Mexican / Latin grocer or good place to get authentic salsas and corn tortillas in Markham

Mad Mexican makes some pretty decent salsas. They can be found at a variety of locations in the GTA - for Markham, it looks like your closest bet is at Concord Food Centre (1438 Centre St.) in Thornhill, according to their website: http://www.madmexican.ca/recipes.html
Not sure why their locations page is listed under recipes, but as long as it works...?

Anyways, if you try it, please post back what you think-I've only tried their salsas from Scheffler's in SLM, but it'd be nice to know if it's consistent across the board.

New Year's Day Brunch in York Region?

Hello fellow CHers,

Perhaps someone could help in my search? I'm planning to take family out to brunch on NYD, but the only place that we've all agreed on, Bluestone Bistro, is sadly closed. The other alternative floating about is Cora's--please save us! (This isn't to knock Cora's--they do serve a purpose, but I'm more concerned about NYD nightmare-inducing lineups and the degradation in food quality that'll surely follow).

We're open to various cuisines, but are limited by area--specifically, York Region (preferably Markham), but can travel as far south as the 401 into North York or Scarborough/Pickering.

Many thanks!

2011 Food and Resto CLOSINGS

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere--it looks like Bluestone Bistro in Markham closed in October. Too bad, was hoping to try their brunch on New Year's.

ISO Ambroise apricot wheat beer in To.

I was at Drift Bar (Dufferin and Bloor) a few months ago and it was on tap. The food isn't bad either if you're looking for a small bite to eat as well.

Summerlicious 2011

! I'm surprised as well. If you do decide on going to Toula, go for the view and the drinks (maybe), but definitely not for the food. The service is fine if somewhat eccentric, but seriously, that was not good value for money.

Has anyone been to Blue Moon pub at Queen and Broadview?

Agreed. Lots of better places to eat in the area, just don't bother with the Blue Moon. It's standard greasy--as in, never change the oil greasy--pub food. Either eat at home or choose somewhere else close by!

Italian Restaurant in Rexdale/Kipling area

My nonna and nonno have lived in that area for years, but I'm scratching my head on this one. I can only think of Remos or even TreRose Bakery as bring family-owned...

looking for recs - Greek restaurant for Mom's birthday

On the topic of unpleasant experiences at Ouzeri- I would avoid based on the condition of their washrooms. Went a few weeks ago with friends- the food was generally pleasant, but any establishment with such filthy facilities just isn't worth it.

On the other hand, I've attended a couple of lovely birthdays at Pantheon. Warm service, decent food and clean facilities.

Looking for High Quality Mushrooms

Hi Sadistick,

It may be a bit out of your way, but I find the produce and fungi at Michaelangelo's (Woodbine & HWY 7) to be relatively good- I usually stop in for portobellos, so I'm not sure if there are any porcini to be had. if you happen to be in the neighbourhood or by the DVP, it's worth a look- http://www.michaelangelos.ca/

Found: Riedel Stemware at Markville HomeSense

Hello All,

My apologies if this is a double post- I couldn't find any information on this find on the board.

I did want to draw attention to a find made earlier today- the HomeSense at Markville Mall is carrying Riedel stemware at a discounted price. For example, I picked up a case of four (Merlot) for $34.49. There isn't much selection (and since this is Winners, they're sure to be seconds), however it could be worth some chowhound's time.

Best,
estrelas

ISO excellent custom/sculpted cake for birthday

Hello All,

I have a small, but important request: where can a delicious and aesthetically pleasing sculpted cake be had in the city? I'm flexible on price and size, but am really looking for something that delivers wow factor- this is for a dear friend's champagne birthday. I've searched the forums, and while there are some good leads on specialty cupcakes, a sculpted cake is what I'm after.

Locations around Yonge & Eg would be preferred, but I'm willing to travel!

Panettone brands available in Toronto... recommendations?

Good call- the "plain one" is actually pandoro, and is equally as tasty.

Panettone brands available in Toronto... recommendations?

Agreed- TreMarie is my nonna's staple when she isn't up to making cakes or pastries herself (sorry nonna!)

Cozy cafe/coffee shop in North York?

Ghoti, thank you for reminding me of this Second Cup! I pass by it about once or twice a month, and it completely slipped my mind.

Great- thanks for this, chutchut! I'll scout out Cafe Supreme beforehand, just to make sure there aren't any surprises ;)

Looking for TEA! Almond tea.

Seconded. All Things Tea is my go-to tea spot in the Annex... curiously, I'm beginning to suspect that they have the same supplier as The Old Curiosity Tea Shoppe up in Markham (albeit with a much larger selection).

Cozy cafe/coffee shop in North York?

Agreed. I've been to that Starbucks and not only is the layout awkward, but the chairs are definitely in a high traffic zone.

Out of curiousity, between Cafe Palma and Cafe Supreme, which would be quieter/less traffic (and still offer somewhat decent drinks)?

Cozy cafe/coffee shop in North York?

Hmm... I realize that this is an older thread revived, however, I too am interested in finding a relatively quiet/cozy cafe in the northern ends of the city. I'm a grad student looking for a comfortable and somewhat accessible spot to conduct interviews over coffee.

Plantations/Cafe Mirage is ok, atmosphere-wise (let's not discuss the food!), but perhaps other chowhounders can suggest a good spot that has decent coffee/drinks and would be good for interview sessions?
