Steak tartare

I love to sit at the bar at Harris' and order a martini and steak tartare. Classic steak house vibe. Great martinis.

where can I find the best local strawberries?

You're probably thinking of Tomatero Farm. They had a variety called Rosa or Rosas on Saturday that were amazing. Pretty much everything they grow is delicious.

Muffuletta Olive Salad.

I bought some Central Grocery brand from Calabria Bros. on 17th in SF a while ago. They have since moved to Mission Street in the Excelsior. I recall it being really expensive, but less than flying to New Orleans for my fix.

Just moved to San Mateo and loving the ramen joints there. I need suggestions on where to go next!

Himawari. I always get the shio and my husband gets the tantan men. Always add an egg. Their eggs are delicious. We went to Santa recently and they should be ashamed of their nasty overcooked eggs.

Dishes w/ tongue in the Bay Area

You can buy corned tongue from Robert's Corned Meats in SOMA and cook your own if you're up for it. I've done it a couple of times and it was delicious.

Sources for andouille?

I live in San Francisco and I have ordered from Bailey's in LaPlace a few times. Delicious stuff. I ordered my New Orleans-born husband a box of andouille and chicken andouille for our anniversary last year. (We both benefit from that gift!) My sister-in-law introduced us to the chicken andouille a few years ago. We were skeptical, but it's awesome. We try to go to LaPlace and stock up on Tasso and regular andouille when we go home for a visit, but had never bought the chicken. If you're ordering, have them throw in a couple of extra sticks of the chicken. Just grill and eat. The regular is best used in dishes, in my unprofessional opinion.

where to find star funghi porcini bouillon cubes?

I bought them at Far West Funghi in the Ferry Plaza quite a while ago. Don't know if they still carry them or not.

Muffaletta Bread

We always use an Acme Green Onion Slab. Sometimes an Herb Slab if we can't get to the Ferry Plaza. It's not the same, but it holds up to the olive relish.

Canton Dim Sum or Yank Sing (Stevenson)? [San Francisco]

We usually go to Koi Palace and I can take or leave the tripe there. My husband likes it and I usually have a bite or two. We actually discussed ordering a second order at Canton because our 5 year old daughter took a shine to it as well.

Canton Dim Sum or Yank Sing (Stevenson)? [San Francisco]

We went to Canton yesterday morning and had delicious tripe. It said "broiled tripe" on the menu and it definitely tasted smokey, while still being super tender from braising. Everything else we had was good to great, with the exception of some pretty thick, doughy skins on the potstickers.

Kingdom of Dumpling on Noriega Moving [San Francisco]

I buy their pork and shrimp wontons often to keep in the freezer for a quick and delicious dinner. They always keep their shape, which is a pet peeve of mine when cooking frozen wontons. We've tried a couple of the other flavors of wontons (chicken & spinach and another one I can't quite remember) but we like the pork and shrimp the best.

Croissants - SF Dish of the Month February 2014

Oh, my daughter and I shared a croissant from Sandbox last Saturday and it was excellent. We were covered in delicate shards of the layers which I consider a good sign.

Crown Prince or similar canned anchovies 5/10/12-pack cheap?

Yes, I have found that too. They didn't have any at Smart and Final on Bayshore either. I miss buying them at Costco.

Do any of you guys ever bring your own Chopsticks into Chinese Restaurants/Buffets?

I carry a pair of wood chopsticks in my purse for my 5 year old daughter. We eat pho and dim sum often and the plastic ones are too slippery for her. When she was littler I had a special pair of kid's chopsticks and a small pair of scissors to cut up noodles and dumplings.

Thanksgiving San Francisco 2013: Open restaurants

I have been to Tommy's on Thanksgiving. It's packed! We were just there for drinks, but the line for dinner wrapped all the way around the dining room. Very festive crowd

Where's the soul stirring Caldo de Pollo in the S. F. Bay area?

How long has it been since you were there? We used to go all the time, but hadn't been in a couple of years, until recently. We went on a Sunday morning. My chicken soup(my normal order)was terrible. Watery broth, dirty unpeeled vegetables and we had to ask for chopped onion and cilantro. Sad. We have started going to San Jalisco on S. Van Ness. Great service, great soup, great atmosphere.

chowhound family that likes adventure with great foodie places

Taqueria Vallarta has great street style tacos and a nice array of salsas. I love their habanero sauce. If you're game try the lengua tacos. Delicious! Taqueria Cancun is more known for burritos, I think. I think Vallarta is more unique. I like the one on 24th the best.

There's a "16 Mile House" in Millbrae. I think the mile markers were on the highway that originally followed El Camino Real.

I always get the lengua tacos at the Toynayense trucks in the Mission. Also, the lengua tacos at Taqueria Vallerta on 24th near Harrison has great ones from the "vapor" thing.

Cysna is a genius :0)

On Irving between 22nd and 23rd is Irving Cafe and Deli for good banh mi. I always get BBQ chicken with pâté, but the have all the usual suspects.
Also on Irving at about 24/25th is Lam Hoa Thuan. There is always a line of people waiting to get BBQ pork and roast duck and pork. I eat there and get their House Special wonton egg noodle soup. My daughter and I just shared a bowl yesterday. And don't forget to have some of the pickled chilis on the table. Yum!

On Clement between 8th and 9th is Good Luck Dim Sum. Really good, cheap, counter-order dim sum. I love their shrimp dumplings (har gow), pan-fried shrimp and chive dumplings and their fun kor. There's always a line, but it goes pretty quickly.

Hot Italian (pizza, salad, weekend brunch), Emeryville Public Market - any reports?

I never saw chili flakes in my travels around Italy. Just that delicious chili oil. I will say, I prefer the chili flakes on my pizza, but if the chili oil is as good as the ones I got in Italy I would be happy. It is just never as good. And yes I have tried to make my own from dried peppers.

Larkin St Turtle Tower Reopens (SF)

We went in early Sunday morning 6/2 at about 8:45. Not many other diners, but they slowly trickled in as we were finishing. Pho just as good as always except a little slower coming out. Oh well, we weren't in a hurry. Obviously working out the kinks. I had pho ga (oh that broth!) and DH had #2 pho with everything. They did add the banh mi that they have on the menu at the one on Geary and the one in SOMA, but we didn't try it. We had been underwhelmed by the sandwiches from the SOMA branch. So happy to have our Sunday morning breakfast spot back. Who needs omelets and potatoes? I can make that at home.
