Private Dining for marriage proposal

No view, but Elite Cafe on Fillmore has pretty private booths

Good vacation rental where I can roast a pig outside?

How many people? And what's the budget? You might try the Druids Hall in Point Reyes Station. A friend of mine rented it for her wedding and some people stayed there over night. It's a really beautiful spot

Best Croissant in SF/Bay Area?

Oh, I love the croissants at Neighbor Bakehouse. Especially the one with seeds and a thin layer of cream cheese. And I've never had anything but really friendly service. We usually go early on Sunday morning. It seems like the people working there are always very patiently describing each and everything on offer, to each and every person. Different strokes, I guess...

Best Sandwich in Berkeley?

I put mustard on BLTs. As a native Californian, I wonder where the "sandwich experts" are born? Is sandwich making taught in schools in other states?

Is tipping now a insult to waitpeople w/new living wage pay hike?

Ah, no. The vocal minority is ruling the press. The majority of wait-people still live on tips. And the majority don't recieve a much of a paycheck because the tax from their tips negates it.

Takeout ideas for bar party (San Francisco)

I saw someone with catering platters from Ali Baba's headed to Dolores Park one time that looked great. Hummus, salads, pitas, tabbouleh, shawarma meats. Can't be all that expensive, and can feed carnivores and veg/vegans too

Where can I find aji amarillo?

If you're in SF, Casa Lucaz in the Excelsior has them in jars, whole and paste. They might even have them frozen.

"Non-traditional" sit-down breakfast places in SF

I'd love to hear if anyone has been recently to ANZU for the breakfast buffet. We've considered going a few times because we love Japanese breakfast, but haven't made it happen

Best dim sum for group of 40?

I made a reservation at Ton Kiang after my wedding. I got married at Lands End. There were 25 of us. I'm pretty sure Canton will make a reservation for a large group, too. I don't know about Yank Sing, but I'd call them too.

Cashew cookies for Chinese New Year?

I ended up making some cookies very similar to these.

They are pretty tasty. A little dry, but delicious with tea. Really nutty. Not too sweet. I'll definitely make them again

Cashew cookies for Chinese New Year?

Here's my dilemma: Our Chinese landlord's elderly mother lives in an in-law apartment off our garage. We've lived here for five years and every year for Chinese New Year she brings us all sorts of gifts. Cookies, roasted pork, red envelopes for our daughter, the most delicious sesame coconut wonton things. I never know what to give her in return. After some internet research, I've settled on making some cashew cookies for her. Anybody have any tips or great recipes they can aim me towards?

Sausalito – Fine Dining – Murray Circle

If you've been there before and enjoyed it, I certainly wouldn't knock it out of rotation in response to a Valentine's dinner. V-day is THE WORST day of the year to go out. Almost always a total rip-off. Restaurants that don't normally offer prix fixe menus do it on that night and often don't do it well. People go in to restaurants with crazy, built up romantic ideas so everyone is on edge. None of the servers want to be there. The owner of the place sees it as a cash cow. Just a recipe for disappointment all around. Go back on a normal weeknight and enjoy yourself. You'll be happy you did.

La Nebbia from owners of La Ciccia (Noe Valley, SF)

Who is the new chef? I was under the impression that Massimo from La Ciccia was chef/owner. Are there any big changes to the menu as a result?

Best Bar Steak in SF ?

That was my first thought. I've never actually had a steak at the bar. I always get steak tartare and fried mushrooms. It's a real one, two punch! And a martini. But I know they do serve steak at the bar. Love that place!

Your Favorite $5 or under bites in San Francisco

I know you mention the buns at Wing Lee, but their jook is a great snack too. I think the price is $3.00 for a bowl, chicken and mushroom or pork and 1000 yr egg. Rich and delicious.

NEW: Neighbor Bakehouse in the Dogpatch, SF

Good stuff! My daughters and I stopped in last Saturday morning after the Alemany Farmers Market. We got a chocolate croissant, an "everything" croissant, a savory pastry with sauerkraut, cheese and roasted peppers and a savory pastry with mushrooms, Asiago and green onions. Everything was great. Our favorites were the chocolate("Mom, this is DARK chocolate!") and the sauerkraut. The bread/pastry is amazing! Perfectly crispy with a tiny bit of chew. I know they've just started with retail, but they're on the right track as far as service goes. Totally friendly and patient. They had no descriptions or prices posted, so they had to repeat themselves a lot. Bare bones operation, but who cares, when the product is so delicious. I can't wait to try more

Trying to find Kaiser rolls

Maybe not as hard as the traditional ones (I've never had one of these sandwiches), but you might try looking at a Safeway that has a bakery. They make rolls that look like that. I'm sure I'll get poo-pooed for recommending the Safeway bakery...

US geography game : Bay Area restaurant edition

I was wondering about that. Seems weird. I love Lee's sandwiches. Especially in comparison to the over stuffed ones at Saigon Sandwiches. But I didn't ever think that they were native to San Jose. I know the chain started there, but... Hmm, hopefully Melanie will elaborate.

Nice Restaurants that are baby friendly

They are really nice and the food is great at La Ciccia. Unfortunately, they didn't have high chairs when we lived around the corner with our daughter. We always brought our own. You may want to call ahead to see if that has changed.
