Fancy Brunch in Northern Suburbs for 60th Birthday Celebration
The Sunday brunch at Allgauers in Northbrook is pretty nice.
Breakfast place near or east of White House
Thanks--Cafe du Parc looks nice but maybe too expensive for breakfast. Breadline Id like to try but trying to avoid going west.
Breakfast place near or east of White House
Going from early White House tour to the Police Memorial, possibly on foot, or walk to Metro Center and take Metro to Judiciary Square...looking for a place to eat a decent breakfast somewhere in there. I know Old Ebbitt is close by--what else?
Other plans for breakfast othe rmornings are Teaism, Kramerbooks, Founding Farmers, Firefly, as examples, thanks.

Recommendations near International Trade Center?
Thanks, checked the new to sticky and not really finding transportation stuff. Went to the Metro site, and seems like its the Circulator to the 34 or 36 bus? Anyone know if thats right/fastest, or can direct me to transpo info in the sticky?
uh oh-- Oyamel AND Jaleo??
Im thinking also of dropping Oyamel. Maybe for Againn (and I have a Groupon), Matchbox, Arcadiana, Central, or ha maybe Ollies Trolley.

uh oh-- Oyamel AND Jaleo??
I have a dinner reservation for Jaleo and also a lunch reservation for Oyamel. Am I double-dipping into a well of similar cuisine? Or are they different enough that it is worth going to both?
Oyamel lunch in area between Spy Musuem and the Capitol. Jaleo in area for a very early dinner on a Sundeay before a Segway tour. So hours, location, and no dress clothes matter.
Recommendations near International Trade Center?
Thanks, we will be there on Sept 12, so I think they will be back by then. Is that a very long walk, or doable in 15 mins or so?
Recommendations near International Trade Center?
Stuck this question here.... eating at Oyamel 1pm before Capitol tour at 3pm. Finding directions showed some roundabout way down E..wouldnt it be ok to walk east on Pennsylvania then wind around to the visitor center? Any better way to go short of a taxi? Thanks.
Revamped schedule--place near 9th/G
Revamping our schedule a little, now doing a 6pm Segway tour starting at 9th/G. So - dinner nearby. My first thought is Proof or PS7s, but clothes wise we will be doing a very informal thing after, so that might be no good. Also need a place open before 5pm so we have time to eat and get to the place. Right now maybe: Matchbox, Gordon Biersch, Legal Seafood or Againn...
Thoughts? thanks.

Thanks--these are all some really good suggestions. Im going to tweak things and see what happens.
Working on lunches now....
Steve- were from Chicago (technically suburbs outside), so not recently off the turnip truck. My husband will eat anything and likes spicy, Im more conservative and not into spicy. Neither wants Indian, and while I see its highly touted in your fair city, will pass on the Ethiopian also....
Not set on Pizza Paradiso at all, or in fact, pizza per se. Saw it was close to the hotel (Palomar), and thought itd fit a night of less expensive places. I think Hanks might be better all around.
Just looked at PS7 and it does look good. Proof also, but farther than I wanted to travel for dinner. Not sure why Im against venturing too far from our hotel area for dinner--lazy and would be jumping back on the Metro I guess. But again, not firmly set on that.
Cowgirl creamery - cant find a menu showing the sandwiches, just cheeses...Pauls looks very good. Maybe switch off Oyamel to that, not sure.
Keep it coming!

Working on lunches now....
Thanks all--chow hounds have never failed me, which is why I rely on all your good advice!
I have thought about Proof, it was on the long list, not sure why it didnt make the short- will have to recheck the menu and see. Breadline sounds good. I do need to check the food truck thing some more maybe- the Lobster truck I know sounds excellent, have to figure out how to track it. Also have to look more at Matchbox or Cowgirl. Guess Im not set in stone on Oyamel- just read so much about it/him on the boards and seems like a good way to get in a meal there.
Working on lunches now....
Well thats all fairly awful. Note, Friday we will be gone by lunchtime. Dont plan to be around DPC around lunches, to save time. Not interested in Indian food... Dont want to have to travel too far back away from hotel area for dinners, tho, that is doable.
So round 2-- other dinner ideas besides some of these maybe not great choices? Looked at PS7, and a few others--dont mind spending but dont want to break the bank, or have to bring a dinner jacket.

sorry, I should have said: won't have a car. Will be using Metro and maybe one of the hop on/hop off things. Have heard alot about Ray's = not sure it's doable tho.
Working on lunches now....
Will be in town 9/11-16. Staying near Dupont Circle.
So far the plan is (we get to town early afternoon)--
Dinners: Sunday-- Birch and Barley
Monday--open, either Tabard Inn, Pizza Paradiso or Hanks Oyster Bar
Tuesday--Restaurant Nora
Weds-- Blue Duck
Thurs-- Courderoy
A lunch ressie so far for Oyamel, Tues 1pm before 3pm Capitol tour.
Ressies made so far except for Monday.
Other lunches up in the air, will be near the monuments Monday
Tues is set, Weds near the Mall/American History Museum
Thurs somewhere after having done Arlington Cemetery in the morning, and possible Newseum in afternoon. Would rather not do hot dogs from a cart.
Besides Mitsitam, other ideas for a decent lunch?

