Non-casserole entree liked by adults and kids

If stew isn't off the table, African Chicken Peanut stew (reduce the cayenne) goes over big with kids- it's peanut butter stew! Plus you can sneak a lot of veg's into it, I like to add chopped kale.
I second the taco suggestion, since if the kids are really picky about being able to identify everything they are eating, they are a good option (plus adults can have more adventerous options for their fillings/condiments).

What's in your freezer

Since it's just DH and I, and we don't eat dinner during the week most of the time, I don't keep a lot of frozen un-cooked meat. However, during the summer, we will buy one of those 3 lb value packs of boneless chicken breasts and grill them. I wrap them in bundles of 2 and that way we can make a quick salad by defrosting them and slicing them up to put over greens. I can also used the cooked chicken (chopped up) to make a quick chili.

Two meals, skip the pretense

even if you don't have a car...you can take PATCO from 8th and Market to the Haddonfield stop and walk there!

scored at the local supermarket - Passover clearance

Local supermarket which had a very large section of "Kosher for Passover" foods had them piled in carts for clearance. If you aren't against eating it (for religious reasons), check out your local market if you have one with a large Kosher clientele. I scored two glass jars of tehina for 99 cents each. They had dried fruit and ground nuts, also. There were some premade macaroon (egg white/coconut based) pie shells also, in chocolate and coconut flavors, which I thought could be good for icebox pies. I was surprised how much was still left. Not just leftover matzohs!

What tasks do you excel at in the kitchen?

Two skills come to mind:
Perfectly even dice, slice, whatever cut is needed (inherited ability from my Dad).
Packing leftovers - I am a savant at looking at a pile of leftovers and knowing exactly what size container it will fit in to. Probably also in my genes, as Grandpa had a moving business, so packing stuff is in the family skill set.

Sammy Chon's KTown Express- YUMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!

the Cherry Hill location is on Rt.70 in (another) strip mall just west of where I-295 hits

Pizza Help

went to Gennaro's last night (down the road from DeLo's on 33) around 6pm and they were slammed also. Waitress said Fridays during Lent are brutal.

making your own Dulce de Leche

you can also make it in the microwave, where it is poured out of the can and into a micro-safe container (I use corningware).

Are there any Good Chinese Restuarants in Hamilton NJ - Mercer Cty?

if you like it spicier...Szechuan House on Nottingham Way

Dogs in Restaurants

Apparently Martha Stewart took her prize-winning chow, Ghenghis Khan, to the Plaza Hotel before the Westminter dog show. For a meal in the restaurant. He was sitting on one of the chairs at the table, I saw photos online. How can this be legal?

foods you eat to get full without consuming too many calories?

the puy lentils keep a firmer texture, if you are making something where you want a nice chew...I found them in the bulk bean bins at Whole Foods, so I just buy a cup of them and it keeps the cost down. The red, brown, or yellow lentils tend to break down a little more, I use them in soup.

canned tuna--what do you like to do with it (healthy)?

I mix one can drained tuna with one mushed up avocado instead of mayo. Splash of lemon juice, seasonings...on some bread with salsa. It makes 2 servings for me (since hubby is a tuna/mayo purist). Avocado is nature's mayo!

foods you eat to get full without consuming too many calories?

plain popcorn, no butter, no salt, but I sprinkle with Penzey's Arizona Dreaming spice mix. I also graze all day and try to make sure to incorporate fiber into the snacks. Recently made a batch of lentils du puy and they make a yummy snack as a room temp salad with a little vinegar, very filling.

seems to be a trend (NJ board)

edited, decided I was just being cranky
It's counter productive when people post some statement as the subject line - like "wow-best ever" - instead of the restaurant name/location. I want the option to skip reading about someplace that's 2 hours away. I know some people "might" want to read every single post, but having to wade thru an entire post to find the restaurant name and location (which isn't even always given) annoys me.
Felt like I had to vent, since it seems to be happening a LOT recently on the NJ board.
Do you (admins) send emails to posters to ask them to edit when critical info is missing? There was one post that when I posted a reply to ask for name/location, I saw my post deleted and the missing info had been added.

Spice Terminal closed

have read that they are lining up another spice purveyor, but it's a couple of months away

corn and black bean salad

I make it similarly, but instead of bell pepper I throw in cubed avocado (mix gently so it doesn't mush in).

