Anyone know what chain/restaurant this is? New paint job on old Trafalgar Lick's (Oakville)

How about that old Celine Dion chain, Nickels Deli? I think they were greenish with checks. Hope not.

Jolokia/Ghost peppers.

I've seen them for sale in Kensignton market. Specifically at the store located on the corner of baldwin/kensington.

Duggans is closed (permanently)

The space is run by Molson's 6 pints division. This is their craft brewery arm (Creemore and Granville Island are 6 pints breweries).

There's no doubt that this is a very weird space. I thought it looked nice (retail area) but I don't think that I'd ever order a beer there and sit down. (It's odd enough that I'm not sure you can).

Having said that, the on site beers are very well executed. I have had the belgian brown, klosh and black lager. I think the mandate is to brew beers that are completely representative of the styles. They do them well but I think the price point is expensive at $6.50 a quart. (that works out to about a $19 6 pack).

Ultimately, this would not be a viable space if it weren't also the corporate offices of 6 pints but the beer is not bad for what it is.

Toronto with young children ???

I would also suggest the Mill Street Brew Pub in the distillery district. Interesting location for a tourist, pleasant pub atmosphere. The food is on the better side for pub food and they have a bunch of beers that are brewed there. I was there on a Sunday lunch and the half the restaurant was parents with kids.

What's Good in Kingston These Days?

Not sure if it is still there but the Wok in, up from Princess on Montreal street is a great place for a cheap lunch. It's closed on Sundays. I loved it in uni and since then I have traveled extensively in Thailand/Cambodia/Viet nam and it still compares favorably. I was last there 2 years ago so others may have more up to date information to add

Duggans Brewery - just a comment, more than anything else....

Totally agree. I like the beer and the food and the place is good value, but the service is a shambles. I had a better experience where the bartender, manager and I think the hostess that seated us chipped in to keep the drinks and food coming but our server was disorganized, running around large areas of the restaurant and clearly had too many tables to cover.

P.S. When I was there the #9 was displayed but not actually on sale. I think they are still getting licenses etc. That was around Jan. 20th though.

Ideas for Group Lunch (Don Mills/Eglinton)

Thank you for all the suggestions. We ultimately went to Joeys at the Shops at Don Mills. I would second the suggestion that the food is definately better than Jack Astors and it had enough selection for a mixed group. I had the fish tacos and the fish chunks were nicely cooked and breaded. Terrible beer list, no microbrews/local choices at all. I didn't look at the wine list. I make this comment as the west coast chain focuses on local BC wines. The staff are good looking and vapid. If you live/work in the area, you could do worse.

Reliable fish and chips...blah

I second JPJ's review. I thought it was a great big portion of deep fried goodness. Get take out though. The entrance to the restaurant (which is still outside of the main room) also has stairs leading down. Not sure if they'd had a plumbing issue that day but I was greeted by an overwhelming smell of urine. No amount of money could convince me to descend the 'Silence of the Lambs' stairs. The good news is the kitchen and food prep does not take place down there and the actual sitting area is not too bad but god forbid you need to use the bathroom.

Ideas for Group Lunch (Don Mills/Eglinton)

Thanks for the tips. I'm thinking Joey's grill may be a good bet. I'd like to avoid Jack Astors if possible. I would love Congee Star but I have a few conservative eaters in the team. I never touch the buffet at Caribbean Palms (I'm too big to do all you can eat) but the roti is great there.

Ideas for Group Lunch (Don Mills/Eglinton)

I'm trying to organize a work lunch later this week. We're located at Don Mills and Eglinton but we'll have access to cars. I'm thinking we can get as far as Bayview/The Golden Mile area or down to the east end of the Danforth.

There will be six of us. I need good vegetarian options (for some) and a modest price point. To give you an idea of the price point, I've been told that Linda is too expensive. Does anyone have a good suggestion?

kalonji black onion seed

You can get it a the shops in Little India. I didn't know that onion seeds were called kalonji(sp) which is how they are labeled in the shop so you are already ahead of the game. Not sure on specific names for stores but there are several on the south side which carry it.

Diners, drive-ins and dives

In Woodstock is a decent place called Big Al's Snack Shack. Definitely a good burger and fries and if it floats your boat, deep fried pickles.

Caffrey's Irish Ale

Yes, it is in Ontario, sold through the LCBO. Sold in 4 packs of widget cans. The packaging as changed to green. I had one last night.

City mouse, country mouse

I would definately go to the Mill Street brew pub in the distillery district. Casual surroundings, beers that aren't sold in the LCBO, and decent food. Good place for a walk, and a look around as well. I think taking the King street car east will get you near the area.

Strickland Meats on Greenwood?

I've been curious too. I saw that they were advertising Melton Mowbray Pork Pies in the shop which made my british heart all a flutter.

When I get down there to buy one, I'll report back.

Coffee at Danforth / Coxwell?

The Last Drop Cafe at Coxwell & Sammon (10 minute walk north on Coxwell) has decent coffee and a nice atmosphere.

Store that specializes in British goods?

The tabbaco shop in the Attrium on Bay sells British chocolate bars. I think that's the only downtown location I've seen.

Where to buy habanero peppers?

Yes, Perola's had fresh habaneros. It was around $3 for 18 peppers.

Where to buy habanero peppers?

I've recently got into making my own hot sauce and I was wondering if anyone knows of a place that sells habanero peppers in Toronto? I think they would have to be fresh, not dried or tinned to be good in a blended hotsauce.

I live off the Danforth so an east side location would be nice but I suspect my best bet will be the latin grocery stores in Kensington market. I have a car and can travel.
