Best of Orlando - January 2013

SS, is the ownership/staff of Thai Silk the same? That was a great "change of pace" place for me.

Don't know why I make it "so much fun for us", but I sure enjoy all the recommendations you folks make to us visitors. It makes it a whole lot easier to decide where to go once we've tried a couple of your recommendations and understand that we like what you like!!!

The one thing I still haven't gotten a good find for is pizza. I really don't like coal-fired pizza, so Anthony's is not the answer for me.

My "have-to" place this year is Yellow Dog Eats.

Best of Orlando - January 2013

Sam, Sister, and BBVL - you all make my annual trip to the Orlando area so much more enjoyable. Thank You!!!! I look forward to finding the annual recommendations and seeing what's new each year, or what's left over from the previous year that I wasn't able to get to. I just dicovered this year's edition so I'll be checking it out for the next week or so preceeding my trip south. Can't wait to try some of the new places and get back to a few from prior years - Pio Pio, K, Ravenous Pig and Red Bamboo, to name a few favorites.

Orlando area top 10 - February 2012

I come back to this post annually, a couple of months before I drive away from PA, heading for the warmth of Orlando. Can't wait to see what Sam and the Sister have to recommend that I've never been to before. I also like to know that some of my favorites are still open - Ravenous Pig, Pio Pio, Cedars, K, Anatolia, Red Bamboo, etc. It sounds like I'll be trying to get into Cask & Larder and Border Grill and I DEFINITELY will get to Yellow Dog Eats before I return home in April. Thanks for keeping this post going. I guess I should be looking a new one for 2013???

Cedar's is one of my favorites. I really like the Bemieh and the Baked Kibbi. I'm just about to head back to PA after a month here. Didn't make it to the Ravenous Pig, but did take your tip on Pio Pio. You're right about the chicken and I also like the pork chops. Red Bamboo was as good as always and Anatolia never disappoints. I also tried 4 Rivers for the first time and had their amazing brisket. Still looking for a good fresh fish place. It's surprising that there isn't one here considering the proximity to the ocean and the gulf.

I'm looking forward to coming back next year and checking out the Top 10 of 2013! Thanks for the great info everyone!! Oh, and cheesesteak is correct, if you're going to Philly you have to go to the Reading Terminal Market.

Sandwich Sis - I'm not surprised that your husband enjoyed Anatolia. Having eaten in Istanbul, I would have been very surprised if he didn't like it. You didn't mention what you thought of the place?

BBVL - I had read some things about banh mi before, but that Orlando Weekly article was really informative. My first thought was "this is the Vietnamese version of the Philly Hoagie", where we look for great bread and a nice balance of meat/cheese to veggies, and good olive oil. I'm gonna have to give Boston Bakery a try for lunch before I head back home at the end of the month. Thanks for the explanation and the link to the article. Very helpful.

Sarasota & Clearwater recommendations please

Nondescript strip malls in Fl have some great food places. I had a really good lunch last year at Mid Peninsula Seafood on the way to a Phillies spring training game in Clearwater. This time I'm just exploring state parks and beaches. Is Keegan's a good dinner spot?

Sam, there a very few Vietnamese places in the far north & west suburbs of Philadelphia. I'm familiar with Pho and enjoy it. However, other than some of the rolls, I'm not knowledgeable at all about Viet cuisine. What would you suggest to get me started - to help all little, I like Thai, Chinese, Japanese and what little Korean I've tried - I really don't like sweet coconut curries.

Sarasota & Clearwater recommendations please

I'm on my annual trip to Orlando and have decided to head over to Sarasota for a day of exploring in the parks and gardens. I'll be staying overnight in Clearwater and heading to Honeymoon Island the next day for some more adventures, then back to Orlando. I've never been to the west coast of Fl (other than to take in a couple of Phillies spring training games) so I'm looking for some help with lunch & dinner. I'm good with just about anything except Indian cuisine.

I was not impressed with Bosphorous. I lived in Istanbul for 18 months (USAF) and I think Anatolia is more like what I ate there. I can't point to a specific dish because I enjoyed everything I ordered. The other difference-maker for me was, as a lone diner, I was not ignored at Anatolia, as I was at Bosphorous, to the point of having to get up and walk to the host/hostess station to ask for my check!!

I was here last year and took recommendations (primarily) from Sam, BBVL, and Sandwich Sister. I was not disappointed by anything any of them suggested. I'm back to spend Feb. here and I'm definitely heading back to places like the Pig, Anatolia, Cedars, K and Crooked Spoon. I'm ready to try a few others on these lists and will definitely post a trip report in early March.

It's the poster's first time on any board. I guess he/'she isn't used to giving a lot of useful info. Maybe if he/she looks at this thread again sometime some info regarding location and pricing might appear. Sure would be helpful!

What's for Holiday dinner 2011?

Family voted for ham, so I've got a 10 lb. smoked shank in the frig. They also voted for "baked". Now looking for some good sides. Suggestions from the CHs out there?

What's for Holiday dinner 2011?

We'd been eating turkey for Christmas for my entire life - I'm retired! Last year I made brisket. This year I'm looking for something else. Thinking about roast pork or maybe a ham, but not all that thrilled with the idea of a ham. Prime rib is not an option in this family -we're not steak eaters. Part of the problem is picky grandchildren (and a picky grown child). Goose will not fly (pun intended) with this gaggle! Any ideas from the CH crew?

According to Congress, pizza is a vegetable

You're absolutely correct about not assuming that every school is alike. If anyone believes that is true, they also believe in the tooth fairy and that what goes in Congress is "the will of the people"! I live in the Philadelphia area. Go to a city school in the north or west section of the city and see what their lunches look like - these are areas of high unemployment, low education and a lot of crime vs. areas in the southern part of the city that are, generally, white and Asian, where the opposite is the norm. Then go to the western suburbs, which are more like the north and west sections of the city vs. the northern suburbs which are more affluent, higher education, more costly homes, higher school taxes, etc. The food in the school cafeterias is vastly different. I'd venture to say that this is what you'll find across the entire country. There is no way you can lump all of the school districts in America into a group and say they're all alike. It's impossible to believe that what happens in a state like Montana, with a small population is akin to what's happening in north Philadelphia.

Orlando seafood

Good luck with that! I tried to get recommendations on the same topic last year and was told that it's one of Orlando's restaurant wastelands - no fresh seafood restaurants in Orlando!! I found the best fresh fish at the Ravenous Pig in Winter Park, and I doubt that it was locally-sourced. If you find something that fits, please post it so the rest of us can patronize the place.

And don't leave out Coca-Cola who made sure that sodas were continued as part of school lunches so that we could continue to have the most obese children in the world! One more reason to ban all people who ever hold political office from becoming lobbyists.

Orange Lake Resort - Kissimmee, near Animal Kingdom

Why are you limiting yourself to a 15 minute drive? You're only 25-30 minutes from Orlando restaurants. Check the Orlando restaurants on this board, there are plenty of them!

New Wegman's coming to Montgomery Mall

Zombie shoppers also frequent Costco. They're the people who creep along, with "Costco eyes", looking at nearly every item in the store as if they've never seen this kind of merchandise before. They cause significant backups!

Where to eat in the West Palm Beach area on Christmas

I'm not familiar with the WPB area but, if it's like every other place in the US Christmas day, your best bet is to find a really good Chinese restaurant. That's become our traditional Christmas day lunch because there's nothing else open in the area of SE PA where we live.
