Bludso's Texas Sampler - will it hold?

a curbside picnic with ribs, brisket, greens, mac, and cornbread is the best way to experience bludso's. the sauce and sides come in styrofoam containers, which won't hold the heat that long. you'd need to get some bowls at the hotel.

you can also stop at marukai to eat in the food court. i've done that a bunch of times (grocery shopping is a good excuse to make a quick detour).

I have never, ever, had a bad meal at ____________and I have eaten there over a dozen times!

i have fond memories of their pasta putanesca from way back when. did they ever bring back the pasta guy?

I have never, ever, had a bad meal at ____________and I have eaten there over a dozen times!

not many on my list. it's either an occasional treat that's awesome (e.g., bludso's), or a local place that's alright (e.g., seafood town). the neighborhood restaurant that's knock-your-socks-off great remains elusive. =(

Birthday dinner - Torihei, Izakaya Bincho, or ???

hard question. the food is good at both places. on a weekday, bincho is less busy and quieter than torihei, which has more seating and a livelier atmosphere. it can be chilly or drafty at either, so i'd wear a jacket if it's cold.

shin-sen-gumi is another option, and tsujita's izakaya menu is on my to-try list. robata jinya, too.

Help -- Last minute dim sum in south bay

seconded. the dim sum options around here are disappointing.

aside from ramen (jidaiya, mottainai, yamadaya, etc.), i'd suggest curry at coco ichibanya for the kids. i like it mild with crispy chicken and lots of carrots.

The Archetypical Los Angeles Food Experience

there isn't just one and it can involve bad food just as often as good food. =)

Randolph's Smoke House

The ribs I got looked the same as the ones in those photos, black and burnt. They didn't taste burnt, though.

Many BBQ joints in South Central are inconsistent because of turnover and meat quality issues, so I would play it safe and go on Friday or during the weekend.

Westwood Area

"especially the cutlet and hot dog varieties."

ftfy. ;)

Vietnamese in the South Bay

over in carson, i'd recommend pho king way instead of blue lotus.

Fujin Ramen: Who has been?

want.

Ramen Yamada-ya coming to Culver City in May

it's been all over the map for me. texture and flavor of the meat, doneness and marination of the egg, fishiness, porkiness, and temperature of the soup, doneness of the noodles. despite these shortcomings, it's still my favorite ramen-ya. i prefer it over the local competition for the food, atmosphere, and location, but it's not at the top of my list for best ramen, per se.

maybe i sound too critical, but that's because i really, really want it to be better.

Ramen Yamada-ya coming to Culver City in May

if this new location is more consistent than the one in torrance, i'm going to be very jealous.

looking for "chewy" gelato

i've never had gelato as you've described it, but half the time i go to handel's it's sort of chewy. i figure it depends on the temperature.

biscotti sandwich

the next time you're in redondo beach's riviera village, i recommend that you pick up a biscotti sandwich at cafe arigato. they are filled with sliced almonds and nutella. biscotti might be inaccurate since the cookies are probably only baked once, though you'll still have to dip them in coffee to soften them up.

Soul Burgers in Inglewood

it's pretty good. i think you'd like it.

Ramen Jinya opening on Sawtelle?

we should organize a ramen crawl one of these days. something weird is going on with these wildly inconsistent opinions.

Favorite "messy food" dish in LA?

pulled pork sandwich at jay bees or bludso's (which is a lot bigger than it used to be).

STACKED - Torrance - New South Bay Restaurant Review

the fries had a flaky crust, weren't greasy, and were cut across the grain. could have used more salt, but it evened out with the generously seasoned burger.

i'm going to get a chicago style hot dog next time, since they have all the ingredients.

STACKED - Torrance - New South Bay Restaurant Review

i went there today and got a burger and sweet potato fries. the pretzel bun was oily and the patty was too salty, but it was cooked medium rare as ordered and the ipad menu wasn't that bad. it takes longer to order if you're with a group, but it's easy to use. safe to say i'll be going there instead of johnny rockets after the movies.

Sherry Vinegar Source?

you can order online, too.

It's Still Panning Out for the Best

that was a rilly gewd patty melt. =)

South Bay Recommendations?

was gruel on the menu? (half serious)

ISO best bbq in l.a.?

i don't really like mustard based potato salad. more of a japanese mashed potato salad or ensalada rusa kinda guy.

ISO best bbq in l.a.?

the way i see it, a great bbq joint shouldn't half-ass the sides. it detracts from the bbq. one more reason why bludso's and the park's finest kick butt. =)

ISO best bbq in l.a.?

i appreciate good sides a lot. here's my take on who's got the best:

collard greens: bonnie b's
runners up: bigmista, bludso's (phillips is always bitter and has no meaty flavor in the pot liquor...hmm)
beans: bludso's
runner's up: j 'n' j, bodacious
mac & cheese: bludso's
coleslaw: bludso's
potato salad: none so far
cornbread: bludso's, park's finest (cornbread bibingka)

Breakfast burritos in Torrance?

what about taco sinaloa #3?

EMPANADAS~ Where can I buy Empanadas dough/disk in Los Angeles?

el gaucho in redondo beach.

Take-home Yakitori

are you cooking for 100 people all by yourself? if so, i suggest something easier, like a temaki sushi bar or gyoza.

Take-home Yakitori

doesn't marukai have the meat precut? all you have to do is soak the bamboo skewers for half an hour and get a stabbin'.

Blood Sausage in LA?

the galleria is bigger, newer, and generally more crowded. i haven't tried the soondae at cham cham cham in the galleria, but i would think it's just as good.
