Junior Masterchef Australia 2011

I know! The US Masterchef is such a disappointment. The winner cooks stuff the rejects from Masterchef AUS manage to cook and do it even better.

Indian in Des Moines?

We went to Namaste India today and it was wonderful! We shared a couple of appetizers - hummus and naan, and paneer pakora. The hummus was definitely my favorite. I had the butter chicken as my main but though I did order it mild, it was still pretty spicy to me, but it isn't their fault. I have a very low tolerance for spice. I ate it with plenty of rice and an order of plain naan. Seriously, I could make a meal of the naan alone, with plenty of hummus. I'll definitely be back to try some other things, spicy or not! I enjoyed it very much and so did my two companions.

Indian in Des Moines?

Thank you, and to jds1212, two votes of confidence does it for me! I think we'll try Namaste India and for where we're going, it'll be easier to get to.

Indian in Des Moines?

I've done the Google search but I think I trust you guys more than Google!

I'm going to be in Des Moines in April with a couple of friends and I would like to give Indian food a try for the first time. I'm leaning towards India Star but I thought I'd get some input on other restaurants. I have nearly zero tolerance for spiciness while one of my friends loves spicy food, so the ability to graciously adjust spice to taste would be a big plus.

Any suggestions for what to try that would be mild would be great too. TIA!

Do people really (and I mean "really") like Girl Scout Cookies?

Someone else who remembers Juliets! I loved those with a PASSION and was sad to see them go.

Arctic Zero Ice Cream

I think it's better to have a small portion of what will really satisfy your craving than a pint of something that leaves you wanting.

In a testing situation, blind simply refers to not having knowledge. Not a reference to sight.

Really Crappy Unhealthy Disgusting Toe-curling Junkfood!

Ahhh, a sports concession stand favorite when I was in high school was similar. It was called a walking taco. They would crunch up an individual bag of Doritos, slit it down the side, and load in some taco meat. You then fixed it up with whatever condiments you chose and walked off with your taco :) I loved those things! A little too much.

Top Lines from Top Chef

Actually, that was at the seven deadly sins dinner :) He made a salmon/trout dish while on drugs for his emergency wisdom tooth extraction. And yes, I've watched this series way too much.

what kind of snack at 11pm

I like the whole grain and fruit bars (like a fig newton) that I get from an online company as a snack at night. Just one is enough! A little fruit, some whole grain, it's very satisfying.

No-Bake Holiday Treats for Kids ?

Buckeyes would be easy! It'd be great for the littler ones since it's just mixing, rolling into balls, then dip into chocolate. We always have them at Christmas.

"The Restaurant" or "Last Restaurant Standing" (as Americans call it)

I'd like to know why cocktails aren't part of Summer House's regular menu? That's what they seem to be best at! But when it comes to food...maybe they should stick to bartending. I'm sick of looking at scotch eggs.

As long as some of it goes towards relaxation techniques and quite possibly medication! lol

Cold, Dreary Weather food!

Had bean soup using our Thanksgiving ham bone last night. It was perfect for a snowy evening.

I love gyoza and I'll have to try making them now.

And fortunately they are cooking just for themselves and not for guests :D And hopefully the dog gets a tidbit! He's the host, after all.

I read the post about Depression era cooking and it reminded me of another channel I enjoy as well. Cooking with Dog focuses mainly on Japanese cooking. It's hilarious when they have an outtake at the end and the dog is adorable!

Rags and Riches will most definitely need somebody else running FoH. He improved in the last episode but I am still not convinced. Good lord, he was awful in previous episodes! Front Room has a decent cook who cares and FoH seems to be just fine. I suppose I have to root for them, with Barrington & Badger gone.

Ryan's Buffet: unbelievable deal for Sat. and Sun.

Ryan's was always the special occasion place in my family! I loved the rolls.

What's the #1 Thing That You Eat and Say, "Wow That REALLY Hit The Spot"?

Oatmeal with brown sugar and cinnamon. I don't have it all that often but when I do, it hits the spot and I wonder why I didn't have some sooner!

I was really sad that those two had to go :( I like the Front Room couple, but they seem not to be able to handle the pressure.

Jfood returns to Heartland (MSP) - Food a 10; Management/Owner a Zero

It's sad when a place with great food has terrible service :( I'm glad there are other places you like that have good service, though!

Jfood returns to Heartland (MSP) - Food a 10; Management/Owner a Zero

I agree with you. A bad situation stays a bad situation only if management allows it. I had an experience in a restaurant, my friend and I were seated then just sat for a good 10 minutes until the hostess noticed us. She was apologetic and sent over another server who was so friendly, cheerful and attentive, we forgot our initial annoyance at the service slip. The waitress treated us like gold! And we got free dessert. We still go there as often as we can because we are assured that if there is an issue, management is eager to fix it.

$100 weekly grocery allowance for two, what are some options for dinner?

One thing I can tell you is that if you do cook meat, think ahead. My roommate and I aren't hurting for money per se, we just happen to both have been raised to waste nothing lol If we have a roast one day, we save the leftovers and the broth and the next day it's beef and vegetable soup, heavy on the vegetables, and usually add in some kind of grain to help it stretch and have enough leftovers for lunch the next day. We can eat three meals on one 2lb or so roast. We like to make seasoned pulled pork for tacos. The next day, the leftovers turn into pork and black bean chili. We can bulk that up with more beans and serve over rice.

There's a lot of things you can do! Get ground pork or turkey instead of hamburger. Pork steak is really good, as long as you don't mind taking the effort to trim it up. It's very fatty. Try growing some stuff in the summer months, maybe? We completely neglect our tomato plants but we still end up with enough to freeze, and they do well in pots. Hmm...try Asian food. Soak some rice noodles. While they're soaking, saute garlic, carrots, onion, and shredded cabbage. At this point you can choose to add some chicken if you want, sometimes we use firm tofu. Add the noodles and season with soy sauce, and some fish sauce if you have it. It's simple but very good and it makes a whole lot of food for not a lot of money.