Underwood Brisling Sardines in Mustard Sauce?

tried Seasons skinless/boneless sardines in olive oil, no salt added.

Very nice firm texture, 3 whole fish/tin. Flavor reminiscent of canned tuna. I had a piece of one straight out of the can to try it first, then had them as a sandwich with some mustard. Obviously, I can concur that sardines get a bad rap. I would eat them again. Unfortunately for kitty, I ate it in the kitchen at work, so no fishy oil for her. No danger of stinking out my work mates, our kitchen is in the warehouse in the back of the building!
Edit to add: 2 hours later, I'm experiencing fishy burps, which isn't the best.

Who uses ketchup on home-made Mac & Cheese?

similarly...won't put catsup on mac-n-cheese, except for FRIED mac-n-cheese, it adds another trashy layer to this so wrong/yet so delicious snack.

Underwood Brisling Sardines in Mustard Sauce?

thanks, monolith. I'm sure the kitty will do her happy-fishy food dance if I try them!

Terrible Service--Bland Tasteless Food

you might want to edit this to include the location of the restaurant

Paletas Betty (Chandler and Tempe)

went to the Tempe location in October while in the area on vacation, I had (IIRC) something like bananas foster, it was a roasted banana pop. Very tasty, and rich with dense fruit, not like how people think of "ice pops", more like a solid sorbet.

Harris Teeter Organic Moroccan Lentil/Chickpea Soup

Wegmans supermarket has one also, Moroccan Lentil with Chick Peas Soup, if you go to their website they have the recipe. Not sure if the flavor is the same as the one you love (this one uses a noticeable amt of cinnamon), but I love this one!

what do you have in your kitchen "junk drawer"?

One "junk" drawer 12"w. Has plastic divider thing in it to hold scissors, clips (for bags), scotch tape, postage stamps, small tape measure, greeting cards (1-2 birthday, 1 sympathy), big fat black marker (for marking boxes) and finer point Sharpie (for marking freezer bags), twist ties and rubberbands, one extra knob for kitchen cabinets, rubber door stopper, replacement mesh strainer for sink, self adhesive return address labels, coupons and local resto menus.
Have a bowl on top of the ledge that runs around the kitchen sink area, near the junk drawer, that holds larger junk items like lint roller, shipping tape, cough drops, pocket calculator, pens... So it spreads beyond the confines of the drawer.

Underwood Brisling Sardines in Mustard Sauce?

I've never had sardines (Grandpa loved 'em) and thinking of trying them. Figured maybe to start on a nice sturdy crackerbread?
1) rec for a sardine newbie (brand/flavor)
2) errr...how fishy are they (stupid question, but they do have a bad rep) - FYI, I do like picked herring, so I'm not adverse to "fishy" fish
3) once opened, how long can I store leftovers (in a glass container in fridge)?

Portion control at a dinner party

I quickly realized after hosting my husband's family the 1st time that whatever "normal" portions are, they eat close to 2x. I round up on quantities and consider leftovers my reward for 2 days of cooking. It's nice to have overflowing platters for the guests, but my dirty little secret is that I like to know I won't have to cook for a couple of days after!

Do bananas continue to ripen once "opened"?

try putting the peel back in place and wrapping the split peel area in saran to keep the air out...or go an alternate route, wrap the whole thing in foil and roast it!

Hunted Deer

I thought I heard a co-worker who hunts deer regularly say that he gets about 20 lbs of meat from the average animal - does that sound correct?
He also told me that there's a fair amount of meat that is not useable which surrounds the area where the bullet/buckshot/arrow hits.
I was surprised, based on how large deer seem to be, to find out how much winds up not being useable.

Hospital Food Gift

I'm sorry I can't help with a source, but having a mother-in-law who is in and out of the hospital frequently (and who got a MERSA infection), I wouldn't touch any unwrapped food with a ten foot pole. It's not a good environment for food. If you do bring something, for sure make it something that has individually wrapped components (I know I've seen cookie/brownie gift baskets where they are individually wrapped, or some kind of trail mix/nut/dried fruit basket where they package 1oz individual portions).

What's your "Subway" sandwich?

The tuna isn't overly mayo'd, which is kind of surprising... I get it with lettuce, tomato, pickles, sweet peppers, and honey dijon dressing. At least that gives me a little crunch of veg.
