Fried Catfish

Well, that's a no brainer. A better deal and I can get some of that brisket to go.

Fried Catfish

Good answer. Granted, its damn near impossible for me to eat anything other than bbq if there is a smoker within range of my big ass nose.

Fried Catfish

17.25 for a 4 piece with pups and fries? They are certainly proud of their catfish.

Fried Catfish

Is the catfish at Slow Bone corn meal battered? That ruins my meal when the catfish gets delivered and it isn't cornmeal.

Fort Worth grocery cheapskates (and frugal epicureans)

I have no problem with women shopping in yoga pants but some ladies need to look in a mirror and realize that they are a privilege and not a right.

Must go in Fort Worth Texas ??? (Best steak, best BBQ, your favorites)

Do a google search on Bonnell's Fine Texas Cuisine. It is in Ft Worth and it just might be something you can tell your friends about when you get back to NY. Google that menu first, though. It ain't exactly chili and chicken fried steaks.

Since some people are doing "Where is the best"? Let's play where is the best Banh Mi?

My vote goes to Nammi. It may be a little more expensive but it is much larger than the usual banh mi and VERY tasty.

thefood truck craze

Ive tried a few of the food trucks. Gennarino's is my favorite. I don't know if they have ventured to Ft Worth or not. You can look them up on facebook for the menu. They have "small bites" that are almost baseball sized that include fried spaghetti, fried fettucine alfredo, and fried risotto. They are great, but I prefer their sandwiches. Their sunday gravy sandwich is like a gourmet meatball sub, and their porchetta is pretty aweome, too. Judging by the amount of times I see them ordered, people seem to love their nutella zepolle, but I dont have a sweet tooth at all so its not my thing.

Nammi truck has the best bahn mi that I have had in the dfw area. Its only 6 bucks and its big. My personal favorite is the bbq pork bahn mi.You can't go wrong buying a bahn mi from those guys.

I tried Ssahm BBQ once. People swear by their kimchi fries. I got them and they were pretty good, but to me they are no better than the ones at LA Burger that is right up the street. If it wasnt for that, I would hit Ssahm up again.

The last one that I have tried is SoCal Tacos. The dudes there were super friendly and helpful and they have great tacos. My only complaint is that their tacos are anywhere from 4 to 6 dollars a piece. And they are the same size as the tacos that you can get at a million taquerias in DFW for a buck to a buck and a half. They taste better than most, and the ingredients taste fresher than any taqueria that I have visited, but I don't know if they taste so much better that is justifies 5 bucks for one small taco. Actually, maybe they do but I am used to getting full from a meal of tacos for 4 or 5 bucks as opposed to spending 4 per when I can easily eat 3 or 4 of them in one sitting. 12 bucks is too much for a plate of 3 tacos for this guy.

Hope this helps.

CRAWFISH TIME! But where to get it?

The Bayou Market in Lewisville is my go to move. I would like them to be a little spicier, but at least the spice is cooked in the boil rather than sprinkled on after the fact like they do at Nates.

Where can I find the best fried chicken in DFW? 15 mile radius of Irving would be great!

My dislike for having to say effing instead of a true f bomb is only exceeded by my dislike of effing Babe's. And I don't know anyone that would pic Babe's over spicy Popeyes in an old school Pepsi challenge.

I have resigned myself to the fact that fried yardbird is kinda like bbq. Once you realize what you like, you will be hard pressed to find a restaurant that makes it better than you or someone in your family does. When people get all flustered over Babes, it makes me think that they led a life without knowing a grandmother. Or for that matter, never having a roommate that came home with a bucket of plain old KFC.

I will never understand why people give Babe's so much damn credit. I am a southern boy that has been eating fried chicken my entire life and I don't think Babe's can beat effing Popeye's in a taste test. I used to get better fried chicken at the deli at Albertson's before it closed down than I ever got at Babe's. I have gotten tastier fried chicken by ordering unflavored wings at chinese places. I just dont get the whole Babe's thing.

Chowhound from Philly needs recommendations very near the Hilton in Market Center

I can't believe that this person is asking about Texas bbq in the area and nobody has mentioned the Lockhart Smokehouse. It's in the same Bishop Arts district detailed above. Google it and go have the best brisket in Dallas. Just dont expect forks or sauce. Or a cheap meal. But its more Texas than the uppity Smoke.

