Restaurant recommendations for post graduation lunch?
After four long years, mr. burntcream is about to officially become dr. burntcream. The graduation ceremony will be in SF on a weekday and end at about one pm, we will likely leave SF and start heading down south. Probably can't realistically arrive at the restaurant till about two at the earliest. We will have about twelve guests, looking for something between SF and San Mateo, not too fancy or expensive. We would love expensive but likely will have to foot the bill ourselves ;) We like asian food, but definitely open to anything else. Thanks for any recs.
Yank Sing Mediocre at Best
Never tried the dim sum.I've only been there once, for a wedding dinner. The dinner was such a feast and everything was incredibly good. I still think about that meal.
Shanghai Dumpling Shop in Millbrae?
I don't care for them, to me they were no better than frozen ones.
Refrigerating Blueberries?
Thanks, those are both great tips. I am excited to try it with raspberries, they mold so quickly I usually end up throwing them away.
Refrigerating Blueberries?
Is it better to leave them in the plastic box they came in (with the vents)so they can breathe, or are they ok in tupperware? Will they last longer if stored in tupperware? Thanks.
Fresh sage and rosemary-what to do with it?
Thanks for all the great ideas, I will try them out. Wish I could share it all with you!
Fresh sage and rosemary-what to do with it?
My mom went to the farmers market and picked up plenty fresh sage and rosemary, does anyone have any recipes or suggestions? I don't cook with fresh herbs often, thanks.
Grand Sichuan Dan Dan Noodle Recipe??
Sorry, no tips for the noodles. I don't know how authentic the Fuchsia Dunlop book is, I recently checked it out from the library and remembered thinking that the recipes didn't seem very authentic.
Lee's Sandwiches
I don't post often, but when I saw your topic I felt compelled to answer. I love vietnamese sandwiches- I always try new places when I'm down in San Jose. That said, Lee's made the absolute worst one I have ever tried, and the only time I've ever tossed a sandwich. I had grilled pork, which was nothing but grilled fat. The vegetables were extremely scarce, just a couple of shreds. UGGGHHH! This was about 3-4 years ago, but I still remember it like it was yesterday.
Kit's Island BBQ in Redwood City
I've never seen steam tables either. I looked at the menu, they have potstickers. Potstickers in Hawaii??
Freezing brownies?
Mmm, I love brownies. I've never heard of putting batter into a freezer before baking, but I do recall in a Alice medrich(?) chocolate book that she gave instructions to put the brownies in the freezer for a short time after removing from the oven. I don't remember the purpose.
Pinkberry is coming to Stanford, Palo Alto
I think you will be seeing a lot more pinkberrys, I think I read recently that they received $30 million in VC.
need to make 12 dozen chocolate cupcakes...recipes?
The recipe on the hershey's can is actually pretty good, I think it's called one bowl chocolate cake. It can likely be converted into cupcakes.
Mushy but good chicken recipes?
Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I think you are correct about the "mushy" in my title. Afterwards I thought, hmmm, maybe I should have given it a different title.......:)
Mushy but good chicken recipes?
Mr. Burntcream is having a lot of dental work coming up and it will be difficult to chew. Does anyone have any good chicken (or other types of meat)recipes that are soft and stew-like? Doesn't need to be a stew, but that's the only way I can think of that would be tender enough. Thanks.
as a chowhound how do you keep from getting fat???
Exercise is a must. I started walking a couple of miles a day on my treadmill and have lost 12 pounds without trying. For health reasons I also cut back on a lot of sugar and white flour. I really miss cookies and other baked goods, when I do bake I use less sugar than the recipe calls for and use at least half wheat flour in nearly everything. I get rid of most of the yolks when I scramble eggs. This sounds really weird, but my grandmother in France taught me how to cook oatmeal into a savory porridge with chopped chard, chicken broth and chicken breast and I've been having that for breakfast a lot.
Bong Su Chocolate Truffle Cookies - recipe? [Moved from SF Bay Area]
Please explain what bong su is......I love cookies, what is special about these?
Cooking Trader Joe's (thin) Wild Alaskan Salmon Fillets
Do you find the trader joe's frozen salmon to be very old and smelly? I bought three different types there to try, and honestly, they were awful and inedible. I found some wild copper river frozen salmon at cosco that's very good. I think it costs a little more than joe's, but it is worth it.
More on "To go" and other charges.
I won't go anywhere that charges for the takeout container for the simple reason that hardly anyone does it. There are too many restaurants to give my money to. There's actually a place I enjoy, but won't go for takeout cause I don't want to pay for a container. Are you sure you actually enjoy the restaurant business?
Rec for oil cruet?
I'm looking for a good, no drip cruet to leave on top of the range. Anyone know of one? Thanks.
If you were choosing one of these cookware sets...
I have a set of all clad consisting of about six pots and pans. A couple of years ago, I was searching for a 10 qt. stock pot but didn't want to spend all the money for an all clad one. I bought a Calphalon Tri-Ply Stainless-Steel one off amazon for about $60. In my opinion, it cooks just as well as all clad. It heats up just as quickly and the heat stays nice and even. I am incredibly impressed with this line, and recommend it to everyone who asks. Actually, I think I reach for my calphalon pots more often than the all clad. I'm really picky about cookware and bakeware and can't stand cheap inferior products. All clad is the prestigous one, so people tend to choose that line.
Rice Krispies Treats as Pie Crust
Maybe an ice cream pie would be good. Before serving, fill it with scoops of ice cream. Add sliced banans and top with some whipped cream and fudge sauce for a banana split pie.
Candy corn dessert?
I saw some really cute candy corn shaped cookies. Take a basic sugar cookie recipe and divide into three parts, color one part yellow and one orange. Shape the entire thing like candy corn then slice and bake.
Things you eat only for their "health" benefits
All Bran extra fiber cereal. Yuk, a bowl of twigs with soy milk.
An Extraordinary Grilled Cheese Sandwich is... [moved from General Chowhounding Topics]
Dill pickles and Kraft slices on texas toast, not smashed. I was horrified the first time I saw my future mother in law smash down a grilled cheese.
Sprinkles Cupcakes in Palo Alto
I've read about these cupcake stores but never been to one. What are the cupcakes like? Is it like having a good homemade one, or somehow better than homemade?
