Provence Restaurants

bonsebrunet,

I spend a fair amount of time in Uzès, so I have few suggestions, in addition to Terroirs (for lunch) and 80 Days--although most are not in Uzès proper, where in general I don't think the restaurants are exceptional.

Castillion-du-Gard: l'Amphytiron--probably best described as "gourmet" (Mario, the owner, is a character.) Also, his wife has a casual little bistro just down the street (les Jarres) where you can have a light lunch outside during a bike ride.

Gaujac (between Uzès and Bangols-sur-Ceze): la Maison--a (slightly) Asian twist on classic French cooking. Pierre is front of house and his wife is the chef.

Sanilhac: le Tracteur (look for the red tractor parked outside). Menu changes every day, usually only two starters and two mains, but very, very good. Have had mixed success with their wine list, though. . .

Uzès: l'Artimise: it's had mixed reviews (particularly on the price/value scale) but we had a very nice lunch there last year and are returning for a birthday celebration in a couple of weeks.

Nimes: l'Imprévu. We went during the Feria so they had a limited menu, but it's right on the Place d'Assas, just up from the Maison Carrée.

Avignon: I know where you're talking about on the rue des Teinturiers but there's several restaurants there so I can't be more specific, either. Just off the rue des Teinturiers is Numero 75. Very nice seating in the walled garden. And for a special occasion, Christian Etienne, by the Palais des Papes. (Michelin 1*).

Also, in Cassis, if you can get a room (there are only three), stay at Nino, which is actually a long-time restaurant and the original owner's son has added three very nice rooms overlooking the harbor. They have website with pictures of the rooms (and the view!)

Hope this helps!

Anyone experiences Compartir in Cadaqués?

Had lunch at Comparitr last week. Excellent. Nothing 'molecular" as you might expect, but exquisitely prepared. Only slightly cooked razor clams were incredible, as were marinated anchovies with citrus--both starters to share. In fact, they encourage sharing. Ordered a whole oven-roasted loup de mer and it came to the table cut into three pieces. Also had "tempura" of gambas and vegetables with a light, fluffy aioli. Planning on returning for dinner in a couple of weeks with friends.

Sunday lunch in San Sebastian: What is more unique? Akelarre or a pintxos crawl?

Have the tasting menu. When we were there last May one of the first courses was a "cosmetics tray" (Don't ask, just enjoy if that's what comes.). Seemed a little trick, but it was incredible--and the rest of the menu only got better (and less trick).

Let the somellier suggest wine. I leaned red, he suggested white (followed by a glass of red to go with the meat dish) and he was spot on.

Enjoy!

Lunch in Paris on New Year's Day

Thanks, souphie! I love positive reinforcement for a decision I was leaning towards anyway. Chez les Anges it is!

Lunch in Paris on New Year's Day

As it turns out, Chez les Anges is open on NYD. Other options that I have confirmed are open are Les Bouquinistes (where we have eaten before) and L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon (where we have not dined, but others in our group have). We are in fact a party of seven, so that may affect recommendations and our ability to secure a reservation.

Thoughts, particularly about Chez les Anges?

Lunch in Paris on New Year's Day

Souphie, you are of course correct. I misread LaFourchette.com when looking at available restaurants and both La Régalade and AOC are closed on NYD. Other suggestions have been Chez les Anges, Au Bon Accueil and Dominique Bouchet. but I suspect none of those are open on NYD ether (I'm checking. . . ).

Lunch in Paris on New Year's Day

Looking for a bistrot in Paris for a long, leisurely recovery lunch on New Year's Day. Of the restaurants that appear to be open, I was thinking of La Régalade, Les Bouquinistes, AOC or La Rotonde de la Muette (16th). Had an enjoyable lunch at La Rotonde a few months ago.

Thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks!
