Short trip to Providence, what can't be missed?

Wow guys thanks for all the suggestion and directions. Any lunch places down around Public Street? Can't wander too far, but might have a chance to escape for an hour during the day.

Thanks. All my evening activities revolve around food anyway ;). Thanks for the suggestion about Pastiche.
I'll be there very briefly with time for about two dinners out (in Tuesday night--out Friday morning).
Cab distance is fine; wish I had more time to venture around.

Short trip to Providence, what can't be missed?

I'm traveling to Providence (from LA) for a conference the first week of August and looking for some good food while there. I will be traveling with other co-workers, though I'm the foodie in the group and not adverse to eating alone if the cuisine is can't miss. I'm interested in the local "you must try this" places and "you can't get this anywhere else" dishes.
Love good martinis and wine bars.
Open to all styles of cookery, though I hear there is some great Italian to be had in Federal Hill. Also a great fan of seafood, but anything interesting will do.
Suggestions for evening activities would be appreciated too.
I will be staying downtown and limited to walking and/or public transit.
Thanks!

Conference in Philadelphia--Need good food!

Thanks for the suggestions! The Martini bar sounds fantastic and glad to hear they serve martinis the way they were meant to be served :)

Conference in Philadelphia--Need good food!

I will be alone so no fears about others tastes or a need for a business atmosphere. Love French food, Indian, and Sushi. Good Italian would be great is there seems to be a shortage of it in California. I'd like to stay in walking distance, but if there is a place that is just unmissable cabs are fine. People watching is always a plus. As to drinks, martinis and decent wine. Wine bars would be great and or places with interesting and friendly atmosphere.

Conference in Philadelphia--Need good food!

I'm going to Philadelphia for a few days in mid-November for a conference. I'll be in the downtown area, near the Convention Center. I'm looking for good food, not horrible over-priced, but will to try almost anything. Biggest issue is transportation so staying in the area would be helpful. I'm really interested in dinner or post-conference I" need a good drink because I'm spent too much time talking about my job with total strangers" places.
