best salted caramel ice cream in Toronto?
I've made this and it is amazing. Incredibly addictive!
Burger Stomper and Milkshake Bar - Danforth Ave
Yeah, I was pretty unimpressed by the response and the 1000 orders excuse. There were a fair number of people there last Saturday but I got the distinct impression that they were friends of the owners.
The Works is opening across from Square Boy, right?
Burger Stomper and Milkshake Bar - Danforth Ave
I went with the boyfriend last week for dinner. We both enjoyed our burgers but mine was cooked well past the medium that I ordered it. The toppings were good and they had excellent dill pickles on the burgers. A good amount of bacon on the burgers, as well. We both had bacon cheeseburgers and demolished them.
The service was friendly and they were happy to answer questions. I wish they had a list of all the toppings and sauces so I didn't have to ask a million questions.
The one sour note was the french fries. They were really thin, oily, and undercooked. Frankly, some were almost raw. It seemed like the oil wasn't hot enough when they were cooked. Someone (one of the owners I think) stopped by to ask for feedback and seemed rather offended by what I told him. He muttered something about "sending out 1000 orders that day" which was kind of annoying. Don't ask for feedback if you're not going to listen to what I'm saying.
We would go back for burgers but not the fries.
Favourite Cheap-and-Cheerful Indian?
Bombay Chowpatty is hilarious and the food is good. I went with the bf a few weeks ago. We had masala fries, samosa chaat and their version of a burger. It was all tasty and enjoyable.
Need help with Yorkville Dinner Recommendation
I was there in November for an impromptu late meal. The food was good and service was friendly. It was definitely one of my better yorkville dining experiences. I had the steak and it was a delicious piece of meat that was perfectly cooked.
Off the Hook
Interesting. Well, hopefully they get more consistent with both service and food. We were waited on by two different guys the nights we were there. They were equally friendly and attentive.
Off the Hook
I've been twice now and had good meals both time. Had halibut the first time and sea bass the second; the fish was impeccably fresh both times but I did find the sea bass a little bit greasy. I like the variety of sauces and the sweet potato fries are really delicious.
Both times service was quick, friendly, and there were no bill issues in spite of the fact that we split the bill with another couple the second time. It's basically around the corner from me so I'll probably be back soon!
Honey lovers: where's your favorite honey?
I love buckwheat honey on good sourdough toast. Yum! I once had a bottle of chestnut honey that was also absolutely delicious.
Butternut squash!
My parents managed to give me an orange glow from insane beta-carotene intake when I was young. At least it was just his nose!
Dinner with bf and my parents
I recently went to F'amelia and was really disappointed. The pizza was delicious but somewhat lacking in toppings. Whatever you do, don't order the lasagne. My aunt had it and it was a giant pile of beef in a casserole basically. The service was lacking and the atmosphere was cold. Half of the table froze because we were by the windows and the other half baked because of an overly aggressive heater.
I would much rather go to Libretto on the Danforth.
Anywhere in Toronto come close to 48 cents/lb ($1.06/kg) for frozen basted turkey I paid in Buffalo?
They were also at the Carlaw and Gerrard location today.
Hooked Seafood - New fishmonger on Queen
I stopped by again this week to have another look and I still really unimpressed. The only thing that looked great was the tuna and that was just too expensive for me. I got totally spoiled living on the east coast but I expect fish to be glossy looking and smooth. Most of the stuff in the case looked like it had seen far better days.
Hooked Seafood - New fishmonger on Queen
Exactly. Especially not at a hefty price premium.
Hooked Seafood - New fishmonger on Queen
Yes I understand that prices are higher when dealing with sustainable harvesting and I fully respect that. I dealt with a fishmonger in Halifax for years who always made an effort to carry only sustainable fish.
The fillets were messy looking, the sections were separating as if they were very poorly fileted or not fresh. Fresh fish should be glossy and smooth and these were not.
Hooked Seafood - New fishmonger on Queen
I was in there during November and was not particularly impressed by what I saw. The prices seemed high and the fish looked rather torn up. I didn't buy anything but it didn't really make me want to go back either.
Foods that unreasonably gross you out...
I'm not quite that bad but I was also not raised in a barn like those two apparently were. I have never thrown a fit over my dislike. If something like a burger comes out with mayo I'll usually discard the bun and scrap off as much as possible. Especially at a nicer place - at McDonald's I'm sending that badboy back for a remake.
