Cafe for desserts in Union County, NJ?

OK thank you! I think you're referring to Tutti Baci Cafe..

We'll head there tomorrow!!

Cafe for desserts in Union County, NJ?

I'm looking for a cafe for a Saturday afternoon to go with some girlfriends, order some desserts and coffee, and just sit and be able to chat for an hour without being rushed out the door.

I'm trying to find something like Cafe Lalo (http://www.cafelalo.com/index.html) which I used to frequent with my girlfriends when I lived in NYC, where there is a counter with an assortment of cakes, you can sit and order off the menu for icecream, coffee, or cookies; and just sit and talk for an hour.

My girlfriends are now coming from NYC to visit me in NJ, but I'm not familiar with the Westfield/Cranford area, where we'll be. I've read about Ana Beall's Tea Room in Westfield, but seems to be getting mixed reviews (often empty, poor service, and expensive?!) on Chowhound. I'm not looking for a take-out place as none of us live in Union County and are all travelling over 45 minutes to Union County (central meeting location, and we plan to walk around Downtown Westfield for the afternoon).

Please tell me my options in Union County aren't the Cheesecake Factory or Starbucks, please! Thank you for all suggestions!

Good sit-down Chinese restaurant in greater Newark region?

Thank you for all the suggestions!!!!

Good sit-down Chinese restaurant in greater Newark region?

I have an uncle visiting from Asia and he'd like to meet up for some good authentic Chinese cuisine. He'll be staying at a Newark airport hotel.

I know of a couple of good Chinese restaurants near Edison such as Shanghai Park in Highland Park or Wonder Seafood in Edison. (That's a 40-minute drive). I also know of one in Middletown, near where I live. (Which would be a 60-minute drive.)

Can anybody recommend a good sit-down authentic Chinese cuisine (Cantonese or Shanghainese style preferred) that is under 30 minutes from Newark? I am NOT looking for Americanized versions or take-out places. Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

Indian takeout in West Long Branch

Neelam on Rt 35 in Middletown has a fairly nice Sunday night buffet. I haven't tried their regular menu or been there any time aside from Sunday night buffet, but their prices are excellent and the service is very good.

I believe they do deliver!

Fromagerie, Rumson

Dani, I agree with your review completely. I also decided to try Fromagerie for the Jersey Shore Restaurant Week.

Our meal started with a complimentary pate on toast from the chef, and a herb popover. We also found the popover to be less than satisfactory-- a little too chewy on the inside (not at all light and fluffy), and slightly too burnt on the outside.

My date got the French onion soup and I had the pear/walnut salad. Both excellent. The French onion soup was one of the few times at a restaurant that the chef actually uses the classic Gruyere cheese. I really dislike it when they just use regular swiss or worse, mozzarella. The broth was veal-based, I believe, not the traditional chicken or beef stock. It added a very nice flavor element.

For our entrees, I went with the bronzino-- similar to dani, it was delicious with a crispy skin. Date had the steak medium rare-- cooked perfectly with well seasoned fries.

For dessert, I had the chocolate lava cake which was perfectly cooked, and my date had the creme brulee. Creme brulee's surface was not evenly browned but taste was good and flavorful.

Meal without two non-alcoholic drinks plus a side of "shrimp and lap cheong fried rice" came to $100.