Breakfasts Dupont Circle
Husband and I are coming to visit September 11-16. Just vacation, dates fell when we can get off work.
Staying at Palomar, Dupont Circle. Am slowly putting together a list of possible food places, it's overwhelming, but as usual the Chow community is a great help. I trawl the local Chicago board as well as other boards when we visit other places.
Anyway, I guess it'd be easiest for breakfast if we eat in the area of the hotel. We will be taking the Metro everywhere, and while I have a rough idea of our list of things to see it's not worked out day to day yet. Mostly waiting to hear about when our requested tour times will be granted.
So far for breakfast (4 possibly 5 meals) I have (in no order):
Kramerbooks
Luna Grill
Kate Leopold--out of the area but we might go down to see the canal
Teaism
Firefly
Tabard Inn
Le Pain Quotidian
Don't want to blow the budget on breakfast, as we will be eating nicer dinners and possibly lunches as well. Any thoughts on this list or other places near Dupont to check?
Thanks.... my annoying lunch and dinner lists to follow in the next few months.

Shanghai soup dumplings?
So to ask again the original question (will be in DC in Sept), no car, near downtown----- any place to get soup dumplings?? (IN DC itself). Sorry that looks like yelling but isnt :)
Chicago Restaurant Week - February 18-27, 2011
We did Mortons,Schaumburg last Friday for dinner. Were there early, 6pm. I think we were probably their first RW dinners. Had to ask specfically about the menu, but it was explained cheerfully. Thought it was a great bargain $33 for a very nice, perfectly cooked filet, huge house salad, nice side of potatoes, and creme brulee. Husband had similar, dessert was the mousse. A ton of food, great service. A good experience.
Did lunch today at Atwater, Geneva. $22 for salad, veal tenderloin with mashed potatoes and mousse. The salad not as billed (endive, cooked tomato, warm brie, nuts), it was endive, a teeny tiny triangle of cold brie, 2 or possibly 3 raw halved grape (not even cherry) tomatos, a nice but over dressed vineagrette. The rest of the meal was good, husband had salmon. Dessert a bit small, but it was lunch. The menu was offered when asked about it. Later I heard them offering it right away to other tables. Food good, would probably return.
Great Jewish Deli?
I'd have to agree with Kaufmans--I grew up in Skokie so it has always been our go to place. It's a little different now- who runs the counter on the bakery side, etc. But still the best place to pick up 'k-rations'...
If I get north I go to Max and Bennys. Best sit down around. Now if you want to talk wasteland---come out here to Algonquin. I would think a great deli place would clean up.
European near 16th/Harlem?
Eating a late lunch/ early dinner (3pm, 330?) on this Sunday near Waldheim Cemetery, Forest Park. Call it Harlem/16th.
Looking for 'European'---German, Polish, etc. Will be getting back on the Eisenhower after that west, ending in Elgin, so don't want to go much farther east or south if at all possible.
Soup Dumplings?
Thats ok, thought Id throw it out there.
On our list so far are June, Beaker and Flask, maybe Le Pig. Screen Door, food carts...Clyde Common possibly....
Soup Dumplings?
Coming to Portland in 2 weeks for a few days and am feverishly doing my food homework. Dawned on me that there might be a place to get xiao long bao (soup dumplings) somewhere? I'm from outside Chicago and the pickings are slim around here...
Did see a cart Asian Station that might???

