korean treats in flushing
oh, right! i see it now. since you just mentioned an outdoor food stand with no description, i guess i missed it! my bad! hope you can forgive the redundancy! :) :)
korean treats in flushing
yup, one of the pancakes had crushed peanuts. thanks for the info.
korean treats in flushing
it hasn't been operational the past half dozen or so times i've been there in the recent past. it isn't the small snack shop you mention in your post, which sells noodles, dumplings, rice cakes, etc.

there's a small stand right outside of the han yang mart on northern blvd (at 151st street) selling hot, freshly made korean pastries. i think it must have opened within the last 4 months or so. except for a sign saying "hot corn" and one saying "sweet yam," there isn't any english signage so we had to go with the point and smile system. we got a bag of fish-shaped cakes stuffed with sweet black beans, which i believe are bungeoppang, and some pancakes (made from a chewier batter) stuffed with cinnamon-sugar syrup (which got all caramel-y in the cooking process). both were great. it's hard to beat warm, sweet dough on a snowy day.
Five Leaves, Williamsburg
i enjoyed the burger (just the plain old version, not the special with beet and egg), but the fries were lousy. have heard variable things about the rest of the menu, so while i'll definitely be back, it will probably be for wine and cheese or a drink at the bar before the evening rush begins. it's a really pleasant place when it's not overrun.
sugar sweet sunshine closed temporarily or out of business?
the pumpkin trifle and the piggy pie are excellent as well. the former, especially, is not to be missed if it's available when you're there.

try marlow and daughters, the new butcher shop on broadway in williamsburg. they definitely have tails/ears/etc.
CLE: dante
thought i'd start a proper thread for this place, since it doesn't seem to have one of its own, instead of continuing to piggyback on to existing cleveland queries. we had dinner here last week, and as i mentioned on an earlier thread, i was a bit apprehensive due to the fact that dante will be closing on dec 31 at midnight and reopening in april in tremont. i'm glad to report that my worries were totally unfounded. our meal was excellent (as good or better than the one we enjoyed there last month), and the service was once again wonderful. we had the same waiter, who not only remembered us from our one previous visit but remembered some of the wines we'd tried. i had skate for my main, and it was pretty close to perfect. the fish itself couldn't have been cooked better, and it was served with grapefruit and grilled fennel, which added the kind of tart flavor i like. i'm really looking forward to trying the new incarnation on a future visit.
Comfort Food in Cleveland (diners, burgers, pierogies, etc)
the wait was for the table. for our meal, it was another half an hour or so. worth it, though - i really do think that the food is top-notch for what it is, and it's a pleasant place to hang out.
Comfort Food in Cleveland (diners, burgers, pierogies, etc)
in addition to the grilled cheese sandwiches, melt makes wonderful burgers. i finally tried one, and it's going to be hard to order anything else. the meat was so juicy and very smoky, and since the patty is served on their great, thick-cut sourdough, you don't have any bun disintegration issues. fries and sweet/sour vinegar slaw were awesome, as always. the only downside was the wait: 40 minutes at 1pm on a monday. ouch! i'm assuming the holidays had something to do with that, but the place is generally packed 24/7.
as for diners, i highly recommend big al's on larchmere. we've been going for years, and no other place comes close imho. it's a must-visit when i'm in town. for more upscale comfort food, we occasionally hit mom's diner on miles road. for jewish comfort food, it's all about jack's deli at cedar and green rds.
Great food in Cleveland
yeah, the fact that they already have the new location and such is definitely reassuring. and given the high quality of our experience there last month, when the closing was already in the works, i really shouldn't worry. but hey - i'm a neurotic food person. i can't help it!

i just read that dante is closing and moving to tremont, and lockkeepers will be reopening in the space. while it's a move that makes sense for the restaurant ("charmless" would be too kind a word to describe its current location in valley view), we have a special dinner planned there for boxing day, which is about a week before the closing date. am i paranoid to be worried about the quality suffering? i would think that dante and crew are way too professional for that, but on the other hand, i've been burned before by an expensive, memorably bad meal at a restaurant that was about to close.
Motorino Pizza on Graham
i really liked the pizza (we had the special artichoke pie), although a bit more crispiness would have been nice. that said, the dough had great flavor and was nicely salty without being overwhelming, while the smoked pancetta was delicious and generously portioned. i would have appreciated a bit more artichoke, though. i really liked our app, as well: thick triangles of oven-roasted mortadella. it was basically an italian take on fried bologna, and it was very, very tasty. sadly, our salad was not great. should have gone with the fig/gorgonzola one instead of the panzanella, which was really bland. we were trying to balance out the meat and cheese with something lighter, though! as for prices, it all seemed quite reasonable to me. i probably wouldn't go by myself, but 2 can eat nicely for under $20/person.

