Glencora's Profile
Bay Area Food Festivals and Events - May 2012
Melanie, thanks for posting about the Edible Schoolyard sale. I bought a $7 currant plant -- there were lots of vegetable plants, but I'm already set for those. Lovely setting. Tasty $3 pizza from the wood-fired oven. Now I'm starting to wonder whether my plant is self-pollinating.... oh, well, fun event in any case.
Outdoor dining in Walnut Creek/Concord?
I just went to Morucci's Si Mangia Bene for the first time a couple weeks ago -- nice outdoor patio, nothing fancy, but warmer than Berkeley. Full of locals with a nice non-chain feeling. Delicious sandwiches. May be farther than you want to walk, though -- just under a mile from BART.
For quick take out fried ckn in Berkeley - TC or Popeyes?
Maybe I was unclear -- or you were dense :) -- I meant that Toot Sweets now carries Rainbow Donuts. I just noticed a new awning advertising donuts a couple days ago and a quick peek inside verified this. I used to like Toot Sweets' bear claws, but haven't had them in years. Not sure how much of the old stuff they carry.
What's Going In Your Garden Now?
I just counted more than a dozen artichokes on two plants. The potatoes are growing like mad. A two day heat spell caused the lovely big lettuces to start to bolt. I'm sad about that, but everything else is good. I dumped lots of compost on the raspberries last fall and they are now covered with buds. A hummingbird has built a nest in the pear tree so I can't thin the fruits. Whenever I go near the tree it buzzes angrily in my face. Springtime....
Vegan foods at Trader Joe's - What's good?
One other thing -- my parents get vegan frozen pizzas from TJ's and everything I've tried has been pretty awful. Mostly because of the crusts, So I suggest you avoid those.
Has anyone eaten at Restaurant 3000? (Menlo Park)
It's at 3000 Sand Hill Road. The menu seems to be standard soup, salad, sandwiches and a few entrees. Reviews on Y..p are good. Any thoughts? There doesn't seem to be much else in the area.
How Come "Rare" Duck is Okay, but "Rare" Chicken is Deadly?
I see from your profile that you're in the East Bay. I thought of that Izakaya restaurant too when I saw the title of this thread. I assume they don't kill off their customers. Do they just have very, very high quality meat?
Dinner near the Magic Theater [Fort Mason]
BIN 38 looks good. The pictures on their website show an outdoor area that I'm guessing would be nice in warm weather.
What did you have for breakfast today?
I used to have 5 a day, but I've cut back. :)
Vegan foods at Trader Joe's - What's good?
They're good, but too starchy to eat with a bun, imo.
Vegan foods at Trader Joe's - What's good?
I like the meatballs quite a bit -- and I'm not at all vegan.
Holy basil seeds?
I like buying seeds on Etsy because they're usually offered small amounts, are inexpensive and I'm buying from an individual instead of a corporation. They're usually fresh, too. Not everything is available, but you could take a look.
What did you have for breakfast today?
Coffee and three dark chocolate-covered almonds at 6AM.. Then, three hours later, some left over salmon banh mi. Then more coffee.
For quick take out fried ckn in Berkeley - TC or Popeyes?
There's a menu for TC's in Toot Sweets and the bakery has started carrying donuts.
For quick take out fried ckn in Berkeley - TC or Popeyes?
Yes, I saw that two seconds after I posted. Looks interesting.
Spicy Tuna Roll--Salmonella Outbreak--Seafood "pink slime"?
The only time I've become ill from raw fish was after spicy tuna rolls. Haven't eaten them since.
Dinner near the Magic Theater [Fort Mason]
Not Greens. The other places mentioned on the theater's website are Zushi Puzzle (don't feel like sushi), Ristorante Parma (menu looks boring), and Pacific Catch (maybe less boring, but looks chain-y). I'm not very familiar with the Marina. Are there any interesting options? This will be on a Thursday.
Calorie listings at chains
It's probably a good thing, if a bit of a bummer. It made me change my order at Rubio's from a couple of fried fish tacos to grilled fish tacos. Of course I always knew grilled was healthier, but somehow seeing it posted...
Need recommendations for lunch today near El Cerrito
Crossing Marin is hard, I agree. I often walk out of my way to cross at Key Route. The crossing guard at Talbot is fearless, though!
Back on topic, I had lunch at Montero's today. They now call themselves Timbao Tropical Restaurant and Bar. It's a bit odd--they still have plenty of Mexican, but also some Caribbean food on the menu. I tasted the ceviche, the shrimp fritters and the Cubano. They were all good, not great, and the place is pleasant.
Rockridge/Oak/Berk Area-What is the best taco truck?
When is it at the Hotsy Totsy? Never seen it. Thanks.
Fatdaddy's BBQ - El Cerrito
He wasn't quite ready, but it was a nice day for a walk in Tilden. And it was worth going back for.
Could it be that I drowned my seedlings?
Do you mean that you planted seeds or set out seedlings? If you planted seeds -- what kind were they? Some plants might take that long to germinate. If the drainage is good, they probably didn't drown. Maybe the weather is too cool for them to sprout. Really need more info to be of much help.
Need recommendations for lunch today near El Cerrito
If you say so. Still a short walk either way.

So is Zaki. The shawarma I had at Sophia was disappointing.
In search of caramel sauce for ice cream sundaes in Berkeley
Have you tried the Burger Depot at the bottom of Solano? I haven't been there in ages, but it's one of the only old fashioned (not gourmet, but good) places I can think of that still has big sundaes.
Good Japanese/Asian Store in Berkeley, San Jose or Santa Clara?
Never would have noticed it.
The vegetable plants have arrived.
Visiting from Boston with my 15 yo daughter
I agree that the Westfield food court is unpleasant. In that area my son likes the Mexican food at Tropisueno. I think it's pretty good, too. He likes to follow up with a cream puff from Beard Papa's a couple doors down. (I loathe them, but teens seem to like them.)

I agree - the mole at Talavera is good.
Bistro 1491 still has that sterile chain-y atmosphere that Walker's Pie Shop had, and still seems to have an older clientele, but the food isn't bad and the service is very friendly.
