Cape Cod breakfast recs.....Sagamore bridge to ~Dennis?? - moved from Boston board

What's not to like? The service, especially for large parties. We used to take about 12-16 people there for breakfast, all family, thinking we were creating a tradition. Did this for about 8 years and then noticed that after a while we'd be there for an hour or more, some of my brothers with their little kids, waiting for orders to come. My Cape-based sister-in-law even used to work there for functions and still the service was awful. Our last Dan Web adventure was in '07--a new low--90 minutes to serve eight people. That was it for me. Nice place, a menu which doesn't change very much, filled with tradition (heck, Thoreau stayed at the original Dan Web Inn), but a 90 minute wait for breakfast was too much to bear. We've now found two other, albeit less elegant places, to breakfast as a group in Mashpee off of Cotuit.

Shellfishing Cape Cod?

I've had a non-resident in license for Mashpee for the last 27 years. Not only can you clam in Mashpee waters, but also on the Falmouth side of Waquoit. Best of all, at no time during this period have I ever been prevented from harvesting in these waters due to red tide--which has such down shellfishing elsewhere on the Cape.

Ever eaten at Seafood Sams?

Not a timely response, but Cooke's is better than SFS's; better still, IMHO is Jerry's on Rte. 28 in Yarmouth (more old school fried seafood than Cooke's), but the quality of the clams, fries, and onion rings is superior to SFS's. Alas, Jerry is no longer with us, but the quality of his food continues.

7/09 Great Portuguese in New Bedford: Mimo's on Acushnet Ave.

Thank you for the review and new option in NB. After trying quite a few places years ago we just got into the habit of going to Antonio's, which I think is quite good. I am especially fond of their fried and grilled sardines. I don't suppose you happen to know if these make it on to the menu at Mimo's?

Betsy's Diner in Falmouth

Good find Claire! We've been going to Betsy's at least once for breakfast and once for dinner since about 1994 (during the month we spend on the Cape); our kids and their Cape cousins have made going to Betsy's something of a family tradition. Hard to park and long waits on the weekends and stay away completely during the Falmouth Road Race week in August. But other than the crowds, we've never had a bad experience there and it's difficult to beat the value given their prices. "Betsy's" was originally the "Peter Pan Diner" in Allentown, PA was moved to Falmouth, MA "only" in 1992. It's too bad there aren't more quality and value places like Betsy's on the Cape.

Best Fish Market on Lower Cape?

Joe's on the Canal in Sandwich is the best place in that area of the Cape and worth the drive. Their steamers, which tend to come from Barnstable Harbor are exquisite. If you can't catch it or harvest it yourself, Joe's is the next best thing.

Heather Restaurant Mashpee - No Heather?

My wife and I had a delightful meal at Heather's--excellent service and ambitious menu--back in the summer of '08 during our usual month-long stay on the Cape. After we finished we spent a while explaining to each other why this place wouldn't last. Not the best location and no signage on Rte. 28. Of course when we return this summer Heather's was gone. Thank goodness Bleu has managed to stay in business in the Marketplace area; whether Bleu or Contrast we've always enjoyed our meals there.
