Trip Report from New Years

Hello! I just wanted to let everyone know how my trip went over New Years since I received so much feedback and ideas from this board.

Our first meal of the trip was at Restaurant August on Thursday. We had the three course lunch special for about $20 per person. I had the potato gnocchi with blue crab and truffles, lentils with big bacon chunks, and a fried cheese dessert. My boyfriend had the shrimp bisque, lemonfish with risotto, and chocolate fritters. We had a half of bottle of white wine, but while it was chilling, they took it away with only a little left. When I said something, they said there was only a little bit left but I was still a little upset! But, they brought me crepes for dessert instead of what I ordered, so I got to try both. So that made up for the wine debacle.

For dinner we luckily got seats at the bar at Mr. B's. Like everyone recommended, we ordered fried oysters with hollaindaise sauce, gumbo ya-ya, and the BBQ Shrimp. Everything was delicious and very filling, plus it was a good value for how much food we got. For a late night snack we waited in line at Cafe du Monde, I enjoyed the coffee the most. We had two Pimms Cups at the Napoleon House and really liked the drink. We also went and got Sazeracs at the Sazerac Bar in the Roosevelt Hotel. We didn't enjoy the drinks too much but the bar and hotel lobby were beautiful.

On Friday we went to Galatoire's for Friday Lunch. We did not have to wait and the dining room was not very crazy. One of the bussers said it was the quietest Friday he had seen in 18 months! We ate Oysters Rockafeller, fried eggplant, split an artichoke/lemon/trout entree, and had the banana bread pudding for dessert. We meant to get the souffle potato but I guess I only said the first part of the item, which was the fried eggplant. Everything was very tasty and I loved the classic atmosphere. I was disappointed to see a lot of Gator fans dressed in jeans and Gator t-shirts though.

For a snack we went to Luke for 25 cent oysters and half priced drinks! The oysters were huge and very different then the oysters I have had in Boston but very good. And you can't beat that price! After Luke we went to the Carousel Bar and had The Goody and the Vieux Carre. We loved the drinks, the bartenders, and the revolving bar! For dinner we went to Acme Oyster House. We split 1/2 dozen chargrilled oysters and a shrimp and oyster po-boy (Piecemaker). Both items were absolutely delicious!

Saturday, our last day, we went to Commander's Palace for the Jazz Brunch. We sat in the Garden Room and loved the entire atmosphere. We had the oyster dome and turtle soup for appetizers, both had some kind of poached egg/biscuit entree, and the molten chocolate cake and bread pudding souffle for dessert. Like everyone said, the bread pudding souffle was amazing! (but everything else was very good). We had planned on eating at Cochon that night but we were just so full and tired that we got a Muffaletta at Central Grocery instead and ate it at the hotel. It was my first one and I did not realize it would be so huge!

Overall, everything was incredible and I would not replace one meal! I can't wait to come back and finish eating everywhere on my list!

When you say wear "jacket and tie" does that mean a formal suit (matching pants and jacket) or does that mean a sports coat. I know it's probably a dumb question but all my boyfriend has is a formal suit.

New Years Weekend Food Itinerary

No I definitely would not do both CP's for brunch and August for lunch in the same day! I think I will change the itinerary to August for lunch on Friday and then do the Jazz Brunch at CP. I guess I was just concerned about missing out on the lunch atmosphere and the cheap martinis!

Thanks for the advice on going Uptown- I haven't even started to plan for the nonfood parts of the weekend!

New Years Weekend Food Itinerary

Hello!

My boyfriend and I are going to be in New Orleans for three nights starting New Years Eve. I have been doing a lot of research on this board and have put together a rough eating itinerary. We recently went to NYC and basically did two days of eating based on all of the recommendations from Chowhound and it was amazing! Here is what I have so far:

THURSDAY (New Years Eve)

Breakfast: Cafe du Monde - beignets & cafe au lait
Lunch: Commanders Palace- turtle soup, reserve the garden room, cheap lunch (25 cent martinis), Bread pudding souffle
Dinner: Cochon ???

FRIDAY
Lunch: Galatoire’s- martini (bowl of olives), sit downstairs, dress nicely, fried eggplant and souffled potatoes appetizer oysters- en brochette, fried, dessert-café brulot, great coffee
Dinner: Acme Oysters (raw oysters, oyster po boy, char grilled oysters

SATURDAY
Lunch: Mr. B’s- bbq shrimp and cheap drinks (at lunch), go at lunch and sit at the bar, gumbo, gumbo ya ya, oysters- Deep fried with bacon horseradish hollandaise
Dinner: Coops- fried chicken, crawfish beignets???

SUNDAY
Early Breakfast

COCKTAILS!
Napoleon House- Pimms Cup
Carousel Bar- Vieux Carre Cocktail, The Goody, French 75
Sazarec Bar at the Roosevelt- drinks
Pat O’ Brians- hurricane

I also know that August has a really good lunch deal and I would love to eat there. But that means eating at Commander's Palace for brunch instead of lunch on Thursday. Is this a good idea? I would also have to eat at Mr. B's for dinner instead of lunch, but I guess that's OK except it's more expensive. Any advice/changes to the itinerary would be greatly appreciated!

We are also going to fit in Central Grocery, Luke (happy hour), and The Old Coffee Pot (maybe). Is it worth going to Brennan's for breakfast and bananas foster?
