Best cheap eats Lisbon & Funchal
Hi rieu,
To be perfectly honest, I didn't find a ton of great spots. Part of that is no doubt because I opted not to rent a car while on the island (which I would definitely recommend - the public transport system isn't particularly efficient and having a car really opens up different regions for exploration). So, that prevented me from exploring some of the options mentioned above.
I woudl recommend Restaurante Gaviã o Novo (Rua de Santa Maria, 131; 351-291-229-238). It's a very simple fish restaurant in the old part of Funchal. Nothing much to look at - and not inventive food - but delicious, fresh fish prepared that day based on what is in the market. For me, it's hard to go wrong with that. We ate outside, which was lovely, as it's on an old cobbled street, and loved our evening there.
Cheers!

Thanks for this! I didn't see your response until now. Looking forward to trying out some of those sardines...

Awesome! Thanks for the recommendations - sound like our kind of places. I'll report back!

Hi jacionasty,
Did you find anything good in Funchal/Madeira? Husband and I are heading there around the same time (late March) this year and you're the only post I can find about Madeira on here!
Have any good tips to report?!
Thanks! :)

Czech Republic - Prague & Cesky Krumlov
Hi chowhounds!
I'm going to the Czech Republic for the first time over Christmas - approx. the 22nd-26th of December, and am looking for great places to eat (high-end and low-end) in Prague and Cesky Krumlov. Would love to have traditional Czech cooking, but also other local foods - I hear there's great Vietnamese food in little Hanoi, for example.
Thanks very much!
Had success cooking loved D.C. restaurant dishes at home?
I recently made the Jose Andres/Jaleo apple and manchego salad, as well as Komi's salt-baked branzino. Both were absolute standouts, and both were ridiculously easy. Didn't use recipes (though I think the branzino recipe is in the WaPo database) - just went by taste. Fantastic!

ISO a Schlotzky's-style sandwich
I second Taylor Gourmet. It's different than Schlotzky's, but a delicious sandwich with fantastic bread. The new-ish roast pork shoulder with broccoli raab is to die for.

Beef samosas?
Kelly, you're right - the ones you're thinking of are more Kenyan (I grew up there). The only place I know of that makes them is a Kenyan restaurant - Safari DC. People say the service is terrible, but it actually reminds me of home; I love it! You just can't be too high-maintenance, it doesn't fly. But their samosas are good Kenyan-style with the thin wonton-like wrapper. While I love places like Naan and Beyond, their samosas are NOT the type you're used to in East Africa. Good luck!

What's the 2nd best sandwich place in DC?
Have to agree that Breadline is overrated. I second cowgirl creamery and Taylor.
Venison on the menu
I had it recently at Montmartre on the Hill - you could call and check to see if it's on menu or on special. I had it braised osso-buco style in a wine sauce - it was to die for.

Cambodian food?
Missing the great food I had in Cambodia on a trip a few months back - anyone have an idea where I can get some?
An LA Chowhounder's Trip to D.C.
You based your view on DC food based on 4 national chains (BV's, Cosi, CB, Potbelly), an "institution" (places that are widely KNOWN to have mediocre food and just be popular for their historicity) and only 2 real DC restaurants?? No wonder you had such a bad experience - and I expect more from a Chowhound!
Next time you come, try one of these, or any other local restaurant that the Chowhounds could have pointed you to:
Rasika, Jaleo, Oyamel, Zaytinya, Central, Marvin, 2 Amy's, Et Voila, Proof, Cork, Brasserie Beck, Taylor (not to mention Palena, Komi, CityZen, Minibar and the other expensive but delicious restaurants out here.)
If I came to LA and judged it based on Au Bon Pain and McDonald's I think you'd agree I wouldn't have a good picture of the city's food culture.
