Is anyone out there working on a Chowhound App for iPhone or Android etc.? Someone smart out there has to do this! I am at a loss without Chowhound when exploring a new city! |

Anyone been to Van Horne yet?? Reviews?? Actually we DID ask for a meal just without the fish component and the chef also refused stating he had standards and had spent time composing the specific plates. I was with this group of 6 and I think the chef was really unreasonable in not trying to accommodate our vegetarian friend in some way. |

In case any of you are bread bakers, I just wanted to let you all know that you can buy fresh yeast cake at Frenco Vrac on St. Laurent, near Duluth. I bought some today and tried it for the first time as I was looking for a truly flavorful yeast product, as opposed to the rather tasteless "active dry yeasts" that are available everywhere. Unfortunately, yeast that has been selected for rapid rise has had all the flavor bred out of it! Oops. Just realized CH can't upload photos from an iPad.....photo to follow. |

As a Chinese Canadian, I like Kimlan soya from Taiwan for eating sushi. You can buy it in Chinatown. China Lily is an awful product which I think is targeted at an unknowing audience. In Chinese cooking at least there are "cooking soyas" including Mushroom Soya and Dark soya, both used in small quantities for coloring the dish, whereas Light cooking soyas are for most stewed dishes. Light soya in Chinese brands means light in colour only, not in salt or flavor. No one wants a pitch black stewed pork rib dish.....sounds like you need to take a trip to Chinatown. It's all there, noodles too. |

I am so sad! My favorite little candy store on St Denis is closing! Louise Decarie Confiserie was a favorite for special treats. She is retiring and I don't know of any other little Bonbonnerie that even comes close to hers. So glad I got in there today. She really took the time to decorate each and every package of candy personally and took immense pleasure in ordering unique and delicious candies from all over the world. This was no M&M's or jelly beans candy store and I will sorely miss her treats! Enjoy your retirement, Louise! |

I've been to Satay Brothers, and IMHO, I think their Laksa is only OK. It is not a huge serving, firstly, and can be described as a snack only. Laksa is really a meal in Malaysia and Singapour and tends to be overflowing with toppings. Secondly, my fish cake was almost like rubber. Having said that, the flavour was very good and spicy. I'll be back for more, but only 'cuz there isn't a lot of choice in Montreal.... In Vancouver, there are Laksa "bars" where you can choose your noodle type, and 2 extra toppings(other than the bean sprouts, fried tofu, egg and fried onions that are standard) all for $7.50 which includes a drink! I know, you can't compare with a million Chinese there but the selection is really a must! ----- |

Thanks Cheryl and Max. I think my parents will love it. Reservations made! |

Garde Manger, Au Cinquieme Peche, Le Bleu Raisin, or DNA? Kitchen Galerie was AWESOME. We had a foie gras appetizer for 4 and it was an entire foie gras served with carmelized apples which went splendidly well together. We shared the mains, 2 people each: Beef ribs(so succulent and very large serving) and my friends had the ?Cornish Game hens. We didn't have room for dessert but did take in some lovely wine. ----- |

I didn't think it was possible until I saw it with my own eyes! That was one DIVINE BOVINE! |

Oh thank you, thank you! I will put it on the list to try! |

Does anyone have suggestions on where to find a traditional Argentinian Asado or BBQ grilled meat restaurant in Montreal. I just returned from Buenos Aires and I'm still salivating about the 600gm rib eye steak that the waiter cut with 2 spoons! So tender and succulent.....let my dream live on! |

Opening Tomorrow "Lawrence", 5201 Blvd St Laurent What's the phone number? I'd like to make reservations if that is possible..... |

Many thanks! I know the risk is low but I don't want to poison my godchildren.... |

Does anyone have an idea where to get good Laksa, the Malaysian/Singapourean coconut soup? I just got back from eating it in Vancouver where it was delicious and cheap. Any suggestions? |

Does anyone know where you can buy meringue powder. I need to make "Royal icing" to make a homemade gingerbread house, but royal icing is traditionally made with raw egg whites and this means you can't eat the gingerbread house! Now what's the fun in that? Meringue powder apparently is a good alternative and allows you the pleasure of picking off all the candies and eating the gingerbread house! |

Burger DE ville - NDG ( Westminster) Burger De Ville is a landmark in Montreal-Ouest(not NDG). Great burgers, excellent prices, all the fixin's for free(unbelievable choice too!) and awesome fries. I sometimes go to visit friends just so I can grab a burger there. I am so happy that they finally opened in the Plateau---haven't eaten there yet but spoke to the owner and expressed my gratitude! |

I just received that email too. I was so sad, but having read the thread below, I am relieved that they are not throwing in the towel and giving up on a winning recipe! Wonder what the new resto will be called? Glad I ate there last week! |

Any Dep selling American Microbrews? They probably don't want to translate every label into French! All ethnic products and anything made outside Quebec has to have a French label on it for at least the ingredients. |

We just went to O'Thym on Amherst and de Maisonneuve last night. Haven't been there in years and it is still as good as I remember it 7 years ago. It has always been a BYOB. The menu changes often depending on what is in season. |

Thanks for the donation, Marblebag. Come join me for the run! CT |

Thanks, Carswell for passing this on. I'm thanking all the Chowhounders in advance for their contributions to the Run for the Cure. Hope to see a few more of them join the actual team for the run! Mila would be very impressed, I think! |
|
|
I second that! I know that Mila would want us to feast and drink in her honour! |

cool. Thanks for the update. |

Has anyone tried the (new) Montee on St-Laurent? Is it much like Bouchonee was(a wine bar with good nibbles) or more like the Montee was(ie. sit down resto with high quality food)? I have friends in town in early June and was hoping to bring them there. |

Has anyone got any comments on La Sirene de la mer, a Lebanese seafood restaurant on Sauve O.? I've been invited there tomorrow and want to know what's the best thing to order. Any super-stellar dishes to suggest? |
|

I still like Pinxtos on Roy and Laval for their lunch deals. I think they are only open on Thursdays and Fridays though for lunch. |
