tim tams at Publix

I can't seem to find it at Publix or Target this year although they used to carry it in the past. Any idea where else to obtain some? My stash is running low!

Visitor looking for Good Chinese Buffet

Passed by a couple of weeks ago and it's gone. There is a sign saying that Philip Ho's Chinese Dim Sum is coming soon. I believe the guy is from Setai. Hopefully it will be a good dimsum place!

Any Bubble Tea Updates?

sadly it's closed now.

Bubble Tea?

I think M&H is not bad:

Some Vietnamese restaurants offer boba too but they often don't sell enough of them so the batch is old. At least when I get them at M&H the bubbles are still chewy on the inside and not mushy.

Banh Mi Palm Beach County

Glad the farmer's market is finally open! Will check your place out when I get there!

Sakaya Kitchen - Midtown Miami

THe chicken wings are really good, with lots of ginger and garlic.
THe bugolgi lettuce wrap is quite tasty. It uses jasmine rather than short grained rice as a real Korean restaurant would, but the rice is nicely cooked. Have to complain about the lettuce though - limp, small and torn pieces, totally useless for wrapping.
Heard great things abut the pork bun but were disappointed. The meat was not tender at all and the flavor came from the sauce and not the meat itself.
Still, overall happy enough to want to go back for a second try.

Lychee sightings - 2010

First sight them on Sunset east of Red Road, but it was sour with big seeds.
THen bought some off another road vendor on SUnset and 97th. Both lychee and longnan for $3 each.

Authentic Filipino Cuisine

My Filipina friend told me she likes the one in downtown Miami. She never did give me the address. Anyone has some idea where it is?

I usually (though not frequently) go to Pampanguena way down south. It's more a grocery store with a cafetaria and a few tables in the back.

Quality Bread-Greater Miami

I do hope someone can point out some great places as that's what I always miss living in Miami: great bread. It's not uncommon that when we travel we'll bring home a big bag of loaves. I'd love a great local bakery but have been disappointed. Panera is a chain but I'd say its bread is better than at least 98% of the bakeries out here. Sometimes there are good finds at farmer's market too.

Here's one that get frequent mention:
Delices-France

14453 S Dixie Hwy
Miami, FL 33176

I;ve tried it, it's good, but I won't say out of this world. You may find it of special interest because the owner picked up his baking bug when he visited Montreal. He then went to France to learn the craft.

Fort Lauderdale Recs: Near Airport or Sawgrass

I have a friend coming in town for visit. As I don't often venture up that area, I don't really have a good idea what to get. I thinking of something Floridian/Carribean or South America, like Peruvian, or Argentine. Nothing too meat heavy.

Thanks!

Looking for green coffee beans in Tampa, FL

Check Whole Foods to see if they roast their own beans for their coffee bar. In their bigger stores they do, and you can buy the green beans just like the roasted ones by the pound.

Need Cheap Authentic Cuban Food in Miami

Second this suggestion. It's kind of like a market, and the experience is more than just a restaurant meal. And not that far of a drive from Miami Beach.

Dinner Buffet for large group in Orlando

Okay, I feel a bit ashamed to post this... But my group is visiting Orlando, 25+ of us. Past experience told me that even if I bring them to a good restuarant I like, often our group will overwhelmed the staff, and the quality of service and food suffered. So I figure a safe bet would be a buffet... where everybody can find something they like.

Other than the obvious choices of chain, like Golden Corral, is there any suggestion? My group likes Crazy Buffet in Tampa but when I just googled about the one in Orlando, looks like the review is really awful. I myself had never tried any Asian buffet in Orlando that is decent in quality, but maybe someone can point me to the better ones?

NAOE - Excellent Omakase in Sunny Isles

On my visit a few months ago, the uni, kohada and shiraebi were all $8 a piece, a 750ml bottle of sake can be over $100. So it is certainly possible to run up $400.

Xiao Long Bao or "Little Dumplings from Basket"

There are some places serving XLB but I'd say you will likely be disappointed, especially as you sounds like you know what a good XLB should be like.

Shanghai Garden at 220 N Congress Ave in Boyton Beach. Their Chinese menu is on a separate piece of paper. Not a lot of items and some they are out of. (or I suspect they just don't make it due to lack of demand) They do have XLB, Shanghai stir fried noodles and the like.

Asia#1 at 9409 Sheridan St in Cooper City advertises itself as authentic Northern noodle soup, with Dan dan noodle, Da Lo Mien, chicken cold noodle, flower bun, dumplings, etc, but oddly no mention og XLB. I've never been there myself though I have been wanting to for a while, just hardly made it there.

Hong Kong Dim Sum at 2363 N University Dr at Coral Springs is a Chinese take out place that sells frozen dim sum , and has a nice variety including XLB, shrimp dumpling, BBQ pork buns, wontons, rice paste, sticky rice chicken in lotus leaf etc. They can steam it for you to eat there, but it's a Chinese take out place with a couple of old and not very clean tables. I haven't tried their XLB but I think in general the quality of the ingredients is lacking.

