Calphalon vs. Tramontina
Thanks! I did notice that the rim was smooth on the contemporary line. I would assume because of that they don't get as dirty anymore...
Calphalon vs. Tramontina
Thanks for the info! What sizes do you have? Do they seem heavy to you? Do the handles work well for you? Do the fry pans seem to perform as well as other high-price brand?
Calphalon vs. Tramontina
I'm just out of college and trying to decide between the calphalon contemporary ss and the tramontina tri ply ss. I'm buying a set (gasp) because I have found that I use quite a lot of pans and imagine myself using all of what each set has to offer and haven't find enough good deals to pick and choose what I'd like. The two sets (8pc calphalon and 10pc tramontina) are basically the same in price (around $220).
I really like the look and feel of the calphalon set. The handles seem to fit well in my hand and the pans are pretty light but also well-constructed. I must say that I am wary of the glass lids of the calphalon set, though, because I've used some other glass lid calphalon's (a cheaper set) and it can get pretty dirty within the seams of the metal and glass and the fogged up glass doesn't really offer any advantage. The tramontina set is overall heavier than the calphalon and the handles aren't really as comfortable (but better than the all-clad I've tried) but this set feels well-constructed too and it's a plus that they have stood up in tests against all-clad (which I would love to have in the future when I can afford them). The tramontina set also includes much better sizes (10 and 12 inch pans versus 8 and 10, 12qt stock versus 8qt) and appears to be induction-ready.
Basically, I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of each set. The feel and weight of the calphalon is a plus but the glass lid is probably a con. The set sizes, ability to stand up to all-clad, and induction-capabilities are a pro of the tramontina set but the weight and pan handles are a con. Has anyone here tried either of these sets? Is there any reason to think the tramontina set is not as well-constructed and can't perform as well as the calphalon set? Does anyone have any opinions on the glass lids? Or the weight and handles of the tramontina set?
Thanks for any and all help. And if anyone wants to try to persuade me to not go the set route, please let me know where I can buy similar stuff (at least 8" & 10" pan, 2 sauce pans, and a stock pot) for around the same price!
