R.I.P., Broadway Deli

I did like sitting at the bar on a Sunday brunch and ordering the Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon instead of Canadian bacon, and watching the games years ago but last few years were just dreadful.

Authentic regional Italian in L.A.?

This site sort of goes into the history of Italian food in America and explain why there aren't regional restaurants like you would have for Chinese or Mexican cuisines.

www.almostitalian.com

Easy assimilation into society without a lot of marginalization as Italian Americans prospered economically in the US led to standardization of Italian food menu. The proliferation of pizza parlors had something to do with it, but as I type this I am reminded of the movie Big Night and the reason is answered there plainly. Everybody just wanted spaghetti and meatballs and nothing else.

Argentinian Food

Do you know if the owners of El Gaucho are the same as Bambino's Bakery that used to be on Hawthorne next to El Pollo Inka? Their pastries and baked goods were better than Grand Casino's.

Cannolis on the Westside

The cannolis at Sorrento's are better than Bay Cities. I like the ones with the chocolate covered shells best.

Best Fish 'n Chips in LA?

I second the Britannia. Way better fish n chips. Took my English now ex-brother in law to both Britannia and King's Head when he first arrived in LA, He preferrred Britannia for fish n chips and atmosphere, called YOKH touristy but only thing he liked was that he could get his British food products there.

The Waffle -- worst restaurant experience EVER

I was curious to see what all the fuss was about and went to lunch on Thursday around 2pm to specifically avoid rush. I ordered a Caesar salad and the smothered hash browns. 3 other tables seated, one of them finished. It took 10 minutes for the salad, 13 for the hash bowns, the server didn't want me to wait for everything at once since I was getting antsy. The Caesar had butter lettuce mixed with romaine and big chunks of Parmesan, the dressing was OK. The smothered hash browns were good, not great and not worth the $9.00 tag. I sat at the counter so I could see the kitchen at work and its problem seems to be getting everybody in sync. Their timing is off. There is also the possibility of literally having too many cooks in the kitchen. You always overstaff when opening places, including the BOH, and too many bodies bumping into each other can throw off the cooking. Give the kitchen some weeks to develop their groove since there didn't seem to be much of a lead time to hire and really train the BOH between announcing the Waffle and opening it. Get the kitchen in order and the FOH staff will usually come in line also. A better kitchen in sync makes for a better FOH staff, unless they're totally clueless. Just so you know, I've worked in the restaurant/food industry for 25 years and have held every position in a restaurant/bar/gourmet retail food establishment, from bottom to top, both BOH(yeah I've worked the line in places similar to Waffle) and FOH, with the exception of owner. I've even worked with Scooter. I'll check back later and see if there's improvement.

Westside Dim Sum -- I Know, I Know

Used to be frequent patron number of years ago and loved it. Went back 2 weeks ago and noticed a big change since last visit, so ownership change makes sense. It was bad and will probably not go back again.

WLA: Hop Woo, da Pasquale, Hu's, El Rincon Criollo, Royal Star

Boyk, have you tried Little Hong Kong Cafe down the way on Sawtelle? Great lunch deals and food. Besides Royal Star, I know of only one other SGV style place long ago that tried to replicate its success on Westside(Lincoln south of Washington next to Del Taco) and they didn't make it either. SGV places don't have more expensive Westside rents and Westside taste buds are geared more towards Chin Chin or PF Chang's. Another place to try is Singapore Express at Lincoln and Maxella.

I've always had a good meal at Rincon Criollo also.

Great Chinese Food on the Westside

I second Little Hong Kong Cafe, eat there all the time for years, just had a recent makeover. You can also try VIP Harbor Seafood on northside of Wilshire at Barrington. We're usually the only non-Chinese when we eat there, if that's any indication.

any good sichuan on the westside?

It might be too far away from you in Brentwood, but Shechuan(sp?) Restaurant on Sepulveda in Manhattan Beach is very good. They are same family that owns Shechuan Res in Torrance on Hawthorne blvd south of Del Amo Mall.

For Nosh: The Philly West Burger

The Chinese place is closed. Drove up Sepulveda today and they were gutting it. The sushi place across the street is good though.

Tea Houses and Loose Tea

Tudor House is SM tea room on 2nd just down from Broadway. I think they're owned by Ye Olde King's Head owners since they have British specialties retail shop also at YOKH. Check them out.

recommendation needed: best place to buy fresh fish in l.a. - pref in ktown, grove, hollywood area?

I don't know of any places in the areas you've stated, but Santa Monica Seafood on Colorado at 12th is great. In Little Tokyo go to Mitsuwa Market. There's also a place on Alameda St. south of downtown , close to the American Apparel building that's really good.

Berri's Cafe in Playa del Rey

I'm picking up my parents at LAX soon and looking for place nearby for post-flight meal since they can't make it to the Valley to eat. Looked up places close to LAX and this place came up. Anybody have any comments for this place?

Bay Cities vs. Claro's Italian Sandwich

I go to Sorrento's for the fresh pastries and some sandwiches only because where else are you going to get a large veal parm for 4.95. And because I live behind them. Their produce, which comes from their own farm, is seasonal but OK. Their wine prices are horrible($19 for a bottle I can get at BC for $9) and some of the products on the shelves have been on there for years. Haven't been to Claro's so can't compare, like BC sandwiches other than GM and get other products there cheaper than at Surfas. I'm Italian from St. Louis, so partial to Amighetti's special and Imo's pizza.