i agree that the sauce they squirt on at the end isn't very good. however, the chicken we've had has been perfectly cooked and smoky as hell, just incredibly flavorful. can't comment on the sides as we never get any. a large container of chicken to go is our standard order.
Williamsburg/Greenpoint: is there any decent Chinese takeout
i'd give musician a miss. it's been pretty bad the last 2 times we've ordered. at this point, when we want chinese we cook the simple stuff ourselves!

jerk-a-rama, mckenzie's, and jerk city are our favorites at the moment. having had all 3 recently, i can say that i like them much better than peppa's (which isn't bad by any means, mind you).
Momofuku Milk Bar-this ain't no Dairy Barn
i agree. i was surprised by the decor (or complete lack thereof), but i assume that the dumpiness is on purpose? it reminds me of the popular "indie" cafe in my college town, which was... rustic.
Bar Cento - Cleveland
glad you had such a great meal. we really enjoyed our experience there earlier this year, as well. i didn't think of it at the time, but you're right - the pizzas are very much like those we had at mozza. and speaking of bargains, i was impressed by the generous portions. one of our apps was a perfectly cooked skate dish that would have been an entree at another restaurant. you don't have to order much to leave stuffed (as we learned too late!).
Momofuku Milk Bar-this ain't no Dairy Barn
huh. when i asked for a sample of soft serve before i made my purchase, the girl behind the counter told me that their machine "didn't work that way" (her words). i thought that was quite odd.
Pizza recommendation at 39th near 2nd Ave.
i have to disagree about rosa's, at least regarding the quality of the grandma pies. we order grandma pies from there quite often (last order was 2 weeks ago), and they're excellent. perhaps the other kinds of pizza aren't good, but a grandma from rosa's is one of my favorite pies in the city.
Birthday Trip and Cake!
billy's is my favorite for birthday cakes:

if you scroll down the events page on the site, you'll see "italian happy hour - an offer you can't refuse." m-f, 4-7pm. apparently there are specials on italian wine, beer, and pizza.

oh, we loved it. we're planning to have a group dinner there next time i'm back, and i'm looking forward to trying the "italian happy hour" at the bar.

dante was superb. the standouts from the apps were the fried green tomatoes, served with a very astringent green olive tapenade and some incredibly fresh, floral watercress, and the bean soup, which had such a nice, deep, savory flavor. although we had debated doing some pasta tastings and charcuterie for our mains, in the end we chose from the traditional entree section: the mustard-crusted scallops and several orders of the braised pork belly. the former were cooked to a perfect medium and very, very sweet. the pork belly was a good example of the cut–rich and unctuous, but not overly greasy. the accompanying cranberry beans and soft little gnocchi were delicious, as well.
instead of going with wine by the bottle, we went with some bourbons/gin to start with and then had wine by the glass from the large selection of bottles available by the pour. that's a very nice feature, and even better is the service from the roving "wine guy." he was a delight to chat with, and he and his second-in-command were very helpful. our waiter, too, was a star. the food was top-notch, and it was matched 100% by the high level of service. as for the cost... it's pricey, but on par with moxie (which is our default for more special occasions) and lola, and portions were generous. with the pasta menu clocking in at under $20, as well as some other small plate options, it would be possible to have a wonderful meal there in the dining room for much less than what we spent. since it was our first time, we definitely splurged a bit.
Cleveland--good Italian restaurant wanted before show at the Grog Shop
seeing as my previous post recommending local shopping over legacy/beachwood was removed, i'll try again. i heartily second lyn's and stuart's comments.

gilly's has been out of business for a while, unfortunately. makes my heart hurt.

you'll have a great time at slyman's. just remember that they are only open until 2.30pm.
as far as hotels in the immediate area cleveland heights area, the only one i can think of is the alcazar on derbyshire rd. it's a good location, and it has a lot of character. there is also glidden house at university circle.

thanks for the tip. i generally don't read the cleveland.com forums because of how nasty people are, but i'll take a look.

curious if there are any recent reports on dante, or recommendations. i'll be going later this week for dinner (for the first time), and the menu looks great but quite large.