Sonic 1/4 pound footlong chili cheesedog

Anyone tried this yet? They have had an "extra" long chili cheese dog on the menu for as long as I can remember. So why are they running a commercial about an "all new" dog? What is the difference?

Babe's Roanoke worth the drive?

You are right. I don't like Southern-style fried chicken. I LOVE it. I love it when its hot and I love it even more when I can dig some leftover fried chicken out of my fridge the next day and eat it cold. I just happen to think that Babe's fried chicken is highly overrated. I think people that love that place get more caught up in the atmosphere than the actual quality of the food. I find that strange because I hate the atmosphere when that place is crowded. The tables are so close that you could actually grab a roll off of the plate of a person two tables over. And don't get me started on the @ss in the face problem that arises when a large person at the next table over gets up to leave before you do.

My suggestion for anyone considering a trip to Babe's would be to go get a bucket of KFC and eat it on a couch that you are sharing with 8 people while watching an old episode of Hee-Haw.

Babe's Roanoke worth the drive?

I think Babe's is one of the most overrated places in dfw. Their fried chicken is not much better than the chicken you can get at an albertsons or krogers deli. The bottomless sides taste like they came fresh out of a giant can. Mix in the weird waitress song and dance routines and all that wood framing and its easy to imagine that you just crashed Sunday lunch at the old Davidian compound.

Anyone had any crawfish this season?

I was afraid of that. I was at Hooter's around 3 weeks ago and they had crawfish on the menu for a limited time only. All I can eat there is wings and I didnt trust a Hooter's boil, so I passed. The guy at the table beside me got a plate and they were tiny. I was hoping that was just Hooter's being a rip off. I guess not.

I may give the DFM a shot. Last year I went to the Bayou Market in Lewisville and the bugs were all at least 5-6 inches long. They are a lot closer to me so it wouldnt be too much trip if I go and they arent up to snuff. They spoiled me last year. I want each crawdad to have at least a true bite of meat in it.

Anyone had any crawfish this season?

Its almost Easter which means it's time for me to go to town on a few pounds of crawfish. Have any of you guys had any recently? I have read that the late freezes really hurt the harvest this year. Everyone that I talked to that had their boils during Mardi Gras said that the bugs are much smaller now than they were the same time last year. I was hoping that someone on here has purchased some in the last few weeks and could fill me in on the size of those suckers. The ones I bought last year were huge. Ive been thinking about those for the last couple of days and I can't wait to make a return trip. If they are as small as ive heard that they are, then I dont even know if its worth the trip. Thanks in advance for your help....

Good Pizza in S. Lewisville, Coppell, or N. Carrollton

I guess I am one of the few people that wasnt impressed with Cavalli Pizza. I mean, it tasted okay and the ingredients were very fresh but it just didnt do it for me. It was just too small and too light. When I eat pizza, I want to feel somewhat bloated afterwards. Like I dont need another meal for the rest of the day. I ate an entire Cavalli pizza and was still hungry when I was done. And no, Im not some huge fat guy. If it is a crappy chain pizza like Papa Johns I am usually pretty much stuffed after 3 slices. I think I could easily down 2 entire pizzas from Cavalli's in one sitting. At that price, its just not worth it to me.

If anyone is still lookin for pizza in that general area, New York Pizza and Pasta in Valley Ranch is pretty good. It was excellent a few years ago when Sal was still there. That dude made the best pizza that I have ever had. He sold that place and opened another joint in south irving by Northlake. The new owners still make a good pizza compared to everything else in the area, though. You might want to give them a shot. Or take a roadtrip to Sal's place off Walnut Hill in Irving and have your life forever changed. That man is a pizza artist.

Buffalo Wild Wings???

They are overpriced. Thats the main drawback for me. I do think that their wings are far superior to Wingstop in taste and size. I only go to Buffalo Wild when I am craving wings and need more of a sauce selection than the standard medium, hot, very hot, and nuclear. They have a pretty extensive list of flavors to chose from. I pretty much always get the asian zings. I could eat a mountain of those suckers. .

Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers -- Huh?

