We have a new banh mi shop opening in West Roxbury on Tuesday 5/29 (pending final inspection), Banh Mi Ngon at 1759 Centre St. It's located next to Christo's Pizza and on the same block as the recently opened Red-Eyed Pig BBQ and Los Amigos Burritos (the 4th new resto in WR in the last 6 months and 7th in the last year, including Just Baked, Lean Works, Sticky Rice Cafe and Porter Cafe). Van Tang and her husband Tu Vu are newcomers to the restaurant scene but are working with some friends who own Le's in Chestnut Hill. The menu (which I'll try to scan and post) is small but interesting, with most sandwiches in the $4 range, and some apps and drinks (Vietnamese coffee, smoothies).

Suggestions for High School Graduation dinner?
Agreed on the local suggestions, and would add Masona Grill for bistro food with a Peruvian influence (ceviche, lots of grilled meats), or West on Centre for standard American fare.

Great coverage of the opening - glad to see they are doing well. A follow-up: we made a large order before the holidays for a house party, and everyone was very impressed with the selection. I have been a pulled pork devotee, but I really liked the baby back ribs - they were fall-off-the bone. A note for larger orders - you can also request in advance to order the meats by the pint, as we did with the pulled pork. Everyone really liked the green chile & pork belly doughnuts - more like munchkins but doughy almost like a funnel cake. Hush puppies also had high marks, as well as the mac n' cheese sides. I'd had the beans and collared greens before and they have remained consistently good.

I'll second the Blue Ribbon comparison, too. I went again last night - the Hush Puppies with the orange maple bacon butter was excellent.
Also, in reply to the original question - there is no beer/wine/liquor license as they are a primarily take-out operation. There are a few barstools for eating in at a window counter.

Yes, they closed yesterday to get the shop in order after such a hectic opening few days. I believe they will reopen today.

Last I heard, Los Amigos was hoping for a pre-Christmas opening, but I am guessing it will be early January based on their current state of construction. Lean Works is looking at February (they are opening in the old Finagle spot on Spring St., near Panera, FYI).

Not a typical consideration, but you may also want to think about the Masona Grill in West Roxbury. There are two levels to the restaurant, with an upper bar and a lower dining room, and I believe the dining room holds around 2 or 3 dozen. It would be well within your price range, and I have always enjoyed their meals (Peruvian twists on typical bistro fare). They regularly accommodate such parties.
West on Centre in WR also has a couple of options for a large party, including a downstairs function room, and part of the main dining room can be closed off.

Has anyone tried the Red Eyed Pig in W. Roxbury?
I ordered the pulled pork platter with cornbread, collared greens and baked beans on Saturday. I chose the sweet sauce, but they have about five to offer ( FYI, I believe that the online menu is only available as an image on their Facebook page right now). Really good, and better than I had hoped. The beans, in particular, were large and had a nice sauce - not the "out of the can" variety. I also liked that the pulled pork wasn't as limp as you can sometimes find it. I was hoping for something at the level of Blue Ribbon which, for around the West Roxbury area (commuting to the Newtonville location0, is the best you can expect for take-out (have yet to try the newer sit-down BBQ places like Sweet Cheeks and that place in Winthrop). My first take is that this exceeds Blue Ribbon and thus, I am happy.
Also, I understand that they had something of a helter-skelter opening on Friday night, but most of the logistics were worked out by Saturday and they seemed to be humming along.
Have yet to try the other sides or appetizers, but plan on ordering some catering for a party this weekend. Looking forward to it.
Full disclosure, I sit on a neighborhood business board and helped them work through the licensing process, and have been tweeting etc. about their opening.

Both should be open by the end of the year; in fact, Red Eyed Pig is working to open near the end of November, if possible. FYI, the owners also operate the Blue Eyed Crab in Plymouth.
Also, we should be getting a fresh/healthy food restaurant, called Lean Works, in the old Finagle a Bagel space on Spring St. near Panera Bread after the first of the year. http://www.eatlean.com/
Porter Cafe in West Rox?
I am the tweeter referenced in the langley post above (full disclosure, I am on the board of the local main streets organization and have been helping to promote Porter's opening). In any case, I have nothing but great things to say about Porter. I was there last night for dinner with my wife, and had the pork chop - which was excellent with a cranberry mayonnaise on the side and was paired with asparagus and mashed potatoes. My wife really liked the chicken and apple salad, and we had the salt cod appetizer for the second time and were very happy with it. On a previous trip, I had the steak frites, which were very nice with a high quality cut of meat and cooked accurately to temperature. My companion on the earlier trip gave high marks to the burger. One of the early review articles on either boston.com/westroxbury or the West Roxbury Patch mentioned that the chef has worked at Coppa and a few other top local restaurants, and it is evident in the level of preparation and detail on the menu.
The beer list is impressive - I've had the Pretty Things EIP and the Harpoon 100 Barrel Rye IPA on tap, and had a Sixpoint Sweet Action in a can last night. Paul, one of the owners, tells me that they will be increasing the wine line up in response to customer demand.
In response to some of the questions about kids - I'd tend to agree with the sentiment that while people with kids are welcome anytime, they would be most comfortable on the earlier side of the evening. I have a 3- and a 1-year old, and might be hesitant to bring the younger one, but the menu is expansive enough to cover childrens' tastes.
Also, a dessert menu is forthcoming, as is a rear patio seating 30 or so people later this summer once permitting and some construction and neighborhood issues are hopefully resolved.

Dinner at The Hyde (http://www.thehyde02136.com), relatively new in Hyde Park (visited in Nov. '09, opened in Feb. '09, Globe review in June '09). The setting is an old diner, which is comfortable; somewhat reminiscent of the B-Side Lounge (but lighter) crossed with the Rosebud in Somerville. Very friendly and gracious staff, and the chef/owner Brian makes an effort to come out and speak to all the patrons. This is simple, since even on a Friday night there were only four or five tables full at one time, which is an absolute travesty considering the level of food. We had the grilled brie with fresh cranberry jelly and toast for starters, and a grilled statler chicken breast and pork chop for dinner. The chicken was very tender, served with gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans. The potatoes were homemade and coarse, and very tasty without the overpowering salt or butter taste that you sometimes get with mashed. The pork chop came with the same sides, and was sauteed in butter and chives and was outstanding. The flavor was noticeable and it was cooked perfectly. Other basic comfort food dishes were on the menu as well - reminded a bit of the Garden at the Cellar's menu without the rosemary truffle fries. We had a cinnamon bread pudding with vanilla ice cream for dessert, which was much lighter than it sounds. The beer menu is also notable, with several types (all bottles currently) from Dogfish Head, Avery, Arcadia and Blue Hill. The chef plans to construct a brewery in the basement to serve fresh brewed beer on tap; he formerly worked at Cambridge Brewing Co. As a West Roxbury resident, I am thrilled to have The Hyde nearby, and while I appreciate the ease of getting a table on a Friday, I hope they get the word out and stay open - the chance for a suburban microbrewery and food like this is too good to waste.
