicely cooked chicken meat that I dipped in yummy sauce. The bacon brownie was fun, but more of a novelty item. I didn't think "OMG, this is what brownies have been missing all these years! Bacon!" but they were good. The pie in a glass was ok, but I like my pie in a pie.
I really recommend trying Le Boucan if you're a carnivore...though, I saw someone order the chef salad and it looked good. And I would be into trying the salmon.
Paris - No Reservations
How about anglo-Quebecois french? Everyone here speaks english right back to me! I keep trying, though!
Paris - No Reservations
What a terrific list, John (et Souphie?)! Am currently googling with a watering mouth. I love trying new places!
Paris - No Reservations
Hi Maximilien! It's so hard to compare, because restaurants here are so varied, plentiful, and $$$! But I am generally in LOVE with Liverpool House, l'Orignal, Westmount Taverne, le Chien Fumant, Pullman, Les Enfants Terribles, etc. Would have totally quoted Joe Beef, Au Pied de Cochon, XO, and DNA if they were more within my budget. Sigh. A millionaire's tastebuds on a writer's budget :(
Paris - No Reservations
Merci! We're going to be wandering that area tomorrow, so it might work perfectly. I just hope they don't judge me for my Quebecois french!
Paris - No Reservations
Bonjour!
Foodie from Montreal, here. I was a bit blonde and did not make reservations anywhere in Paris, this week. Do you have any ideas for medium-budget restos that do not require reservations?
Merci!
Oyster Season!
I agree! You'll have a great meal and a great time at both of these restaurants. You can also go to McKiernan's, which is the third restaurant in the Joe Beef trinity, and they'll serve you up the same oysters plus a cheaper menu. At l'Orignal you'll learn all about the different oysters in addition to eating them, which is a great plus!
Changing menu & whole crispy fried duck?

PUB BURGUNDY LION
I live in the neighbourhood and want very badly to support my local businesses, and I'm really happy to have a pub near me. The burgers are pretty good. But that's about the end of the positive things I have to say about BL. I really find the food to be heavy and greasy. I'm not much of a beer drinker, so I find the wine list to be pretty lame. They refer to themselves as a "gastro-pub" but the menu is actually pretty straighforward pub fare. I'd love to see them go a little more gastro and include some lighter options. I really think they need to re-think their food, and I hope they do. It's a shame to waste such a great space and concept.
Indian in Montreal.
I live right near there, so I eat there fairly often. I really like it. It's never very crowded, so the staff take good care of you, and the food is always good. It's a solid place to go, and not too far from the AMC, so it's nice before a movie (and then you can walk up the hill and burn off your butter chicken). But it's probably not the most exciting or innovative Indian food in Montreal, so if that's what you want, the Chowhounders probably know their business. But I think it's worthy.
Expensive Tastes, Cheap Eats
Hi everyone,
Every now and then someone mentions in a thread a high-end restaurant that offers a mid-day or Sunday table d'hote that meets all budgets. I always say to myself, "Jensie, you should write that down." And then I do not. And I remember to myself, Milos has a 3-course meal for $21...is that every day? Only Sundays? I'd hate to walk in and be there on the wrong day and have to walk out with my head bowed in shame. "Um, sorry, I just remembered I'm allergic to both tzatziki and calamari. Gotta go!"
I was thinking it might be nice to consolidate the list for reference.
Thanks for your input!

Saturday night downtown for 3 young ladies
Plenty of boys looking to buy girls drinks at Vauvert, but dress skimpy because it is hot in there. I'd do Garde Manger (late seating) if you want to get up on your table and dance after eating. Grange is really nice, too, but seems quieter. You'd actually probably walk to Vauvert or Garde Manger after dinner at Grange.
Cool restaurant for Upscale Bachelorette
Thanks, these look fantastic. I only wish we had a few more days in LA!
A quick amendment...we are particularly interested in open air eateries...coming from cold, cold Canada, we're longing for a warm breeze. We are coming in March.
Cool restaurant for Upscale Bachelorette
Oh Wow! I would go bananas in this place. I've sent the link to the other girls to see. It might be a bit OTT for some of the others...we'll see!
Cool restaurant for Upscale Bachelorette
Hello LA Chowhounds!
I'm coming in from Montreal with some girlfriends for a friend's bachelorette party (we'll be about 6 people). We're all in our early to mid-thirties, so we're looking for more of a chill vibe, unique cocktails, interesting food, and a hip (but not too trendy) crowd. We're hoping to get dressed up and have a few laughs over martinis and a delicious dinner, and maybe be close to somewhere to go dancing, after.
Thanks for your ideas!
Veggie Burger in downtown
I believe Mr. Steer has a veggie burger, but I have never tried it. I love their meaty burgers too much. The Curly Q fries are great.
Birthday dinner recommendations
Hello!
I'm looking for some recommendations for my birthday dinner with my family. I usually take the opportunity to go somewhere I've never been before. In the past, we have been to Joe Beef and Chez l'Epicier.
There are just a couple of caveats. Although I love the food at Joe Beef, my parents find it to be too loud. So I would like to choose somewhere a little more quiet. And while I enjoy food that is inspired, my mother has a very plain palate and could basically be happy with plain chicken or salmon. So we need to go somewhere that has a range of options. She found Chez l'Epicier to to be very over the top.
Any ideas?
Thank you!

Looking for Breakfast
I love the "Parisien" breakfast at Toi, Moi et Cafe on Notre dame. Soft boiled eggs with toast fingers to dip in. Mmmmm.
New pub on Notre Dame
Does anyone know anything about the new place opening on Notre Dame across from Liverpool House, next to the Corona, where Del Canale used to be? I drove by it this AM, but can't remember the name, off the top of my head.
Pie
Thank you! I think it's time for someone to open a homemade pie shop in Montreal.
Pie
Rockaberry seems to be the staple. But are there any better places that specialize in pie in Montreal?
First Time in Hong Kong
My friend and I will be in Hong Kong for 4 days, from April 4 - 8. We will be staying at the YMCA Salisbury in Kowloon.
What are some "do not miss" eating experiences, within a moderate budget. Cheaper is better, but we are willing to splurge a little for something really wonderful.
Thanks!
Salmon Tartare
Everyone I was with was happy with their food. I just had the tartare, and it was quite good. Not my favourite, but okay.
Salmon Tartare
I am a big fan of the Tartare at Holder (and their fries are great too!). Wilson's is also very good. I didn't enjoy the tartare at Lemeac so much, because I don't particularly love truffle oil.
Casual Restaurant / lounge for birthday
Hi all,
It's a friend's birthdat and I'm looking for some good suggestions for a relaxed restaurant with good, moderately expensive food where we can linger. Some friends might come by for just a drink and no food, so we would need a place where that is tolerated. Any ideas?