They just opened one of these down the street from me. I had to try it once. Having done that, I gotta say that I dont get it. I figured a chain that served only chicken fingers would have the most spectacular chicken fingers on the planet. They don't. They are no better than the chicken strips at the whataburger across the street. The dipping sauce tasted like a mix of thousand island and mayo with black pepper mixed in. The only thing that I truly enjoyed was the toast. Needless to say I won't be going back.

Nosh....

I will totally cosign on the Big Kahuna Cheesesteak. Its my favorite sandwich there. I really dig the jalapenos and all the extra cheese, onions, and mushrooms. Just don't get it if you are expecting a real Philly. Nothing compares to the real thing.

Domino's New Pizza

You are right on point, thirtyeyes. Pizzaria pizza is almost always better than the best chain. The thing is, there are occasions when chain pizza makes the most sense. When those occasions arise, thanks to the recent changes, Domino's will now be in the equation for me. Sure, its not as good as the chicken marsala or fried eggplant and ricotta pizza at Sal's up the street, but it sure beats the crap out of Papa John's in my book.

Domino's New Pizza

I tried it tonight. I went with a large supreme on original crust. It was only 11 bucks. I gotta say, it was a big upgrade from the old style. The crust, sauce, and ingredients were all much improved over the garbage that they previously offered. Its obviously not as good local pizzaria pizza is, but I would recommend it over Papa John's any day. Next time I find myself in a situation where chain pizza makes the most sense, I will go with Domino's. I never thought in a million years that I would say that.

Cooper's BBQ in FT. Worth?

I was just talking to a friend of mine that tried out the new Cooper's this past week for lunch. I guess he looked into one of the smokers a saw a pork chop that he had to try. When he got to the end of the line where you actually pay, he discovered that the chop was 21 dollars. I think that ruined his experience. His plan was to just get a brisket sandwich and then come back on the weekend for a full on bbq meal. But the chop got him and he paid dearly for it.

He did say that the chop was "delicious" and too big to finish. So thats a good sign.

Best Philly Cheesesteaks in DFW?

I have a Texidelphia less than half a mile from my place. I gave it 2 tries. They both sucked. It was flavorless and dry. The cheesesteak at IHOP is better than that place. Its not a good sign when you go for a cheesesteak and they ask you what kind of sauce that you want on it. Spicy mustard or marinara? No thanks. Just call it what is is. An arby's with sizzled meat on a longer roll.

Craziest Slurpee Flavors

There werent that many 7-11s in the Texas town that I grew up in. Almost every convenience store had an Icee machine that was pretty much the same as Slurpee machine. The Icees usually had 2 flavors to pick from. One was always Coke flavored and the other one usually rotated between cherry, grape, some blue colored flavor, etc. Funny thing was, as a high school kid, every flavor that I bought managed to taste alot like a whiskey drink or a vodka drink by the time we started drinking it. Gee, I wonder why? And the beauty of it was that nobody asked questions. As long as it was hot outside, we could go anywhere with an Icee that was 86 proof and nobody suspected a thing. The good ole days.

Best Philly Cheesesteaks in DFW?

Havent tried Fred's, but I'll cosign on what gavlist said about billedelphia. That the closest to the real thing that ive had around here. They ship in their bread and tastycakes from Philly. And they do em up cheese whiz style if thats what you dig. Its pretty much take out only, though. Unless you want to eat at one of the benches that they have right beside it. Im not sure, but I think that a few years ago they opened a dine in location in Arlington. I dont know if its still open and i seem to remember some people saying that it wasnt as good as the Bedford location.

BEST CHAIN CHEESESTEAKS?

I am with Dagwood. There is no substitute for the real thing. Since the original post is asking about good ones at a national chain, I will totally cosign on Jersey Mikes. Im not sure if the menu is nationwide or regional, but the one's here in Texas have a "big kahuna cheesesteak" that has grilled onions, green pepppers, mushrooms, jalapenos, and extra cheese. That is one tasty sandwich. Its my go to when I find myself thinking about heading out to a sandwich shop.

Best French Fries?

Its good to hear that someone likes them. Those things mess me up so bad that I can't even eat their regular fries because there is always one stray curly in the sack that taints the whole order. And one stray curly was not an intended pun, but it does fit come to think of it.