Foods that unreasonably gross you out...
I hate commercial mayo with the flaming passion of 1000 suns but I can eat a little bit of home-made mayo. It's better if it's aioli or something like that.
I've never had a traumatic experience with it but I just really do not like the flavour. I will not eat burgers or sandwiches with it or dips that taste of mayo. Blech. It's the one thing that really turns me off.
Best cappuccino in Oakvile or T.O.??
I think we've been to two different Mercuries. I've been there a few times and never have I had coffee with such a huge side of attitude as I get there. It really turned me off the place which is a shame because the coffee was quite good.
Liberte Greek Yogurt
Awesome yoghurt and seriously good tzatziki as well. Not low fat which makes it so much better.
Inexpensive french bistro in Toronto??
I recently went to Tati on Harbord St for Brunch. Food was good and the prices were reasonable but the service left a little bit to be desired.
has anyone tried the Knorr homestyle stock?
I like them in a pinch but they are super, super salty! I usually only use 1/2 for two cups of water. The leftovers store well in the fridge.
Single Cup Coffee- Pour Over? Downtown Toronto
I have a Hario and really like it! Makes really good coffee. You can get them at the Green Beanery in the Annex.

Best Italian coffee on Danforth
I've been really happy with both The Rooster and Crema. Have had excellent lattes from both. I like that they generally have a variety of espressos at Rooster and I can choose whatever floats my boat. Rooster also has awesome snacks...the sea-salt caramel brownie is deadly.
I've been to Broadview a few times and the coffee is good but not great. Once they made my bf a latte-esque cappuccino when he ordered a double. That was kind of disappointing.
Ontario Wild Blueberries
Spotted some today at Fruitland on the Danforth (just west of Logan). I think they were 5-6 for a not quite full pint. Makes me miss Nova Scotia and the 5lb box for $15.
Prime Beef
Huge second on Getaway Farms! Their beef is out of this world good, especially if you luck out and get your hands on their six week dry-aged product. Drool-worthy. I have no association with them but I'm there almost every week. The meat is not cheap but dear god it's good.
Also, don't wimp out and buy the tenderloin. Rib eyes are where it's at! Have one sitting in my fridge for dinner tomorrow.
New Seaport Farmer's Market in Halifax
Nice that it's going to be finished now that the high season is over for the year. I am very unimpressed with the traffic flow problems. What was the point of moving if they did not resolve one of the biggest issues!
Creme Fraiche-where to buy in Halifax/Dartmouth
You can find liberte brand creme fraiche at Pete's and I've also seen it at the Queen St. Sobeys in the health food dairy section. It is expensive but quite delicious.
New Seaport Farmer's Market in Halifax
Sadly "Zombie Cow Culture" is still in full swing at the new market particularly after 8:30am or so. It inspires a specific condition that I call "market rage". This is also caused by the crowds of cruise ship tourists that clump together in the most inconvenient places. Needless to say I try to shop early and get out as fast as possible so I don't have to stomp my feet. :p
I do like the seaport market but I feel like it still has some of the problems of the old market. The aisles are too narrow to walk through while people are browsing the tables at either side. Hopefully this will be resolved once the building is totally finished (I've seen minimal progress in the past month...it's a bit ridiculous). I miss some vendors from the old market but most of my favourites have changed locations. Oveall I think the change was for the better but I do hope they resolve the table spacing issue.
Sound off on Sausages in Halifax Area
The sausages from Pete's do the trick for a midweek sausage fix but I personally prefer to purchase mine at Sweet William's at the Farmer's Market. Everything I've had from there has been delicious but I particularly enjoy the fresh garlic ones. They also have really good deli meat (cajun ham!) and their smoked cheddar cheese is perfect on burgers. I swear I don't work for them despite this sounding like one big add!
Also, by the valley hstern means the Annapolis valley where lots of farms are located.
ISO Macarons in Halifax
The only macarons that I've seen here were from Gourmandise Avenue patisserie - it was a rather sad looking chocolate one without and lacked the proper "foot" that a good macaron will have. Honestly I haven't seen any here much to my chagrin! I love them and stuff myself silly when I see them in other places!
Sorry not to be much help!