Long Gung in Miami near FIU, on SW 8 St just west of Turnpike, also has some "Northern snacks". I kind of remember they have XLB but not 100% sure as it has been a while.

Best Key Lime pie

Are Kenny's pies in the bakery or the frozen section of Whole Foods?

Official Miami Spice 2009 Thread

Has anyone been to Au Pied de Cochon? I've been wanting to go but as they don't post the spice menu I am kind of wary.

Farmer's market in Coral Gables

Coral Gables has its own Farmer's Market in the winter but that would be a few months away, and it's rather small. Your closest one will be the one in Coconut Grove every Saturday.

Indian or Pakistani market in Miami

I think both places are closed. (Asia Grocery on Miller and the one in the Gables: didn't survive the building boom a few years back)

Pizza Crawl - who's your winner?

I've taken friends to try Racks and PV, and they both vote for Racks. The two guys just feel that PV is too stingy on the toppings. We've also ordered salad and pasta at Racks and they were excellent too, so it's rreally a place I can see myself returning to. My personal favorite is PV, though the limited menu and seating will mean less frequent visit for sure.

Has anyone tried Setai's Miami Spice meal yet?

when my friends went last year, they ordered the Spice menu and were charged for the bread, and a ridiculously high price for the water. They ended up paying almost $100 per person. So I never get to dine there.

Glad to know that they are not doing it this year.

Ethiopian near Miami downtown?

I know Sheba has closed already, but someone told me that lately when he drove by downtown area, near NE 2 Ave (?) he spotted a new Ethiopian place.
Does anybody know where this may be? It would be nice if indeed a new one has opened.

Lychee sightings - Miami

They have some good sized Asian markets there. I am sure they'll have it.

Miami Pizza Showdown Part I - Recap

My one sentence comment:

Joey: Pretty good, interesting flavor
Pizzavolante: Wow I will be back
Andiamo: Did I really like this place?

Finger Lakes Region?

Thanks all for the reply! Right now I haven't narrowed down the detail of the trip, but usually when I plan, the meals will be an important part of the trip. No just stopping by and grabbing a bite at any fast food joint for me. I look forward to tasting some local cheese and wine. Looks like there are lots of vineyards and a few cheese farms too.

Thanks again all the tips give me a good starting point to research.

Finger Lakes Region?

Hi I will be visiting NY in July, and will b spending some time in the Finger Lakes Region, I don't seem to find a board that includes this area, but this one seems like the closest thing to it. I hope you don't mind my posting here, but as a first tiem visitor I can really use some suggestions on where to eat. Also, which wineries would you recommend visiting? Are there any dairy/cheese makers worth visiting?
I've also read about the Ithaca Farmer's Market. Is it a good place to visit? Which booths do you recommend?
I appreciate in advance any advice. Thank you!

Indian food in Miami?

If it were paratha it would be the worst paratha I've ever had. It looked and tasted like a warmed tortilla.

Hakkasan Miami Beach

Just looking at the price, it's not terrible. The Duck is outrageous just because of the osetra, which at retail is over $100 for an ounce.

I mean, the prices are expensive compare to your average American Chinese joints, but that's not the basis. If you go to an upscale Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong or Shanghai, one situated in a hotel, the price would be very comparable, and the dishes are similar to what you may see on those menus too. It's very authentic, and many are not dishes you will find in Miami, though you may see them in bigger U.S. cities.

Reading the menu, doesn't look like they will bring a big bowl of rice for free? Yikes!

NAOE - Excellent Omakase in Sunny Isles

Thanks for the wonderful food porn! Your review is orgasm-inducing... and transported me to Japan. Glad to know of this place, especially when Yakko san has gone downhill a bit.

I'd definitely love to see more specialized Japanese restaurants, like a kaiden sushi place, a okonomiyaki place, yakitori shop or a ramen noodle shop. Like the ones in California, instead of just generic Japanese with the same sushi, teriyaki, tempura and green tea ice cream.

Cafes & Bakeries in Miami

Well, since this thread got retrived...
Totally agree with you. If not French, then how about a Portuguese bakery? Greek? German?

I went to Montreal, had great French baguette (needless to say) and deliciolus Portuguese bread. and the nata... Oh the heavenly nata... I went to Tarpon Springs, and came back with loads of Greek pastry and bread to fill my freezer. And we have here are Cuban bread and pastelitos. There was a German bakery in Kendall but I think it's closed down a few years back.

Where do I get my bread? Paul is too far away, so I am getting my daily bread at Panera and Costco. Honestly, they are good, chewy inside, crusty outside. If I could find a good artisan bakery, I definitely would go support it, but I just haven't find anything great.
