Buddy's in Annapolis?
I unfortunately didn't read the posts on Buddy's before the local tourist office rec'd it when I asked for a good place for crab cakes and blue crab in Annapolis. The waitress was helpful and informative. I didn't have much time, so I passed on the blue crab and had the cakes. There was something interfering w/the scrumptious sweetness one expects to find in a Maryland crabcake. I commented on the wetness of the cake and the waitress told me that Buddy's doesn't use bread or cracker crumbs as a filler, but chopped black olives!!! It was a wet, but unctious flavor, one which I hope never crosses my lips again, especially at $16 per crab cake. Avoid Buddy's if you value your taste buds. Thank gawd I've had good Maryland crab cakes before or this SF chick would never eat them again if they were made at Buddy's.
Worst Holiday Meal in Wichita, KS
I've eaten at Newport Grill on two different holidays: Easter and Thanksgiving. Easter was the BEST buffet I've ever been to (and I HATE buffets). The food was from the restaurant's regular menu. It was beautiful and tasted great. So, with the kitchen being remodeled, we decided to return for Thanksgiving. Yuck.
Three in our party chose the turkey. I had the beef tenderloin. It was tender, but covered in a tomato-based sauce that had the consistency of something that comes out of an envelope. The cornbread stuffing was way too wet. The menu said it had sausage, but we couldn't find any and there was no sausage flavor. The yams were good. But each plate had the stuffing, potatoes, yams and carrots piled on top of each other - making the whole plate look unappetizing. No one food stood out. It was not a pretty plate. Dessert was worse. So little there, why bother? My husband said it was like the cook just phoned it in, or worse: picked the dinners up at Spear's and forgot the pie. Ouch.
The only high spot was our delightful wait person. She was memorable. Has anyone else had a similar experience at Newport Grill? One good thing came from this outing: Our kitchen will be done by the next holiday.
Where to eat in bodega bay?
I had some great clam chow-dah for a very reasonable price 2 weeks ago at Spud Point Cafe. Closed Wednesdays and after 5 p.m. other days. I did not like their crab cakes. Crab sandwiches were tasty but on white rolls (I like mine on dark pumpernickel). The crab taste really came through. This is a casual, eat-on-the-dock kinda place, not at all fancy.
Best restaurants in Vienna, Austria
Are the Viennese restaurants that smokey? My husband is allergic and can't be around it. We are considering a three-week vacation in Vienna, but the pro-smoking policy is stopping us. We hate to be relegated to outdoor cafes only. During our month-long vacation in Paris last year this was not a problem. We need to decide on this trip soon. He LOVES Viennese food. Any suggestions? Thanks.
I-70 Between KC and Denver?
Only open for dinner, but if your travels take you anywhere near Manhattan, it will SHOCK and AMAZE you that such cooking is happening in the Little Apple. No, this is not a great greasy spoon or small town cafe. It's fabulous big city dining w/o the 'tude. Check it out.

Kansas City Indian Grocery Store
Most of my Indian friends shop at Taj Grocers. They have good Indian veggies and fruits (the best mangoes in KC), fresh curry leaves, etc.and bulk spices There are two branches. I've only been to the one at 11830 Quivira Rd. The other branch is at 14856 Metcalf Ave., both in Overland Park.
The Quivira store has wonderful hot deli items that make for a great hors d'oeuvres snack.

Recommendations in/near Le Vésinet
Soup: Merci beaucoup. These suggestions will really help. My spouse is always on the hunt for the world's best croissant and this should keep him busy. Also good to know about the available produce and other local suppliers.

We're trading our house near SF for a home in Le Vésinet for part of the summer. Looking for local Le Vésinet recommendations re: small cafes, brasseries and farmer's markets. Yes, we'll do the Paris places rec'd here, but would like a few non-touristy tips to which we might be able to walk. Thanks.

[Wichita] Thai-Lao Cafe a winner!
Samba: I've been out of town the last few months. Can't wait to try T-L Cafe. Will probably go this week. Thanks for your efforts. BTW, the Vietnamese and Lao folks were originally resettled in Wichita in large numbers by the churches, particularly the Catholic Church.
BBQ/Franklin, TN
When I couldn't find any recommendations for a casual dinner spot in Franklin, TN to take my teenaged niece and nephew, we tried Puckett's. The cherry smoked chicken wings and pulled pork sandwiches were to die for. Puckett's cherry smoking was sweet, smooth and is still making our mouths water one week later. The hamburgers, which they recommend, were nothing special. The sweet potato fries were as good as Pearl's in good 'ol Mill Valley, CA. We all plan to get to Puckett's during our annual Christmas week visit.
Wichita: Any 'hounds at all out there?
Has anyone tried My-Canh's on S. Hillside? How does it compare to Pho Hot?

Steaks at home... Picadilly's meat counter is selling Creekstone filets and whole tenderloins. It's a few dollars a pound more than what's available elsewhere, but worth every cent. Until recently I had to get my Creekstone (produced just down the road in Ark City) on the West Coast. Mmmmm.

The Mulvane Italian restaurant is Luciano's. Best homemade pasta for 200 miles. On weekends, you need a reservation. Call about 4-5 days ahead. 316-777-0045.

Boy you are Kansas crazy -- for chains! Jason's, the fish joint and Granite City are all nationwide chains. There are homegrown Wichita restaurants that beat these hands down! None of these is anything special and certainly not worth a special trip.

Tangoman... Nuway is good, but not the only place loose meat sandwiches are made. Two brothers (I think) started it and had a falling out. One moved to Iowa (Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Marion) and opened the Made-rite stands. Same sandwich. Not all the Nuways make their own root beer. Some are using Barq's or Dad's. And, if you really have a stomache, you'll ask for your Nuways WET.
mid-west guests want dinner with a view
So parochial about Midwesterners... This one just ate at Slanted Door with a table full of Kansans. They all loved the food - especially the 14-year-old boy who caught a lot of waiters' eyes and never noticed. He was too busy chowing down. Only problem: too noisy and there are lots better water views around the Bay.