Help with finding good Asian restaurants in the Barrington area (Thai, Indian, Japanese, etc)
Sagano is pretty good- standard sushi and cooked Japanese food. Parking is a little hairy but the food and service are good. If you go east into Palatine there are more options, including Sushi Ai at Euclid/Quentin, in the shopping center. Arlington Heights also has a Wildfish in downtown, right near Altthai. West into Crystal Lake is Wild Orchid, Thai, 6000 W Northwest Hwy. We have been there a few times and enjoyed it. Im not too Thai savvy so can't speak to it's quality compared to other locations, I just know the food is good.
Need recommendation for Shiva meal (doesn't have to be kosher)
I guess if it will be at the house all the above suggestions are good. My two cents is that we had a shiva for my Father in April at Maggiano's in Skokie, in Old Orchard. There wasn't a family house nearby that we could hold it at, so we did it there. They have several different size rooms, and a varied menu to choose from. We did pasta, chicken, salad, appetizers, desserts. Tables were set up, it was buffet style, we opted for a bar which was completely unused and they packaged the leftovers. The room was nice, they set up a table for some pictures, and piped in 40s style music. If you are looking for somewhere (not at home), I can recommend this place.
Memphis BBQ Question.............
We did BBQ Shop last week and loved it.
If they are going to Peabody for the ducks have them there at least half hour before the walk. We got there about 10 til and it was packed. We stood on the mezzanine and could see but they are pretty small from up there. Guess they're pretty small from everywhere, but get there early.
Done the research- how does this sound--Memphis in August
Ok, finally back from our trip. It was alot of fun, saw the local highlights, and boy was it ever hot. 95 degrees still at 8pm. I mean, hot!
The food was good tho:
On the way down from Illinois we stopped at 17th Street Bar and Grill in Marion. Offshoot of Mike Mills BBQ. Split the ribs and pulled pork, hush puppies and slaw. All good, 3.5 out of 5...Not spicy, the hush puppies were quite standard, the pork was very tender.
That night we ate at Soul Fish, in Memphis, the midtown location. We really enjoyed it. I had the catfish basket, fresh tomato slices, fries. My husband had the blackened tilapia, tomatoes, warm Cajun slaw, hush puppies. Very fresh fish, nice tomato preparation with salt and vinegar, the warm slaw was really good. Hush puppies were the real, home made, not symetrical ball stuff. Tasty. I was hesitating about driving again for dinner or staying downtown for Flying Fish, but am really glad we went here. The area is kind of funky, too, pretty little houses all around.
The next day we did breakfast at Arcade. Sweet potato pancakes, eggs, biscuit and gravy, grits, bacon- great. We ate here a second time on our last morning. That time we got there right after it opened at 7am since we were hitting the road. She told us up front the grits weren't ready yet and the biscuits had about 10 minutes to go. Most of the food came shortly and was terrific again. The grits never did show up when we left about half hour later. I understand and appreciate the fresh preparations, but maybe start cooking so food is ready when you open? In any case, we really enjoyed both breakfasts here and highly highly recommend it as a must go place.
Lunch after Graceland was Uncle Lous. It is very near to Graceland, and I chickened (no pun intended ) out of Gus' because of the possible spice level. This was probably my favorite meal in Memphis. Best darn fried chicken I've ever had. I had wings and my husband the 3 piece, slaw and corn nuggets. We got half homestyle and half Sweet and Spicy Love mild. Should have gotten it all with the sauce. Sooooo good. After getting through the first snootfull of unexpected vinegariness we gobbled it downl. Husband kept commenting on how juicy it was. This was a terrific meal. Service was great, everyone was friendly, saw Lou, and food came fast.
Dinner was at Cozy Corner. Not alot to say. It was good- you have to expect chewy, not fall off the bone ribs. We were able to get cornish hen, tho we didnt get there till about 7pm. I thought they would be sold out but no. So that was very good, juicy, tender. Not a bad experience at all but probably 3d place of the total 4 we had bbq on the trip. 4th was 17th Street.
Breakfast on Saturday was Blue Plate downtown. Fun, cheerful place. Food was good. We had standard breakfast fare, eggs slightly over cooked, good biscuits, would return.
Lunch we ended up at Blues City Cafe, 2d and Beale. We were going to go to Central, but we were doing a city tour and had an hour stop on Beale street which I didnt expect, so we ate here. It was actually rated best downtown bbq by the tour guide, 2d was Rendezvous. These ribs were fall off the bone tender, good slaw and really good bbq sausage. That was a first for me and like Ive said, I dont do spicy, so I was wary, but- no, not spicy, just right. I was surprised at how good this place was considering it isnt usually mentioned in all the lists of must do bbq in Memphis etc, but I would recommend and return, especially if you are in downtown.
Dinner was BBQ Shop. Best we ate the whole trip. Split ribs half wet/half dry and bbq baloney sandwich. It was really, really good. I put the cole slaw on myself, being the food chicken that I am, got it on the side, and that just made the sandwich. Don't eat it without the cole slaw! The ribs were super tender, we got them with mild, and ended up putting more on also. Got the rib combo with pulled pork, and it was tender. A really good meal. Would return and rate it best bbq we ate on our trip.
Would return to Memphis again for more----but not in the summer!

What's good to eat near West Dundee?
In Dundee there is a Francescas on Rt72. Good, like the rest of them. Across the street from that is a brew pub thats pretty good as well. On Rt 31 south of Higgins a little farther west is Reginas--our current go to place for Italian. For Mexican there is a little place on Rt 72 a hair east of town on the north side that is terrific, El Faro.
Done the research- how does this sound--Memphis in August
Well we will be coming from the north so not then--have it semi scheduled for lunch the second day- looks like about a 20 minute drive? Or stay around and do Central??
